You've hit the nail on the head about how much of a tourist town Queenstown is! I haven't been there in over 20 years but UA-cam keeps me mostly current. I was in hospitality and had many friends working in hotels in and around QT. I think you have the right idea by treating it as a destination holiday. It's as expensive as as you would expect but you can't argue with the scenery! When I was last there Fergburger didn't even have a restaurant yet and sold burgers from a hole in the wall near the shore of Lake Wakatipu. I strongly suggest Paragliding, cruising on the TSS Earnslaw, traveling to Wanaka and to Milford Sound as well as having a look around Arrowtown. Have fun!

You won't believe it, but that is a quiet period for Queenstown! The city has 29,000 people in total, but during the winter festival the area can swell to 100,000 people!

the Remarkables make Queenstown airport my favourite airport in the world to fly into (not that ive been to them all). Fun fact: night time flights were only allowed in/out since 2016... watch out for them mountains! but with such great views get a window seat and go during the day!

You need to drive to Clyde , Bannockburn or Cromwell instead . It is not far. People of Otago tend not to got to Queenstown because of the tourists, traffic etc. The rest of Central Otago is much more beautiful and less touristy

I recall when Queenstown was a quaint Alpine / lake town. It was quiet and relaxing to walk and drive around. Accomodation at a reasonable price, and just skiers, instructors and outdoors enthusiasts like yourselves. But that was then, before all the well healed city dwellers arrived from around NZ and the world. Check out all the private jets at the airport. But all those exhausted city types who said they wanted peace, arrived bringing their city chaos and mayhem with them. I last passed by Queenstown in 2021. It was packed with traffic jams and utter pandemonium, so we actually did not get fully into the town, but instead found a bypass. Frankton was beautiful once, but it was a sprawling shopping centre. Heading South towards the "Devil's Staircase" there were suburbs and rampant construction. In my view the beauty people once valued, has been destroyed by those who say they value it. It is all about $$$$. I will never return to Queenstown. Did you see the Earnslaw?

Our experience in a motorhome is to stay in the local campground and walk to the township. The parking in Queenstown is dreadful. Another option we found was to park out of Queenstown and catch the bus - it's very cheap and way less stressful than finding an expensive car park :) Winter is the time to go though, the snow on the Remarkables then is stunning.

We are in Queenstown at the moment and are loving it. We managed to have a lovely steak, fries and salad for $25 each, which I think is really good value. You have to look around, there was also a place that has specials each day at $15, today it was burger and chips, but we had the Fergburger the day before, so didn’t go there. We had one Fergburger between us and it was delicious and so filling

As a kiwi Queenstown and wanaka are great and worth a visit but designed for the tourist and aucklanders. It is also extremely busy and expensive. Personally in my opinion there are smaller towns such as timaru and Nelson which are just as beautiful but nowhere near as busy or expensive (although Nelson is starting to get really busy and expensive now). I guess it all depends on what you want

Locals know the nice places here because I see them in the hundreds every day walking, watching and enjoying all the pretty places.

A beautiful town with a dark underbelly. It's made for tourism and tourists but if you're a young NZer dropping in for a look , coming in to party with other NZers who live there, and you have no real interest in feeding the money trade there, the message there is loud and clear..."NOT WELCOME!"
Back in the mid 80's. A group us us drove up there from Dunedin to chill and hook up with some of the locals. We were just driving back to the house of some people we'd met up with in the town when the local cops began to tail us. We 'd been pegged as undesirables by them because of the way we looked and because of our ethinicity. Long story short, the cops had us all up against a wall and began to search us for drugs as the abused us verbally, things escalated and they hauled one of my friends off to jail on some bolgus charge. The next day when we went downt to the lock up to see what was going on with him they literally ambushed us as we walked through the town. One cop drove his squad car into my friend and hit him from behind and several others leaped out from their hiding places in shop fronts and attacked us. They grabbed my friend Clinton, and began smashing his face into the ground, then arrested HIM for assaulting THEM...The cops lied in court and he went to prison for 11 months on totally false charges. They threatened the rest of us that we were next if we didn't get out of town and of course none of us were given any opportunity to tesify in court...I never knew why they hated us so much. We weren't doing anything bad. We were jus there having a good time without the need to spend a lot of money. Being from NZ it's easy to get to know locals and just hook up with them. The local tourist mafia don't like that. They hate Kiwis coming in and enjoying their tourist trap without forking out like the tourists. I've always hated Queenstown since that day. I never recommend it to anyone. A place with that much greed, malice and prejudice doesn't deserve to thrive...It's all so fake. Sorry for the negative story, but to many of us locals, Queenstown is synonymous with greed, and racism. There is no real hospitality there.. Several months prior to this incident I had actually been there as an art student sponsored by a big oil company to participate in a photography event called "Focus on NZ" And because I was part of an entourage of famous international photogrphers from Magnum et al, and all my expenses had been paid for by BP Oil I was of course treated like royalty that time. Going back as myself this time though, I was treated the way they really saw me...Like garbage! Don't be fooled by the smiles there. Some of the worst racists I've ever encountered in my life and of all the many countries I've been to, operate out of Queenstown!

LOL, You guys think its busy now..Lucky you NOT there in winter as it's a mad house. Thing about Queenstown is that it's very expensive being a tourist town and the location it is in the country. A massive problem there is that ALOT of Asian people buys multi million dollar homes and leave them to deteriorate and get overgrown. It's a big controversy here as it's just the kind they want to keep for investment. Have a great time guys.
