No, you are right, the speed ramp was really weird at the end. Makes it feel too gimmicky. I yelled at the TV "Why did they do that!?" when seeing it live. That being said the whole thing was awesome as usual.
I totally agree. The moment you prove that part of the shot was done in post you call the rest of the shot into question. It also really jumped out at me the first time I saw it, called attention to itself, and didn't look good to me in it's own right.
Yes thats the word I was looking for. Gimmicky. Instead of allowing the trick to stand on its own they tried to Monty Python it. No offense to Monty Python of course just that this magic trick was not really a comedy bit.
You can imagine their thought process:- "Hmm. We've got 3 bits of mime that are a little tricky, and one bit of awesome illusion. Let's show the 3 bits of mime in full detail but we'll speed through that illusion thingy. Nobody wants to see that on a magic show!"
For season two please have a magician in the editing room, i feel like the magic some times feels fake. I have follow you guys for years and i have never fell like that. That's why i blame it on the editing
Because magicians are crazy. Look up Max Malini's ice trick, wherein Malini would produce a large block of ice from under a borrowed hat at a dinner party. Note that this was well before freezers were common, so he had to source the ice before the party and likely carry it on him the whole time, melting. Half of magic is just people not believing someone would go to such lengths for a trick, such as spending HOURS practicing a single move to make it invisible.
Also a magician: I thought the speed ramp was a bad choice. It made it all seem a bit fishy. Anyways - these videos are amazing, so thanks for sharing the stories!
Thanks Wes cause we dont get that option to see big trick where i live. So appreciated. Thank you. Awesome work. You guys rock and work hard. I like the speed ramp for the very reason you said. Adds a little bit of humour.
I'm not a magician, I just watch a lot of magic. I agree as an observer, the speed ramping at the end of the trick doesn't make sense if they're gonna show the reveal of the method at the end of the show anyway. I'd rather see the illusion at its proper speed as intended by the magicians so we know what it was supposed to look like and have a chance to work it out without having cameras change anything. I really love these physical ones (even though I'm sure Eric and Alex didn't!). A lot of precision needed but so much payoff!
The levitation would have looked so much better if it would've been a steady, even speed. The Whole point of the cold open is to have 1 complete uncut, unedited shot. As soon as it is sped up at any point it completely throws the "unedited" part out the window and destroys the validity of the whole trick.
I just assumed you were using more than one umbrella :p As for the sped up footage, I noticed it too and it seemed bit weird, my first guess was that the lifting was too slow and possibly at different pace, so they sped it up to hide it. EDIT: Oh, you think it is okay if I watch it with Canadian VPN on Netflix?
Using a VPN to get around region-locking is against Netflix's terms and conditions, so they could technically ban you or something, but afaik they don't actually enforce it.
Loved it!!! I agree the Speed Wrap to the Trick made it look more like a Camera trick then Magic, someone needs to have a talk with those guys in the editing department
Another awesome cold open🤘😁 Really love the vibe on this 1. ...but ya I completely understand what you meant about Chris's part. I felt the same way when I saw this 1 for the 1st time, that it was a bit odd they speed ramped Chris like that. Still very cool shot ya got & I appreciate it even more when learning what actually happens behind the scenes🙏✌️
The way I was imagining the trick was having the umbrella attach to a hoist or crane line that pulled Chris up. Always amazing when the same trick can be done in so many ways
Daniel Garcia and Marcus Eddie running practical effects is a hell of a team! I don't know Enrico's work, but I feel like I probably should. It sounds like he gives it that extra bit of style.
On the speed ramp: I'm not a magician and that way I saw it was like "yeah yeah you get it he's going up were just gonna speed it up" the bus is the background and such didn't make me think it was gimmicky, but rather was just to save time. 😊
Daniel has such a fabolous mind for magic. As you said, LOVE the low tech, almost pure sleight of body trick lol You cant pick better guy for consultant in an all arround magic show than mr Garcia. Love his work back from the projects, that was also a killer, how many there were, five??? How many tricks are there and all workers, if Sankey released that there would half idiotic vanish whatever with a damn frenh drom and that would be ten different tricks, a spoon with the flick, a this and that. And than the other half would have half time full of half baked ideas lol. PS. Daniel Garcias Shade is THE perfect coin matrix. No additional coins, literally impromptu borrow frour coins and go. And its fooling as hell. One of the best picks to invest time and learn it, I performed this million times I think
Sometimes I watch the reveal and the way I thought they did it would have been easier. I figured out the scaffolding outside the window, but assumed they used an elector winch to pick him up. Agree with all the other comments that the ramp speed at the end cheepend the best part of the illusion. BUT still hand it to you guys for coming up with creative illusions and adding subtle elements to sell the illusions in a single camera shot with no edits. Thumbs up!
I'm no magician but been fascinated with how magic is done since I was about 12yrs old that was over 25yrs ago now and I love and appreciate magicians even more knowing how much effort goes into their act. Your are an awesome foursome
Brilliant 🤯🤟. The work, time and effort that goes into each cold open is amazing - and this one was no exception. I agree that there was no need for the speed ramp - but at least it didn't take anything away from a really cool cold open. I don't get to see #BigTrickEnergy over here (yet 😉), so I really appreciate these videos. Cheers Wes - great job 🤟
Love "Big trick energy" Crew . I fall in love with magic watching you dudes on youtube. Is there any way for us people from Europe to watch "Big trick energy" ??? Ifsomeone know a way pls tell me.
At 0:49 the lamp post in the background fully made me think there was a rope / harness connected to Chris and I was racking my brain trying to figure out how you got it connected when he was spinning the umbrella around
Wes, Not having been in the edit suite either there could be many justifications for ramping down the frame rate on Chris's lift. The most obvious was as he was being lifted on the scaffolding gag, followed by the arm drag, more of his belly is exposed. Blowing the lift portion of the effect. So, I think wrongly, the Magic Capes decided to speed up the visual to down play the protruding, hairy, flesh orb. But there were other elements of the open which could have been done MUCH better. First the location crew SHOULD have looked for a Diner/Coffee Shop with two front doors. The first door on the corner of the shop. Then as Chris walks down the street, crossing at the intersection, the camera crew would enter the shop from that corner entrance. The camera continues it's tracking shot of Chris. As he continues walking down the street OUTSIDE the stage window. When he makes his entrance through the second door we see him coming behind the other three goofballs. He goes straight to the stooge sisters. Talking them up. The team exits the shop for the gag. Next since the umbrella is so monochrome get two freeking bumbershoots. Forget the toss. Total waste and potential of flashing the toss. The HOT AIR WES is ok, sort of. Its just a gimmick to get you form Stage Left to Stage Right. There are many other effects that could have been used. I think its a cheap out. But Chris does make his entrance with the twin parasol. The two pantamines of the elevator drop and the stairs decent really only work to fill time for you and Chase to climb the scaffolding. Also the two guys telegraphed the effect L O N G before they carried it out. Who's to say there isn't a sidewalk elevator if you don't show the solid sidewalk. Then the WORST EFFECT. The Lift. Even my 8 year old Grandson told me how it was done before the reveal. A better effect would have been after you blow your way off stage the other three go chasing after you as far as center stage. They look befuddled at each other. After a few beats one guy continues after you. Chris uses the distraction to stand on the lift rig. And you and Chase use the delay to climb the scaffolding to your spots. Instead of the two guys lifting the gag and Chris's fat ass, the rig is connected, on the outer ends by ropes, pulleys, and most importantly, Chris's weight in counter balances. In his case it would best to use dead weight. This would take the stress injuries off the other two, who could work their way to the pulley ropes, and lift him more evenly & steady. Your arm grab remains as is. FADE TO BLACK. ~Jim
I agree, fast fwd fd it up, makes the whole thing look like camera trick. Magic is already sketchy on video. I don’t think that is just a magic take. It’s a magic show.
At the end i directly noticed it was done fast forward and that it not belonged to your normal magic vid's. And in magic it's important to let the viewers not notice manipulations.... Anyhow, still good :)
It always feels like a bunch of little things are done... strangely? The Lift platform could have been built with the boards (Stand on) below the poles (to Lift Chris) eliminating two "Stumble" dangers. Bunny could have stayed Below Frame, braced Wes on the Skateboard pushed him, then assisted A&E with their stunts. Some Rigging (with Pulleys for Mechanical Advantage) could have been above Chris, Wes could have "Attached" that to the Umbrella, leaving A&E + Bunny, to Pull Chris up (Wes Grabs Chris when he can from above to help), with Pulleys Halving (or more) his Weight, which means the "Lift Platform" could be eliminated entirely as long as Chris can hold onto the Umbrella long enough to get out of Frame. Otherwise, include the "Lift Platform" and a more complicated Pulley / Rigging to lift him on it. That started out "Simpler" but got away a bit at the end.
Now you explain how it’s done you see a sliver of the scaffolding as Chris walks in and you can see the bunny pulling you in the reflection of the bus lol only reason I noticed is I rewind the videos after I find out how it’s done to just to compare from knowing to not knowing
I get the speed ramping because of that’s how a lot of the umbrella lifts seem to be in cartoons and such but the whole thing that’s so cool about these is it isn’t altered so it struck me weird
Yo i live around here, i ride a unicycle and do tricks with it (at skateparks and stuff) would be cool if you need someone on a uni to do one of your intros :)
Yeah totally! I thought the speed up was covering for a timing issue or something, as if someone was hooking up a crane to a the top of the umbrella. Shame they did that. Though by the way- congrats on getting to do fun stuff with your friends for a job. Crushing it!
There are two problems with that fast speed that make it blow off; the first one is it's technically not speed ramping, since the speed doesn't increase/decrease smoothly, it changes drastically from one frame to the next, and that's why it puts the spectator off so much (I think it's too fast as well). The second one is speed ramping won't look good if there's movement in the background that spoils it, in this case the traffic. But well, nice trick nonetheless, I enjoy these explanations :)
Love this one, but I do think the end with Chris feet flying of much faster is abit weird, and I'm more of a normal but never ever normal. So that's me. Love BTE❣💚
Yeah, I agree; the speed ramp was a little too much and seemed edited at the end. It definitely helps to have an editor who is also a magician, or at least a magic enthusiast.
One question, why not hook up a pulley system to raise Chris? Would have make it a lot easier to lift and control the raise without hurting anyone backs Really cool opening though!
No, you are right, the speed ramp was really weird at the end. Makes it feel too gimmicky. I yelled at the TV "Why did they do that!?" when seeing it live. That being said the whole thing was awesome as usual.

