Lifting the legs was definitively the main advantage of Sean's strategy since Izzy love starting his fight by chopping the legs. In muay thaï it's a strategy often used by "muay khao" (pressure fighter that mainly use knees). Awesome video!
Yep, avoiding and checking the low kicks was key because while Izzy on the come up had some amazing KOs, Champion Izzy was the low kick counter striking point fighter. Sean had an amazing game plan. Congrats to his coaches!
@@damienoptc7222Seans weakness is power. Izzy certainly couldve done a lot better, but I think Alex is a worse matchup for Sean. Sean's defense is great, but he is willing to take a shot to give two. A decent enough strategy against Izzy when it works, but a very dangerous one against one punch man Alex.
@@damienoptc7222intentionally to justify Alex title contention fight hence why the ufc has been looking out for sean since also why sean and Pereira are cool with eachother
It can't be said enough about how much effort Bayliun puts into these videos. So much work goes into the research portion of these videos, it's ridiculous. He is an absolute natural when it comes to presenting. I think it is really impressive how clear his points get across in a short amount of time. Really cool to see everyone enjoying this new type of video, we've had a lot of experience with the PPV breakdown shows. Stuff like this keeps it fresh for us and we're constantly trying to diversify the channels content.
Dricus vs Whittaker was a perfect example of this. Dricus landing that Southpaw jab on Whittaker time and time again catching Whittakers blitz was perfect gameplanning.
that performance from Cody against Dom will always be one of my favorites.. Really wish Cody could have shown that restrain and ability in his other fights but it was a one of a kind performance non the less
Yeah I always wonder how he might have done against TJ if he had shown more restraint, I don't know if it would have made a difference, but I suspect it would... he definitely could have done better, right?
Cody was trained for years to beat Cruz, that's pretty much it. Cruz actually figured out Cody himself in round 5 when he jabbed up Cody which contrary to dumbass fans say, WAS NOT Cody taking the round off because he already won, Cody has no answer for jabs as proven in the Rob Font fight several years later. By that point however, it was too little, too late for Cruz.
Yes brother! Technical breakdowns ftw! Eternal content if you ask me. So much history and nuance towards styles. That Strickland fight proves that possibilities in MMA are as deep as they are unknown. Great to see you guys track this and paint pictures for us martial arts enthusiasts.Thank you for all the great content!!
I have no doubt a lot of work went into this video. But goddamn I could have watched and listened to you break down 15 or 20 fights like this. Thank you gents.
That's why Cody also lost immediately afterward and continues to lose against high tier opponents, because he didn't just have a gameplan to beat Dominick, no, he had been training his entire fighting style SPECIFICALLY to beat Dominick, because Dom was that dominant for so long. It also shows how unorthodox Dom's style is that only someone who trained their entire career for it was able to shut it down.
I could watch these style of videos all day. Another good one would be a breakdown of how the fighters from the "top ten fighter who never evolved" video got figured out by their opponents. Smooth Ben vs Nate Diaz comes to mind. Also breakdowns of more signature techniques, jose aldo leg kicks etc
Really enjoyed this format as it is both entertaining and informative, so you can have great time and learn smth as a fighter 💪 Definitely continue this series 👍
lifting his legs also helps block the heavy body kicks, this is something we were taught in TKD. you can lift up your leg and put up your guard with your arms, now you have a reinforced guard against strong kicks, and also if your opponent lands wrong he could easily kick your elbow or knee and hurt himself, discouraging more attacks like it. Izzy not using any grappling hurt him more than Sean in this fight. he simply relied waaaaaaaay too much on kickboxing to carry him through this MMA fight
This was awesome. I really like this format as a fun and general discussion of the sport in between the more "notable" coverage videos. This is also accessible enough for more casual fans to follow along and learn more insights about the sport they're checking out a video on. Having the "prep" section at the beginning of each fight to establish what we'd be talking about and looking for was really helpful and informative to learn some more about the fighters' personal styles and reads. Cool. Bayliun is a natural at presentations like this, and the rest of the team that put it together and got it to us in style did a great job.
These kinds of videos have been great for me to send to friends that are newer to MMA. And honestly help me articulate the things I see but don't always know how to explain😂
This is a great breakdown video! Much quicker and easier to digest than a Like Thomas breakdown. For the folks that only have time to watch a quick video this is amazing.

Really like this one. Substantiative analysis we just don't get elsewhere. More in-depth ones please!
Another important key to Sean's win I think is how Izzy never throws more than 2 shots. It's always a 1-2, cross, kicks. Just single, short shots which Sean is pretty much the best in the UFC against If Izzy started adding combos or threw those single shots as a trap for a big follow up then he could have put Sean out quick but Izzy has not done that since his Gastelum fight
4:30 yeah I loved this from Cody. First one to fight dom and not be blindly trigger happy ready to counter for counters sake. He figured out Dom throws out distracting weak punches to bait the poorly planned counter while he was on the move which created a stumbling off balance attempt to hit Dom. Then he could just simply reset and throw his own counter over the top to an off balance opponent. Cody just shoulder rolled and turned out to doms weak side. It made him literally stand and bang which we quickly realized is not dom’s specialty but it is Cody’s. Really love this fight . Dom had absolutely no back up for once
Talking about stand-up.... WHILE standing up. Pretty impressive. I like the new space too. That last point about Shawn's hip slip to Izzy's leg kick attempts was great. Thanks for the work!
I never comment on videos. I need more of these, please. It’s one thing to hear a breakdown, every MMA channel does that. It’s another see it played back or slowed down. Huge fan of this format, keep it up guys 🎉
I watch your channel's vids daily and this format is incredible! All of you are incredible at what you do and rediculously knowledgeable. Thank you for your passion for your craft. Fight IQ for years 😂
"How perfectly executed gameplans solved legendary fighters" should be the title . Cuz there are fighters who entered with the right gameplan but failed to win due to bad execution.
That Cody performance is still my no.1 example of a fighter sussing another out, master class. No matter how many times I watch the Mcgregor vs Poirier 1 fight, I can only see that left hook hitting the back of Dustin’s head. Rogan claiming it was behind the ear but with all the angles we get, I can’t see it. Strickland man, top flipping notch mate! I always thought that he would fight for the title one day, but lost that belief during the last 4-5 years, glad he came back and made me believe again!
Good analysis. You doing the movements in the studio works. You're pulling off a better description in general with that. The Cruz movements were accurate for sure.
Credit to all the coaches who watched tape developed the drills, training regimes, game plans and gave their fighter the confindence, encouragement and support to execute the plan.
This is a cool video, guys! I've always said Garbrandt was never really that skilled of a fighter; he was just extremely well prepared for Cruz, and was essentially trained to be that way from the start.
Never could've expected that Strickland would be the guy to pull out the most high iq 4d chess strat to shut down an atg striker like Adesanya I can't even lie
I thoroughly enjoyed this. I think you would benefit from having a resident mma fighter (preferably former/current UFC fighter but I imagine that would be very difficult to achieve) analyzing the fights with you. You did a fantastic job, but I think having the perspective of an actual cage fighter would make it even more fun.
this kind of half-breakdown, half-list type of a video is pretty fun and informative to watch. keep doing more of these please
