    As a hearing person it's easy to forget that being Deaf isn't just 100% loss of hearing. I'd like to believe the general ignorance of hearing people will slowly diminish c:

      Catherine Mobley yeah it gets so hard to remember being deaf is a range, not just total hearing loss. it's been easier to remember since my papa's gotten hearing loss. he can hear if you're loud and not high-pitched, he still can watch TV and listen to music but he needs it much louder and slower. he also has hearing aids but he rarely wears them, they scream all the time and they hurt. he's not deaf i don't think, but he's definitely hard of hearing.

      @@zachstuder8081 You have a different definition of deafness than most people, and the medical definition of "partial or complete hearing loss". Jessica has substantial hearing loss, so she is deaf.
      Why should you be the arbiter of deafness anyway? And why should your personal definition be the only valid one?

    As an Audiologist can I say how much I love this video. I wish all my patients could see this. You have a fantastic approach to wearing aids.
    Using the eye end of a needle is one of the things I suggest for cleaning out the end of the tube and totally don't feel pressured into doing your own retubing if you aren't doing it every day it can be fiddly.

    • @wolbashi
      @wolbashi 6 років тому +11

      some hearing aid producers include small cleaning sets together which each hearing aid device. Usually these consist of flexible long plastic needle, magnet to help you take out batteries and a small brush to brush out wax residue from your ear molds ;)
      Before I got hand on these I was using one layer of paper tissues rolled into a scone and it helped me a lot to put all wax out. Though it is important to do this at least once a week ;) my ears are on a itchy side so usually after three days I can feel that it is high time to do some basic cleaning with the paper tissue.
      About re-tubing. Here in Poland it is difficult to find tubes on the market so anyway you have to go to your audiologist and ask them for new tubes. Majority of them will just do this for you, some of them will sell some tubes so that you're stocked for the next year :D

    • @brendaleelydon
      @brendaleelydon 4 роки тому +2

      @@FennecTheRabbit No, you are correct! They are also called 'ball-point needles' :) An embroidery or tapestry needle (which I do believe she mentioned in the video) is a hand sewing needle that also tends towards a rounded/blunt 'point' & are usually longer than a machine needle (so perhaps easier to hold for some people).

      I have a moderate/severe loss in both ears and I'm an early childhood special educator. I have a masters degree. I have been teaching children up to age three (and helping their parents help them) for 35 years. Hearing loss, even when significant, can be overcome and does not need to get in the way of your child being able to do anything they want. Bless you for seeking to understand your child's point of view better. That and instilling the belief that your child can do anything they want are the best ways to support them.

    I'm getting my first hearing aids after my operation this winter, and I'm so exited! My hearing has been going down drastically over the last half a year. It's hard for me to concentrate in school, and I can't watch tv shows or movies with other people anymore (because I have to turn it up so loud for me to be able to understand anything.) Casual conversation is also hard, and I sometimes rely on lipreading, even though I am terrible at it and get things wrong all the time.

    This video was great! It answers so many questions people have. It would be wonderful if you and Claudia did a video from a her point of view. Traveling with a deaf person for example. When we got married my husband could hear in the average range. Now he hears in the profoundly deaf range; this has changed the way we travel. It would be good to hear from Claudia's perspective. Maybe give tips on how other spouses can help. I know quite a few people who's spouse went deaf over a period of years, then they got hearing aids and that brought on other problems as well.

My son had grommets inserted in both ears when he was four ... after I realised other people couldn't understand him and the that he couldnt hear well. I had developed a sort of mum-son sign language without even realising I was doing it. He hears so well since his operation but I realise it may reoccur. My son and my nanna who sometimes wears a hearing aid have been my only exposure to hearing loss. You are honestly educating me in matters I knew nothing about! He says, "Instead of hiding the hearing aids, why not show them off??" It seems to me that that should be the standard--I have astigmatism and show off my glasses, so why shouldn't people who are hoh show off their hearing aids?

