@@SnepBlepVR it’s not safety that’s the problem it’s boarding. the ride loads using a moving conveyor belt. if one person takes 5 seconds too long to board they have to stop the loading area and it puts the cars out of sync and requires the system to start slowing cars on the actual ride using break zones. this means if the ride hosts ever have to do an all stop at the loading area the ride has to stop all cars on the entire roller coaster. this is known as a cascade, and with 12 cars on the track, it could take upwards of 30 minutes to resume peak operation timing after the ride is stopped in this way. the ride does have a buffer zone built in which is an extra section of track between the end of the ride, and the station loading area where they can stop or slow cars meaning they won’t always have to trigger a cascade stop if they stop the loading system, but once the buffer fills up, the only way to get the ride back to peak timing is to expedite boarding passengers and increase the speed of the loading conveyor so the buffer zone clears out. ironically, rushing passengers actually can cause them to board more slowly which means another all stop and yet another cascade. they have been able to work on the timings to get the ride to work with 10 cars but 12 cars is not able to recover from a all stop in the boarding area quickly enough for them to consider it. hope this makes sense.
30 trains was a regular thing at Space Mountain at MK and not at that all unusual. ( I was at Disney World from 2000 through 2002) there were two sides each with the capacity of 15 trains with B side being to your right of the Control Tower(where folks with mobility issues went) as you walk into the loading area and A being on the left. When the park was slower we utilized B side more because it had the elevator for evacuating folks with mobility issues and incidentally that side often ran a little slower when we were at capacity for the same reason. I remember the first time I worked Tower I thought my head was gonna explode watching all those lights navigate the track display. The trick was to chill out and just let your fellow cast and the computer do the work realizing there was only a couple of key points you needed to pay attention to. Also there was two people in Tower and you were only responsible for one side with 15 trains. It really helped if you vibed with that person well. I would say that commonly it was usually 12 to 14 trains but as I said 15 per side was not unusual and I remember getting much GSM praise every time we maxed our theoretical capacity even going inexplicably over it sometimes. That said I will fully take the responsibility for at least one cascade.... Maybe two during the time I worked there(2001-2002 at SM) and both were in Tower LOL. Resetting the whole dang ride from a cascade is a pain in the ass but a welcome break from the guests sometimes and certainly better then say if someone's WIG as in hair, flies off and gets stuck in the block brakes somewhere which yes actually happened keeping us down for five hours ish. I also remember sitting at the top of the lift hill waiting to reset my block zone literally for hours one day for some weird incident where they couldn't figure out that a block sensor was actually just bad. During that particular incident, the guy I was dating happened to be in the zone across the lift hill from me so we spent part of that time making out LOL. Those who worked at the time will know who we are (G.C. & G.S. Our names are signed on the wall at A side unload with all the other cast members. That is unless it's been painted over by now.) The ride technically has two stations; a load and unload, but both are the slow moving, conveyer belt design you can find on many dark rides. Both stations can fit multiple trains at once so while 6 trains are on the course at once, the rest are crawling through the station. As one train hits the brake run and enters the station, another leaves the station, and the cycle repeats.
