- Whether you hike up or go in the cable car, Hoher Kasten is definitely worth a visit. On the west side of the Alpstein in Switzerland, it has great views towards Santis, Fälensee, Saxer Lücke, Sämtisersee, Appenzell, Leichtenstein and Austria. It's also a great starting point for hiking further into the Alpstein.

That view from Hoher Kasten is my computer's background photo. Stunning. You might want to go back and hike the ridge to Staubern, Saxer Lucke and down to Bollenwees when everything is open. I understand the desire for being alone but the views from the ridge can't be beat. Also the Liesengrat is quite the hike. It is far easier than the hike you did up to the Schilthorn
It's a great view isn't it! I was blown away by the whole Alpstein. I know Saxer Lucke is proper Instragram territory but the whole area is so beautiful and accessible. Amazing that within such a short time you can be amongst such great scenery. I definitely want to go back sometime and walk the ridge and (another day) do Liesengrat. I didn't include it in my Falensee video but I did go across to see if it would be possible to hike up to Saxer Lucke but the snow was too deep. Plus common hiking sense prevailed! Another time.