Mask, glasses, hearing aids ... now I look like Dumbo I guess! 🐘 Anyways, I really want to thank you dear Jessica. You make me feel so much better in my half-deafness. In my opinion it's really important not to hide these tools also because they help you to immediately guess people's attitude towards disability: super sensitive, not sensitive, quite inclusive, not enough patient and so on. It's so important to me to get more information from Deaf adults. My four year-old is Deaf and wears hearing aids, and she doesn't "sound" Deaf according to literally every stranger and acquaintance and relative... and they wonder if it's even worth us sending her to the local specialized school so that she also learns a sign language. We maintain that she should have the option of signing if she wants to, and learning early will help. She loves her purple aids with bright pink ear molds, she chooses the colours when we change the molds, and she loves signing, and we're taking classes to keep up. Most of her classmates have hearing aids and implants, and we attend a lot of community events.
    I'm always on the lookout for young adults who wear hearing aids and are also just cool and good at what they do, the same way I keep a mental list of dyslexic celebrities and leaders to point to when my older daughter gets down on herself for it. It's great, too, to hear first-person accounts from adults who share their life experiences so that I can understand a bit more of what they're going to go through, you know? Thank you so much for sharing.
    (I've found a very very small size of crochet hook- 0.5mm or so- works wonders for cleaning the molds, instead of a needle. Small, metal, but also not sharp and with an excellent hook that can scoop around. I work in very small gauge crochet, and it's been our go-to tool for years now!)

    I was born with a severe hearing loss condition, as my dad was. I passed school within the firsts to pass. I can't say that the hearing did not help at all, but lip-reading was the tool. However, when I got into a job wasn't that easy anymore so I needed to get hearing aids. I've got the same ones as you and they do a great job and I also subscribe to almost everything you said, it's more quiet and definitely relaxing to take them off but mine are not painfully, I guess that is because I have small tubes and a small earbuds as well. woww I have understood a lot about deaf people because of your International Deaf Week Videos. It gives me a new perspective and a new understanding. I hope that you continue to inspire other people not just deaf people but us to because you have proven that living with. disability has its pros and cons 😂 you are so brave to share your story to the world

    Your hearing aids are the same type as mine. And you are the first person I know that understands the hair problem and the laying down problem and you know how I feel about other people seeing them. This is a first for me. Thanks for being that person.

    your videos have taught me so much. especially the video where you explained how higher pitched sounds are harder for you to hear than lower pitched ones- i have a dear family friend who is losing his hearing and he has mentioned that same thing, that my higher pitched female voice is harder for him to hear. also, i think your 40s aesthetic is gorgeous and you are gorgeous too! paired with your accent you are a very charming lady. thank you for sharing these videos, i have really learned a lot. pet those sweet doggies for me!

    Hahaha you really took me back remembering the scream of hearing aids. A very found memory of working at a deaf nursery school.
    Working there has truly taught me now to listen and not just hear. It's something that I will always take to heart and I'm very greatful for that

    I just found this wholly on accident while researching deafness (I used to work closely with Gallaudet University and have always been curious as to the experiences of the deaf but am just now getting around to educating myself for some reason) and I have to say you are one of the most charming and lovely personalities, and even though I myself am not deaf or impaired in any major way I am so very much enjoying your videos. Thank you for making them and for just generally being you!

    You project your sarcasm amazingly well. You should give training to people trying to sound sarcastic and failing (hearing ones, of course^^).
    Jokes aside, that is one really helpful video for "normal hearing" people to understand better what Hearing aids do and dont. Well done!

    I have a very similar hearing loss history to you. For many years I only wore one hearing aid at a time because I got overwhelmed by the sound when I wore two. As the years passed, I continued to loose decibels and in my 50s my hearing was such that I really needed both hearing aids in to function at work and in the community. I did adjust and now I have no problem wearing both aids all day. I do pop them out if the office gets too noisy and I need a break. I used to take them out when I got home (getting comfortable) but I don't even do that any more.

    Thank you so much for making these videos! My son is deaf but the rest of my family is hearing, so I'm trying to learn what I can to support him. He's just turned three, so things like learning about air bubbles causing headaches is fabulously useful to know.

    Thank you for posting this. I wear hearing aids and have been since I was 10. Even though I was born particularly deaf. So nice to see someone young who talks normally talking about being deaf!!! Also the audiologist should give you a cleaning kit to clean the wax out. Love your videos!!! So inspiring!!! Xxx

    I also find that sometimes it gets really itchy in my ear under my hearing aid so I'll put Vaseline on it before putting it on! And I also agree with you how the hard ones are less comfortable than the flexible ones! By the way, I also don't sound deaf and I get asked all the same questions as you!!! It's nice to stumble upon another deaf person on social media! Thank you for your videos!

    My ironic story is that I have chronic noise-triggered migraines and this kid at my school is bordering on deaf. We're in a group together and people always think I'm wearing hearing aids as well, when I'm really wearing little tech buds that cancel out noise and are great for any unexpected noises. When I don't feel well I just wear Bose Noise Cancelling headphones because they're way more comfortable

    The plastic bit off clothing tags are brilliant for cleaning out tubes! They’re thin and bendy enough without being so sharp that you risk puncturing the tube. You’re welcome 😜 xxx
