    I had to umpire 3-4 grade fast pitch softball when I was 19 to help a friend out. I had to grab both coaches and tell them to get their parents under control for 1, and that the strike zone would pretty much be any ball that actually got to the plate, because the pitchers weren’t getting the ball to the plate and walking most of the lineups. Both sides agreed with that, to my utter shock. I also never umped another game after that day.

    Thank you for sharing Rich & Suzy. Pure gold, as this is most parents of Little Leaguer's experience. Some parents shame us for complaining these umps are human & volunteers. But we're just BEGGING for some consistency like Suzy says. It's a real tough lesson to learn for kids at this age & some take it personally. What's not mentioned if this is a super competitive league some coaches won't try that pitcher again because "they can't throw strikes".

    I used to be a little league umpire and having a tight strike zone is ridiculous.

    • @paulsmith9198
      @paulsmith9198 2 роки тому +2

      Yup, when you widen the strike zone a little, it encourages the kids to get the bat of their shoulder and try to put the ball in play. Getting a walk train going in a little league game doesn't really help anyone's skill sets.

    • @Michael-dy7zp
      @Michael-dy7zp 2 роки тому

      @@paulsmith9198 Also the games never go the full 6 innings because, at least the 2 different little leagues I umped had a 2 hour window for each game. So a game would start at 4 pm and the game following would start at 6 pm, and sometimes games would be a hour and half into it but only be in the 3rd inning, so I would widen the strike zone. And your right it makes the hitters swing the bat, I know you can't have a humongous strike zone but if a pitch is close to the corner, more likely than not I'm calling a strike. Unless both teams pitchers are really good then you use a normal strike zone.

    I've umpired my fair share of Youth games. One thing I know is CALL STRIKES. You're better off calling it a strike if it's a little bit outside. You're going to take more grief for not calling it. Plus it gets the batter swinging the bat more often which puts the ball in play more often. The game is more fun that way. Nobody likes a walk fest. Open up your zone a little bit for these younger kids. Tighten it up in high school games. Don't use your Junior College strike zone in a 12u Little League playoff game.

    It’s not about how much money the ump is being paid. If they are bad and inconsistent at $50 a game they will be bad and inconsistent at $500 a game. It’s a habitual ingrained and learned action. They call what they see and unfortunately we don’t see what they thought they saw.

    I've had some time to think about this.
    You, as parents or even just adults, even entertaining the idea that "the ump squeezed the strike zone" is the likely reason that your son will never love the game and likely quit soon.
    You really, REALLY, need to be better than that. Embarrassing stuff

    • @KonaTheDragon
      @KonaTheDragon 2 роки тому

      A strike zone can be, and at that level, is usually different with each ump.
      It’s the coaches job to inform your batters too, hey he’s calling a very wide strike zone today…
      So to say “to even entertain the idea” is so absurdly ignorant. It’s a major element of the game.
      Now how you respond to it is a different matter, but to just THINK about it and maybe discuss it is “embarrassing stuff” is absolute bullshit that doesn’t make sense at all unless you’re the thought police and wanna pretend every ump is perfect and every strike zone is the exact same.
