Now I see why a lot of South Koreans come to the Philippines and live there eventhough Philippines is a poor country. Clearly, money is not everything. They may be well-off yet depressed. In the Philippines, majority are poor to middle class, yet are more happier

I hate to say this, but the Koreans who go to live in the Philippines aren't going there to pursue happiness, but rather to exploit its corruption. Organized criminals can operate outside of the South Korean jurisdiction, and the Philippines authorities have better deniability by taking bribes from foreign groups. I was very disappointed to learn about this situation because the Philippines have even bigger of a serious problems with corruption, and the last thing they need is more of it from overseas. Being poor is one thing, but allowing foreign criminals to operate in the country just because they bring in money will only make them poorer in the long run.

@@salve1185 I agree with you, and you brought up a very important point that South Koreans of the criminal elements in the Philippines target other South Koreans, and this is why I pointed out that the Philippines authorities have a better deniability by taking bribes from South Korean criminals, because Philippines citizens tend to overlook Korean on Korean crimes. If you have public officials who are willing to take bribes from foreign groups, it is because they don't have a problem with the idea of bribery in general. This means they will dole out special favors and privileges to anyone as long as the price is right. It is just that it is easier for the public officials (not just in the Philippines, but anywhere in the world) to get away with taking bribes from foreign groups, since it is easily overlooked and does not get scrutinized as closely. Nevertheless, this still harms the Philippines citizens, albeit indirectly, since corruption gets not only reinforced, but goes unchecked. Corruption is a serious problem that hinders average citizens of the country to develop themselves, and to pursue better quality of life. For instance, how can an average citizen meant to create something valuable and start a business and make it grow for export when the corrupt authorities ensure that the already wealthy and powerful get more rich and powerful? Can a hard working, determined citizen of average status take a bank loan with a fair interest rate? Would anyone even want to start a business in a place where corrupt officials let certain criminals are free to operate as long as they pay enough bribes? The last thing the Philippines need is more corrupt public officials whose wealth and power grows by taking foreign bribes.
That being said, not all Koreans in the Philippines are criminals, and non-criminal Koreans that move there do so not to seek happiness, but mostly as part of their work in the government (foreign services, military liaisons, arms export etc), business (Samsung, Hyundai etc), or non-government organizations (charitable, religious, educational etc). As they are on TEMPORARY assignments, they do not settle there permanently. Those that seem to have settled there permanently are most likely fugitives from the law (outstanding charges in South Korea), fraudsters who swindled/laundered money out of S. Korea, or a part of the South Korean criminal enterprise. How do I know? They are the only types that have reasons to stay out of S. Korea permanently. Therefore, if you come across a S. Korean in the Philippines you should be very careful because, chances are, they aren't the type that you would want to make friends with. It is disappointing that S. Korea is exporting corruption in the form of these criminals, but it is just the reality of the country's out of control corruption. It is totally unfair to the Philippines to suffer any indirect damage, however small it is, as a result of South Korea's internal problems, especially given that the Philippines has its own share of problems that it must deal with.
Also, most Koreans aren't rich; as a matter of fact, I might even go far to say that they are BROKE. The latest household debt to the gross domestic product stands at a bit over 100%, which means most S. Koreans OWE more money than they make. If they have a net position in the negatives, they are far from being rich... They might APPEAR rich, but that is because of the country's problematic obsession with "looks over substance"
I must mention that there are many South Koreans that emigrate out of the country to seek happiness, though from my dealings them, they aren't that much happier than when they were back home, as they find themselves dealing with other problems - getting used to new culture and way of life, learning new language, making new social circles, finding jobs, discrimination etc. I know several of them who even returned back to South Korea. At the end of the day, it is up to South Koreans to work out their problems, because seeking happiness by moving overseas is not a guaranteed solution, and it is more or less a form of escapism. However, I can understand their sentiment because corruption has gotten out of control such that an average citizen doesn't have much leverage, and the situation is made worse by the current social division along the political spectrum. My criticism of S. Korea's current situation isn't because I dislike the country, but because of how far the country fell from its grace of being a hard working country even under constant threat of armed conflict. At this rate they are going to see more and more depressed people too demoralized to make much of themselves or to contribute to the society. Either way, I want to see them work out their own problems, and not let their problems affect other countries like the Philippines.

