How I upgraded my Lincoln MKZ TCU from 3G to 4G Complete Video

- After purchasing my 2017 MKZ I was bummed to find out that the Lincoln Connect (similar to Ford Connect) had been disabled due to the 3G networks no longer being in service. The only way to resolve this was to upgrade the onboard modem to a 4G and program it. This video show the process of upgrading the modem on my MKZ but it should be similar for Fusion owners as well. I was only able to pull this off with the help of some users on the Cyanlabs forums which I will link below.
The overall process entails: First remove you car from the Lincoln or Ford app
1. Replace 3G modem with 4G part number HJ5T-14G087-UF
2. Install 4G antenna for the modem
3. Upgrade the firmware on the modem in my case to HJ5T-14G087-UN
4. Master reset APIM
5. Set first line of TCU modem to B100 to clear out previous vehicle VIN
6. Wait about 5-10mins before trying to activate in the app
7. Enjoy!

Thanks very much for the video. I installed the 4g TCU into a 2017 MKC. I originally tried a “L” series TCU and it just wouldn’t communicate. I didn’t have to update the firmware like in the video. I never figured out in Forscan the tables showing cell signals either. I did have to change the number in the configuration tab from 2 to 3. Then back to 2. I believe those numbers are car specific for configuration purposes. Great video for reference…..I got to see Forscan in use before I tried it.
Did you have to pay for Forscan?
No, I did not pay for it. I simply downloaded it to a laptop. Got a key for it to work for like 90 days for free. After 90 days, it would cost. However, one could just use a different email after the trial was up virtually giving free Forscan.
I wonder if this should work on my 2016 MKC
Will any North American Ford 4G TCU work on a 2017 MkX? Also can you link where you got the antenna? Thank you so much for your video.
How did it go
I read the pdf document you mentioned. Did you have to buy additional equipement or pay for a license to do the IDS scan? Thanks! great video
You need FORScan license but you can get a free license for 2 months
@@ChadMees so Forscan can handle the IDS part? thanks for the quick response
I didn’t do anything in IDS. Everything was done in FORScan
Can you please share where to get this part?
I got mine on eBay. Search the part number and you should find a couple
@Chad Mees would you be able to tell me the part number for the mkc?
I don’t know what it has to be. I would think that you could use the same one I used here. Mine was actually pulled from a Ford Escape
can you give the link for the forum thread this particular discussion is on please. A search didn't help. Thx great video btw

My 2019 has a bad TCU. Would this process work if I bought a used working one and swapped them?
I believe that you can swap the TCU without a ton of programming but I could be wrong. This process is for cars that had the 2g or 3g modem to start with. You may be able to get a TCU with the same part number and drop
It in then factory reset your sync system it it may work
Sounds like it's worth a try! Thanks for the advice!
Make sure you remove your car from your Lincoln app as well if you try this. It will likely give you an error if you don’t
What OBD scanner is recommended to connect to the laptop? I’ve already swapped in a 4g modem into a 2017 Lincoln MKC. Thanks
Did you use the exact same part number?
ObdlinkEX is the recommended adapter for firmware updates
I was asking about the TCU part number. Does it have to start with a H?
I ended up having to put a “J” series TCU in the car. I have oil life working, fuel level working, mileage working, and tire pressure working. The unlock/unlock and start features are not working. They’re on the phone, but when I try it….those features just don’t work. I don’t understand why just those don’t work. Any ideas?
Hi, how long did it take to upload the files?
If memory serves me correctly it was about 30 minutes
@@ChadMees thanks, I will upload it to Ford Fusion Energi:)
@@bartekkoscianski7391do you know where the modem located in ford fusion energi models? Same as in trunk?
If anybody has done this on an Energi I’d love to know if it works properly & what it took to do it
Can somebody confirm if the position of the modem is the same in a MKC too like MKZ?
I saw this video more than 10 times to do the same for my car
Is it same for 2015 mkz?
Will a HJ5T-14G087-UE work? Are there other part numbers I can look for? My original part was GP5T-14G087-DF
My forcscan keeps saying" Downloading (TCU firmware update), not available under trial extended license" any suggestions?
I need to do this on my 2020 Ford fusion energi, but kinda chicken about it
Do you know if it is possible to update my TCU unit on my Focus MK4 st line?
Wanna' do mine? :) I'll pay.
Happy to help with what I can!
I’m interested too,
Has anyone tried it on 2017 Continental Reserve? 2020 Continental TCU has different part number than the Fusion (JD9T-14G229-AL) and it also has 2 antenna connectors(pink/purple and yellow/mustard). I’m assuming purple is the 4G and yellow is the SiriusXM. Current 2017 TCU doesn’t have any antenna connectors.
The TCU with dual antennas is usually for models that support the hotspot. Single antenna TCU will only support vehicle functions.
Did u end up losing SiriusXm logos at all with the 3.4 update?
I don’t use SiriusXM but I believe some of the 3.4 releases outline that the logos are functional.
What would you say the procedure is to turn off that programming application and unplug the computer from the car. Would it be a similar process to that of removing a flash drive from a PC? Also, I have a ‘13 Fusion. You think any of this stuff would work at all or am I just out of luck with my particular year.
You just press the disconnect button in the bottom of FORScan. I used to have a 13 fusion and I did a lot of different programming on it. The 13 can be a little different with some of the programming but pretty much everything is doable. The hard part on yours will be if you have the wiring already for the modem. If not you would have to add it.
What all can you unlock in this car with forscan I have base of the base model
That really depends on what your car is equipped with. I disabled the double honk when I get out of the car while it’s running and also enabled secure idle so it cannot be put into gear without the key inside
On the 2nd day was your car running?
Could you suggest where I coould get the part? I have a 2016 MKZ Black label and 2017 MKC..
I ordered mine on eBay
Great job! Thank you! Am I correct in understanding that if my 16 mkx has the lincoln way and sync three, I should be able to switch to the 4g?
I just purchased a 2016 Lincoln MKX reserve with updated sync 3.4
Did you ever swap out the modem and get remote start to work?
Do we know if this will work on a 2017 Contintial Black label
I believe it will
Well I did it, and it works. Not seeing the charging options tho
Assuming you have an Energi model you may have to play with some other settings. I’m not familiar with it but I believe there is some info on cyanlabs
If you do figure out how to get it to work with the Energi please let me know. I have a 2017 & just left a Ford dealer today & asked about fixing/upgrading the modem. They told me for a while they did but then stopped supporting it.
Do you think the 14 model of the mkz would have the same part or work?
If it originally had the Lincoln way modem then I would believe this will work. Otherwise the wiring may not be preexisting. You should be able to check in your trunk and see if the modem and wiring are present
@@ChadMees Alright and I’m pretty sure it does, Everything I have checked says so at least lol
Will any ford 4g modem work?
I honestly do not know. I went with this one because it was recommended on cyanlabs
Not all the 4g modems are the same. Case in point, I first installed a “L” series in a 2017 MKC. It could have possibly worked if I downgraded the firmware, but that would have made the job more complex. Much more easier to just resell the “L” back on EBay. Anyways, my car needed the “J” series to work.
I have a 2017 MKZ Select that never had a modem in the first place (it was an option for that trim, standard on higher trim levels).
What do you think the odds are that they made them all have the capability to have one, and left it up to the buyer to choose whether to get one, then just hook one up if they did? I'm thinking it could be doable if all those connections are there, just no modem.
I’m not sure the exact wiring for it but I know it can be added to vehicles that didn’t originally support them. It would likely require some splices in a couple of connectors or wires.
