Hello Diane- years ago (I am 80) I paid a lot of money for a Beginners Watercolor afternoon at a famous Garden. As it happened the well-known teacher ended up with 19 of her regular students and me. She of course was thrilled and changed her whole lesson for the afternoon. Then she noticed me. She told me, “paint a color wheel”, and continued to have fun With her class. Somehow I got my colors mixed up in my wheel and couldn’t figure out how to make them pastelish. At the end of the class she held up everybody’s beautiful paintings. Then she held up my pitiful wheel and made fun of it and the whole class laughed and laughed! I never touched a paintbrush again........until there was you! I happened on you by accident on You Tube, and I have had so much fun painting birds and butterflies and little landscapes and flowers and leaves........thank you so much for telling me not to worry, it’s all good, and for being such a talented teacher.
I'm so sorry this happened to you Dale. That's a horrible thing to go through, and what a terrible teacher to do that to you. So glad you found me, and welcome welcome to the channel. Please enjoy the videos !! Thanks for sharing, and glad to have helped to heal the wound xxx
Diane, thank you for teaching me how to sketch a butterfly. I've been struggling trying to make my butterflies look like butterflies. Not only is your technique helpful for symmetry, it's a way more relaxing way of sketching them. You continue to amaze me. Thank you so much. Can't wait to get started on my butterflies :)
Thanks Carolyn for your feedback, that’s great to hear. I’m always trying to think of ways of making things easy - for myself and for everyone else! It’s important the painting is a relaxing process without too much worry about the outcome. I’m glad it’s working for you! Enjoy your butterflies!
I always struggled with butterflies also and still o. Enjoy watching and hearing your narrative. Did not like the guitar background music. Thanks for sharing.
I so enjoy every one of your videos. I’ve watched you draw birds, tulips, poppies, and more. You love everything I’m interested in too! Your way of explaining, your tone, your style are all incredibly relaxing and I’m learning a lot. I’ve always struggled with butterflies so this will definitely encourage me to try these loose ones.
Thank you so much! It's very kind of you to say such kind things and I really appreciate your comments. A new easy butterfly painting is coming up soon! Happy Painting!
Dot from UK I have just found your channel. I love your calm and relaxed manner. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. I have tried to master watercolor for a long time now it'd been decades, maybe you can teach me what others have failed to do. I love the loose way you paint. You have inspired me to have a go, again. Thank you for sharing. Lots of love from the UK, Dot x.
Hi Dot! Welcome to the channel and I’m so glad you found me! I’m over her in France but of course hail from Blighty, specifically London originally and later Exeter. I hope you enjoy taking up watercolor again - it should be fun and I do try to make it accessible to everyone. Thanks for your kind comments, and looking forward to hearing from you again xxx
I have never been pleased with the butterflies I have drawn before. Wonderful method you created. Your video is wonderful ,inspiring and motivating. Thank you for the tracing as well.
I’m so glad lessons stay up since I missed this one and I love it! Thank you for the “c” shape tip!!! You are such an effective teacher ( from a teacher who recognizes such things!) I just appreciate learning from you so much!!
I loved this tutorial and saved it. I want to thank a dear friend and have decided doing this will be my first, as they love butterflies . Thank you for making and sharing this.
I too really like your style of teaching, your not out to make everything perfect and that’s okay, you make us all feel like we can do it just have fun and don’t worry too much, continue as you are just as we like you. Thank you for all your UA-cam videos you make I really appreciate them.
I like this butterfly 🦋 tutorial. I'm try to draw them and it was hard until I seen how you draw them so now I did my first butterfly 🦋!!! I couldn't believe it!! I did the wrong colors though. I put top wings a really light solid blue and did the bottom wings yellow with red edges lolololol 😂. Black body. It looks good 👍. I have to draw more now I'm hooked!! Thank you 😊. You should do another butterfly tutorial. Jk FLORIDA USA 🇺🇸.
I can't believe you are a wonderful teacher to us how to easily draw us. I was watching the video. That's so many beautiful butterflies. I believe you are an amazing artist.❤❤❤
Hi Diane, I discovered you yesterday and watched your tutorial on painting cute little birds… and I actually managed to paint some cute little birds, which I love, and have fun. School killed off any artistic streaks until recently when I have felt an overwhelming urge to do drawing and painting, but have no idea where to begin… your approach is perfect. I’m 51 so it’s not too late! Have you listened to Charlie Mackesy’s Ted Talk on art, on this subject… (just have fun, make a mess, be brave!) I think you would agree with him. Thankyou so much for reviving my faith in having some creativity that I can do and enjoy. I do enjoy your commentary ! 🙏🌈😁
thank you for your lovely videos... I feel so comfortable following your gentle and easy to understand explanations of what you are doing ... I am overcoming my lack of confidence in my painting and am trying lots of new things!
Hi Diane, I am enjoying your methods of painting and am a beginner. I find the small square pans are too small for me, can you advise the name of the larger round pans you use? Many thanks Sue
Wonderful! Sorry you're having trouble sleeping. I always listen to a Michael Sealey recording when I go to bed (he's on UA-cam) and he makes me sleep like a baby. ua-cam.com/video/sGDUogJmrLA/v-deo.html
I am so delighted to have come across you and your wonderful whimsical painting style .I’m sick in bed today and have had such fun with your painting programme . Thank you so much 💕🎉🌈
So sorry to hear that you aren't well Caryle but it's great that the videos have helped you feel better. Get well soon and happy painting (and watching!)
I have always found it difficult to draw butterflies I can't seem to get the wings even on both sides. Your tip of drawing two curved lines to begin with will make it a lot easier. This would be a good warm up exercise. Thank you.
You're welcome 😊 Eileen, I have always had the same problem. It doesn't matter if the two wings aren't identical, it looks better that way really, what seems to matter is the spot the wings exit the body and something about the proportions is important. The two curved line starting point seems to help! Have fun!
Hello once again!! I so loved this video the first time i watched it 8 months ago, But it seems I have I have zero memory on how to use your method of making butterflies. I've been looking for many months and finally found this tutorial again! So I saved this tutorial and have decided to make myself a journal of the techniques of my most favorite artists. You are my first artist in my journal. You are also my very favorite watercolor artist of all I've ever watched. I find how you talk so softly and teach so clearly makes me want to run away to paint despite my lack of abilities. You encourage me. My biggest hurdle is keeping my spirits up when what I turn out looks like a hot mess 😮 !! I am working on being realistic about my results. Nothing is going to happen overnight. Did you take lessons as an artist? Or did you learn by trial and error? Were you born artistically minded? My daughter is an artist and she says anyone can learn. I can only wonder. I know I have the view and sight of an artist. I feel my heart beat in color and images. Yet putting it down in a medium it can be seen by others is a true challenge. Photography helps, but it's not the only way I crave. Taking what the soul sees, what the eyes see and making the translation to the physical is hard; a very special talent. You very much have this.
Hi Cheryl, sorry you had so much trouble re-finding that video! If that happens again, please do send me a message by email and I’ll give you a link to it. I don’t know how familiar you are with the way UA-cam organises (haha) the videos but it’s very confusing. Here’s a tip though. If you are looking for something of mine, go to google, and type in diane antone studio and then the key word of what you’re looking for. Example in this case would be “diane antone studio butterflies”. You will hopefully get a result which brings up all my butterfly paintings. You can click on the one you want and it takes you straight there. Hope this helps. On your other points, you sound like an artist to me. I think you’ll get there, just keep painting, that’s all you can do. I didn’t train at art school, I am what they call “self taught” and I don’t think I have any particular talent, I have just always tried to learn. I have been interested in making anything and everything since I was a small child, all crafts fascinate me, painting is the most accessible thing, something you can do wherever you are. I’ve travelled a lot! What you think is a hot mess, someone else will love. We are our own harshest critics. If your daughter is an artist, so are you, otherwise how would she have become one? Sending you love and appreciation and much encouragement. You will get there.
My 141 th. I painted this one a while ago but that was before my challenge. So not bothering the season I watched it with pleasure again. ( your paper wasn't absorbing at all so it looks😅) Thanks for the drawing tip and have a ice day 😊wim
I am just getting started with watercolor so I am binge watching your videos. You are an amazing artist and I hope to get better with time. Thank You for sharing your talents with us❤
Wooo! Another fun one Diane! I love how you teach tricks to draw something easier! I'm usually so caught up in making it "right" and following a reference photo. This was so fun to draw then just play with colors without stressing. Are mine perfect? No, but I think they are pretty and this was fun and relaxing to do. I added another butterfly from another of your tutorials. :)
Thanks Lisa for your support and interest in my videos. I do feel that there is a lot of unnecessary perfectionism in many people's art, whether beginners or experts, and the fun for me is seeing what happens and then making it work. That's one reason commissions are harder for me and I rarely do them, as the serendipity is so much part of what I do!