And this is what he told me and the reasons why he escaped. Koreans don't take failure as an option. Their ego and self respect are at another level. They believe if you work hard enough you will be successful or if you study hard you will be engineer or doctor. They refuse to believe that some people are born with low IQ. So when you fail you will be judged not good enough. When you're out, people will judge what car you drive, the way you dress, what brand designer clothes you wear, your hairstyle...You end it up spending lots of money for clothes to gain their artificial respect. South Korean hierarchy is like in medieval era. Your boss and your supervisor are always right. You can't say NO to them even you're right.

Urbanization always leads to more depression and suicide. People were not designed to live in such close proximity to others. People who live in rural areas are much happier than their city counterparts. People in smaller towns tend to have closer ties and stronger relationships with neighbors.
A reason specific to Korea that is leading to more depression is that they cheated their way to prosperity. Following the end of the Korean war, the country was devastated and one of the poorest in the world. In order to bring the country quickly out of poverty many japanese educated Koreans took power in South Korea. They brought with them a system designed to support specific families in several key industries. Companies like Samsung and Hyundai were formed during this time. The government poured money into lifting up these families and helping them form conglomerates. This helped these companies rise and eventually compete globally. These families wielded great power. While they helped transform Korea from poorest to one of the richest nations in the world, they also created a system where a young person derived value only from going to college and being hired by one of these conglomerates. Everyone wanted to be employed by Samsung, Hyundai, LG, etc. People looked down on those that labored, those that had skilled jobs like welding or construction. Which meant that few young people would pursue careers in skilled labor jobs. It created a tiered society much like the one that existed prior to the japanese invasion. With highly educated and wealthy at the top and tiers below them based on education level and type of employment. If you live in Korea and you have no education it means that you will find it hard to find a job, have difficulty finding a mate, and be ashamed around peers who have college educations.
It's an unenviable situation but then Koreans have always had a caste system. They derive pleasure from seeing themselves as better than others maybe more than people in other countries.

Before I speak, I am a Korean student. (There may be mistranslations in using translators.) And I studied why young people want to immigrate from Korea and why suicide rates are high. The Korean War always celebrates June 25. The Korean War was terrible. Around it were lands destroyed by war, people bleeding, dead families and friends. This immediately creates a social atmosphere in which children must be born on behalf of the dead, leading to a phenomenon called a baby boom. After the baby boom, there were Generation X, Generation Y, and Generation Z. (*The current generation is Generation Z, Generation Alpha.) The baby boomers put pressure on the next generation, Generation X, to get society back on its feet. In this environment, Generation X laid the foundation for political establishment and capital accumulation, which is the first 'freedom' encountered since the war. Following Generation Y, Generation X finally gives birth, and children from Generation X are called Generation Z. As a result, Gen Z's features are quite similar to Gen X's. Generation X will teach Generation Z the social pressure (mostly found in schools and workplaces) to revive a country learned from the baby boomers. This is counterproductive. The research that Generation X, who naturally started studying and studying, demands from Generation Z will lead to the peak of private education called 'academy'. Just as the world has changed, Generation Z has become dissatisfied with this situation, and some analysts say that the suicide rate has increased significantly as friends who have not overcome this social pressure commit suicide. (The stress of preparing retirement measures is sometimes blamed for the rising immigration rates.) In addition, Generation X tends to think that Generation Z should enjoy more freedom (as they were the first generation to experience freedom). This leads to false values that no one but themselves can treat children carelessly in any situation. Some issues have recently become an issue, and it is the reality of Korean society that hitting teachers is popular among certain students and that no action can be taken even if a teacher hits a teacher in class. This is the collapse of the teaching authority and also increases the suicide rate of teachers. In addition to these causes, numerous causes overlap, causing problems such as suicide rate, low birth rate, and depression in Koreans. Please refer to the above as one of many analyses. (It's hard to read because I'm not good at writing, but I hope you like it😉)