Completely agree with you, it's just weird to speedramp something that's supposed to be a continuous shot. Great work as always Wes!
The speed ramp of Chris made the impossible part look like a camera trick.
Imagine thinking speed ramping that part was a good idea?!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤮
I thought the same thing!
Yeah why did they do that? I'd have preferred it without it
The speed ramp was what stood out the most the first time I saw this, and I tried to figure out why, maybe Chris's showed too much tummy?
You can imagine their thought process:- "Hmm. We've got 3 bits of mime that are a little tricky, and one bit of awesome illusion. Let's show the 3 bits of mime in full detail but we'll speed through that illusion thingy. Nobody wants to see that on a magic show!"
Fantastic stairs eric.
Speed ramp was a bad idea, makes it all look fake. Love the reveal ! Thank you for sharing with us.
For season two please have a magician in the editing room, i feel like the magic some times feels fake. I have follow you guys for years and i have never fell like that. That's why i blame it on the editing
My first thought after seeing the trick was why did they pick the biggest guy to levitate
@@bloodgain hours lol you mean years to cover bases incase move fails
I love how you have enough time and money to set up scaffolding and all sorts. But you can only afford one umbrella.
…and no budget for any beefy stage hands to do the lifting!
Tru TV, BYO Camera, and Wardrobe.
Seriously why not use two umbrellas lmao
Also a magician: I thought the speed ramp was a bad choice. It made it all seem a bit fishy. Anyways - these videos are amazing, so thanks for sharing the stories!
Thanks Wes cause we dont get that option to see big trick where i live. So appreciated. Thank you. Awesome work. You guys rock and work hard. I like the speed ramp for the very reason you said. Adds a little bit of humour.