just love this, but why am i finding this so hard, tried with good paper, wet on wet and just touching , it goes to a blur, not the pretty runs. tried lots of water, little water, straight paint, watered down. suppose this is the beauty of watercolour. Thank you so much. I'm totally new to painting and through your lovely, calm way of working, I am slowly embracing watercolour painting. Your videos are all so doable even for a newcomer, and your whole attitude allows everything. Thank you so much for giving this lovely gift of painting, you're helping me heal and grow a part of me that had never felt safe enough to create.
I get the brushes made by this manufacturer, "Drawell" brushes in Japan. They are very inexpensive, and if you order several the postage isn't too bad, they still work out at a good price. The ones I use are Golden Nylon Series 11-2, and I use mostly sizes 7or 9 and 10 and 13. I also use the Maestro ones, and I have sizes 3, 5 and 7 for more detailed work as they have a better point. Here's the website. The owner is a very friendly and polite Japanese gentleman. If you email him he will send you a pricelist in dollars. www.drawell.co.jp/english/product.html The watercolor pencils are from amazon - check out my shop here amazon.com/shop/dianeantonestudio
Hello, Diane, I just discovered you today and have watched your dragonfly and butterfly tutorials. My favorite watercolor paintings are typically loose, but I find it difficult to loosen up my own paintings. I believe these two tutorials will help immensely. I look forward to practicing them soon. Thank you for sharing.
I always draw butterflies from side on as it's easy but thankyou for this little trick I'm going to my art class this morning I'm going to dazzle them all with my new found skill 😁 x