Koreans like others are proud people . Look at where they are now within the last 50 years . They are well known for their technology and manufacturing. They introduced Samsung /lg: Kia . K-drama and pop. And the lists goes on . To the world. To keep up with the trends . There is a cost. Which is pressure to come up with another inspiration. The problem is not within the Koreans culture. It’s the fault of the society as a whole . Who is demanding for more output . Like so many companies. Who is greedy . Demanding their staff to provide more output so the ceo can line their own pockets. How sad is that . Which comes back to our korean upbringing . To be part of the success . We need to be smart or attractive. And if u fail in any of these 2 categories. U r considered as a failure. I felt it here in North America. My parents instilled me with the same values . Not just 4 success but to be accepted/respect by others. As an adult i finally realizes the sacrifices my parents have to endure . So I can have a happy & easy life . Thank you Abba & Amma .

I do not make light of mental health issures. I believe every society should do its best to acknowledge the existence of mental health struggles and develop a treatment structure to help alleviate these struggles. But I disagree with portraying this as a specific condemnation of S. Korean society. I am American and I see and hear real examples of people (particularly young people) who became depressed enough to seriously harm themselves. My wife and I along with our friends had to watch our children closely as they grew to ensure they did not fall victims to the false societal programming that can lead a person to serious self-harm. We still watch over them to this day.
I believe S. Korean society is experiencing and reacting to the globalization of materialism. Materialism creates an unquenchable thirst for things. It requires of its followers an unrelenting pursuit of the best, the top, the newest, the biggest...etc. It has its own level of "Survival of the Fittess" meaness where winners and losers are designated on the most shallow of measurements-think clothing, cars, houses, income, college degrees (and from which schools), perceived status. For every designated "winner" in this "religion" there are millions of designated "losers." A person can be designated a "loser" even if he/she is actually living the better life in terms of health, peace-of-mind or financially! A financially secure person can be designated a "loser" because he/she is not living in the big house, driving a status car or wearing designer clothing/jewelry. In this system, the financially solid carpenter can be designated the "loser" even though he/she has the better net worth or income-to-debt ratio. The carpenter's sin in materialism is his/her occupation does not have the sufficient perceived societal status. Meanwhile the marketing manager is perceived a "winner" even though he/she has a negative net worth, is leveraged into the next generation and has to borrow money from the carpenter to stay afloat!
I hope more people-especially young people-in S. Korea and elsewhere will move toward minimalism as a countermeasure to the effects of materialism. This will help so many people see their true worth. It will help them reject many of the societal traps created by adherence to materialism. When people become better at rejecting materialism they can better direct their life energy. They will increase their ability to make the things in their lives contribute to their pursuit of happiness and fulfillment. This will help shield them from falling into feelings of hopelessness and depression. It will become harder for society to convince them they are "losers."

The trend among young South Koreans toward adopting anti-feminist beliefs is deeply alarming. South Korea has had a serious issue with gender inequality even before this trend began, yet young people (men especially) have somehow decided that it's women and feminism that are to blame for their economic woes. This is not a recipe for a healthy society.

I think it's probably widely purchased in South East and East Asia especially, maybe China, and that counts as the world too. here in the west nobody knows what soju is you're right. I purchased it and it tastes like nothing in my opinion, which is dangerous 😅 easy to get drunk on

I think it is the most consumed alcohol in southeast asia that's why it's said to be popular. Soju can be consumed by single person in one sitting, they drink it through meals (like water). So Maybe they assumed that it is popular because of the sales

Social norms oftentimes offers luxurious, fancy, fake things that people think is the ultimate way to happiness but in truth it will drains you to the point you will feel helpless, worthless and then boom! That's how evil works, his a liar ,he will promise you everything but in truth he can't gave you this things but only the ones above, the true living God. Happiness is self-worth,self love and a manifestation of God's love. You will be contented in everything, there will be a real peace in you! God bless everyone!

Personally, I think that education is important but to the extent of still having lessons at night and all are just over. It may be their belief that studying hard = success or good university = success, and if that is what the companies or workplaces see then I think you could never find someone's true potential or skill if you only focus on academics or looks, they take looks too seriously and I think they should just enjoy being themselves and focus on having a happy life with the people that love you and you love.