Thanks for the in depth breakdown sir! I have enjoyed every single one of these.
I love watching these! Thanks Wes.
Very whimsical. Love it!
Big Trick Energy on Netflix!!! Best news ever. I'll be able to watch your show. LOVE IT
One of my favorites so far!

VPN works
Using a VPN to get around region-locking is against Netflix's terms and conditions, so they could technically ban you or something, but afaik they don't actually enforce it.
The coolest thing about these, is that it takes us inside the minds of magicians, and how they think. Amazing!
Great video great effect yall
These are so dope.
I LOVE the video and the fact that it was filmed in Vancouver! Awesome video guys!
Add my vote: speedup threw off the effect of the whole trick for me.
Learn from the best magic-site! Dude, you nailed it.
Great show
Clever idea
I've always, just like other kids, never looked up for a Monday but since u started making these videos I've always been waiting for them 😁
Great job guys!!! Poor Alex and Eric! 😬😂
Loved it!!!
I agree the Speed Wrap to the Trick made it look more like a Camera trick then Magic,
someone needs to have a talk with those guys in the editing department
Legend!! 🤜💥🤛
I love how simple everything was behind the scenes. Difficult but simple
Congrats!
Awesome 😎
I agree completely, I was not a fan of the speed up, but great job on the illusion. I loved season and 1. Hopefully there will be a season 2.
Another awesome cold open🤘😁 Really love the vibe on this 1.