My 141 th. I painted this one a while ago but that was before my challenge. So not bothering the season I watched it with pleasure again. ( your paper wasn't absorbing at all so it looks😅) Thanks for the drawing tip and have a ice day 😊wim
Yes that paper was weird!!!
Great tutorial! Thanks 💜. I love the background music. I’d like to know who it is. ☮️
Thanks, I’m not sure about the music, it might be in the description…
Love this, but unfortunately, I could barely see what you were drawing. OH wait ... you just said you would have the drawing on your website. Cool!
Sorry about that, we've improved our camera since then! But all our paintings have sketches for free on the website dianeantone.com
So Right !!!!!
Finally! You showed me how to paint a butterfly! These little beauties always came out lopsided no matter what I did. I notice you often draw an outline before you paint. How is it that the line doesn't show through the lighter watercolors? And as to the watercolor pencil you used to finish up the butterflies, what color did you use? I find I learn so much from you. I enjoy you soft, kind voice so much. Makes me smile and feel peaceful.
Hi Cheryl, so glad you are finding the videos helpful still! Yes, I often draw an outline, but if you use a watercolor pencil in a light color, say light grey, it will blend into the paint and not stay visible once you have painted. The one I used finally was a black Staedtler watercolor pencil like this one amzn.to/3JBvesQ
Wonderful! Thank you for sharing your technique. I am new to watercolors so this really helps.
My pleasure 😊
I love this! I’m a beginner that can’t draw so I appreciate your videos that make it seem like I can do this. I learned that you really need something with a bit more pigment than watercolors from dollar tree. I have $20 to spend $30 max. Can you recommend a watercolor set that you think is the best for that price range?
Hi Misty, thanks so much for your question and your comment! If I were you, I would definitely start out with the MeiLiang paint set - here’s a link to a set that falls in your budget. www.amazon.com/dp/B07FYG3BBV?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamzdianeant-20&creativeASIN=B07FYG3BBV&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.L7XAJ0SVZAT7&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_m_asin
Thank you. Had lots of fun with these…
Lovely! Thank you for making this!
I have struggled to have matching wings. Thank you for solving that for me.

Thank you Diane. Lovely lesson,
Enjoyed watching this video. Will be trying draw and paint similar
Wonderful!
Hi Diane! Thank you for this tutorial ❤
just love this, but why am i finding this so hard, tried with good paper, wet on wet and just touching , it goes to a blur, not the pretty runs. tried lots of water, little water, straight paint, watered down. suppose this is the beauty of watercolour. I'm sure when mastered it's wonderful. just wish i can get a grip of it soon.
Hi Carole, can you tell me exactly which watercolour paper you are using? The most likely answer to your question is that the paper isn’t the right sort. Let me know and I’ll see if I can help.
Beautiful!!! Thank u for the wonderful art lesson. New friend here 👍🏼
Hi and welcome to the channel! So glad you found us! First thing in the morning here and you’re the first comment of the day! Double welcome!

Oh my, I have learned how to draw my favorite insect. AMAZING!!!
Hi Diane. Is your paper on a slant board or flat surface? Thx for inspiring us all!
I usually paint on a level surface, I don’t remember whether I had this one on a slant but it’s not necessary to do so.
Love this! I am learning so much!

Where can I purchase a watercolor pencil and brushes from Japan ?
I get the brushes made by this manufacturer, "Drawell" brushes in Japan. They are very inexpensive, and if you order several the postage isn't too bad, they still work out at a good price. The ones I use are Golden Nylon Series 11-2, and I use mostly sizes 7or 9 and 10 and 13. I also use the Maestro ones, and I have sizes 3, 5 and 7 for more detailed work as they have a better point. Here's the website. The owner is a very friendly and polite Japanese gentleman. If you email him he will send you a pricelist in dollars. www.drawell.co.jp/english/product.html
The watercolor pencils are from amazon - check out my shop here amazon.com/shop/dianeantonestudio
