Your node version is most likely out of date. Node JS 6 was the first version to handle ES2015 modules. Check your Node version by running node -v

Pusher is great but it has its limitations, it's free up to a certain number of connections.
Are there any alternatives other than subscribing a service somewhere even though free (up to a point)?

I think that Pusher provides a free plan that includes up to 100 simultaneous connections, up to 200k total messages per day, and up to 100 peak connections per day. Other free alternatives are Laravel Echo Server, Laravel WebSockets and Event broadcasting with Redis.