Love the end of this video Wes, you're hilarious! I agree the speed ramp was weird.
Love the channel ,love the content 👌
I agree, the speed up looked hokey.
It was dope you are overthinking brother🤝🏻😊👌👍
The way I was imagining the trick was having the umbrella attach to a hoist or crane line that pulled Chris up. Always amazing when the same trick can be done in so many ways
Daniel Garcia and Marcus Eddie running practical effects is a hell of a team! I don't know Enrico's work, but I feel like I probably should. It sounds like he gives it that extra bit of style.
Hey wes pls explain I love/dove you act from ep-1 love your content
I know nothing about magic or cinematography, and I agree with you about the speed ramping.
On the speed ramp: I'm not a magician and that way I saw it was like "yeah yeah you get it he's going up were just gonna speed it up" the bus is the background and such didn't make me think it was gimmicky, but rather was just to save time. 😊

OMG, you guys are IN Vancouver?!?!? I literally work near here!
Bunny is the unsung hero... 😁😁🐰🐰🐇🐇
Do you know if there will be another season?
Speed ramping was a bad, bad idea. Great intro, great content, keep it up !!
Wait this is on Netflix?! Ok, I get to watch it all now.
Yea, I have similar sock. I love purple ! I call them lucky socks! :P
The speed ramp was indeed a disservice. Also, I think a much smaller umbrella would have been really funny.
Wes, Big Trick Energy will be renewed for season 2? We hope so .
Love "Big trick energy" Crew . I fall in love with magic watching you dudes on youtube. Is there any way for us people from Europe to watch "Big trick energy" ??? Ifsomeone know a way pls tell me.
realised straight away cos of reflection off cars and accross the road but still very good

Isn't Eric supposed to do one of these reveals with you?? He's so funny, wish he posted more 😕
Next week
I think the speed ramp looked dumb, but it is a cool trick.
Wes were could i watch big trick energy in the uk
Hey, Vancouver.
Wes, you guys need those stretchy back supports that they have in the drug store. Been using them for all my crew jobs since film school.
I agree, fast fwd fd it up, makes the whole thing look like camera trick. Magic is already sketchy on video. I don’t think that is just a magic take. It’s a magic show.

I think Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke would be very proud if they would know that this cold open is named after their movie! Great job as always!
Was expecting levers or teeter totter type device for the lift to help lift and control height.
Sheeeshhh g
Now you explain how it’s done you see a sliver of the scaffolding as Chris walks in and you can see the bunny pulling you in the reflection of the bus lol only reason I noticed is I rewind the videos after I find out how it’s done to just to compare from knowing to not knowing
you did great dont second guess, you have good instincts eh.
I get the speed ramping because of that’s how a lot of the umbrella lifts seem to be in cartoons and such but the whole thing that’s so cool about these is it isn’t altered so it struck me weird
Is this a Canada thing?
I wonder why didn't you use two identical umbrellas? Also, is the bunny costume related to that Snowball from the other video? :D
heyy wes
4 seconds into the video, I notice that the restaurant Chris walks into is...closed. :-)

I think the speed ramping is because there is a pause between the lifting and the pulling
I agree with you Wes. The whole idea of every open is NO CAMERA TRICKS. And then the editor just pooched it.
👍🏻
why didnt you guys make a pulley system with a winch to lift chris
I'm not a magician, but like magic, and I agree it was weird to do the speed ramp.
Love this one, but I do think the end with Chris feet flying of much faster is abit weird, and I'm more of a normal but never ever normal. So that's me. Love BTE❣💚
when is the boxing match between eric and alex
The speed ramp at the end was probably done to try to hide the fact that the transition from lift to pull wasnt the smoothest
If youre arguing with a man in a bunny costume, you have already lost... He clearly doesnt give af...
Good work chaps!
Fractions? So you know some math terminology. Good on ya! Lol....been looking forward to Mondays lately. I wonder why. ROCK AND ROLL ALL DAY LONG!!!
This trick I decoded at first sight. :)
Hahaha I was wondering who the bunny was
How to watch big trick energy in europe
Why not have multiple identical umbrellas? I’m confused
Hilarious! The speed up made it a nice funny ending...I thought anyway. Not a magician, just like to watch your amazing tom foolery. lol
i love u
Yeah, I agree; the speed ramp was a little too much and seemed edited at the end. It definitely helps to have an editor who is also a magician, or at least a magic enthusiast.
Like normal, team was carrying Chris through the performance 😉.
The speed ramp was wierd. Maybe if the background wasn't dynamic it could've worked.
You are totally correct. The lift was too fast. It would have been so much better at real speed.
One question, why not hook up a pulley system to raise Chris?
Would have make it a lot easier to lift and control the raise without hurting anyone backs
Really cool opening though!
