If 3hr movies are going to start becoming the norm we need to start introducing intermission in movie theatres cause I always have to pee😂
🤣🤣
Omg, same, especially when you get a large soda
Honestly that’d be great
With that being said extra snacks as well lol
Lol. That's funny. I honestly could sit through a 4-hour movie, drink a large Iced tea, and still not have to use the restroom at any moment in the film. Luck of the draw, I guess.
Final scene was heart-rending tbh. Anyone whose ever experienced any degree of gaslighting in an abusive family dynamic will probably leave the theater shook. Never seen a movie like this and I don't think I ever will again lol
Ari Aster does it again! Even with the 3 hour runtime, the story and acting kept me engaged the entire time! It definitely taps into what it's like living with anxiety and dealing with generational trauma.
Best of luck on the Pull Quote
I also teared up at the end! I actually turned to my partner and said “Is Ari Aster okay?” He may need a collective fan hug after this film especially the last scene. Super meta and chilling #airhugari ❤
💯💯💯💯💯
Horror has been a therapeutic outlet for me because I can channel my anxiety into films with ghosts and masked killers while being removed from the actual threat of danger. I haven't watched this one, but it strikes me as something that may hit too close to home to be as fun and cathartic of an experience. I don't doubt it is a brilliant film, though.
Same boat. Same with Skinnamarink and smile
I totally relate to this.
@@_SunscreenQueen_bruh what smile was just a stupid horror movie it didn’t rlly do anything special anything it tried was hella superficial def does not belong in the same category
Im not a film student, nor do I claim to possess an expertise in cinematography, but in my opinion this was horror - it’s what I would call a disturbed horror with elements of humor. Great review on your part!
Definitely worthy going to the cinema for this. The screening I went to were like 4 other couples but the silence as we were toned between amazement and disbelief was fantastic and like you say those moment were you are both laughing with disbelief while also wanting to cry... Iconic
As soon as I got home from this movie I started throwing up nonstop. I found out later there’s a stomach virus going around at work but at first I was like… this is clearly that movie’s fault somehow haha. But man what a ride of a film! It overwhelms all the senses. Definitely planning to see it in theaters again!
OMG I just finished it and WOW this film is a MASTERPIECE. As a therapist this film was the most accurate depiction of what it's like in the mind of someone with generational trauma, child abuse, and major anxiety. Wow. I'm going to be thinking about this for a long time.
I just have to wait for you next time! I fell for another “spoiler free “ review from a reviewer that I actually normally like, and a couple things got spoiled that I really didn’t want to know! ☹️ I appreciate how mindful you always are about spoilers, yet still so detailed in your description without spoiling anything. You are the best! Looking forward to this one. 😃😁
Oh no! I always have your back dont worry. I am SOOOO careful since i feel similarly, i hate spoilers
I cannot wait to see this movie!! At this point, I'm just beyond intrigued and need to see it for myself 🤣 Thanks for the review, Emma 🥰
Thanks for hanging with me!
10/10 for me, BEAU IS AFRAID is the best film since maybe Prospero's Books. A visual essay on consciousness, hermetic philosophy and spiritual rebalancing.
Aster weaves in recurring Kubrickian motifs: monoliths, masks, pentagrams, low-hanging circles, diamonds, along with obvious nods to each of SK's films and Wizard of Oz (emerald clothing/unconditional love, rainbows, brick, fib spirals). "You're the same-- except for your face and body" Elaine Bray (Light-Brick) to Beau. Goodbye stranger, hope to see your point of view. We see Beau through the elevator monolith on the left, representing Wendy Torrance's (The Shining) mental breakdown (see Wendy Theory-- Kubrick retelling Oz) and Beau's courageous half being locked in his mother's attic while she feeds him mind-control pills (Clockwork Orange ref). Sparks flying as the door opens symbolize The Covenent of Parts-- "They would be strangers in a land where they would become oppressed and enslaved. The Hebrew term for establishing a treaty between two parties is 'kritat brit' which literally means 'dividing'". Masks and monoliths are inverse of one another (1- Amalgamation of Mona's MW/medium-wave "employees" for her low frequency/vibration/red transmission/mask on wall - standing tall like the Virgin Mary/radio tower, 2- Stars revealed as audience viewing 4 monoliths in arena lit by cosmic latte (average color of universe), later seen exiting theater as if unaware of the starlight from behind/hitting their eyes). Flamingo (feeds young with milk resembling blood-- not Kosher--- that give its young beta carotene needed for pink color [Mona calls him both Angel and Carrot] with legs crossed into a 4 (YHWH/GOD) to the upper-left corner of Toni's doorway adjacent to a string of transparent pentangles signifying Beau's is one of an infinite line of tests to restore balance. Painful impact brings Beau into this strange stage-- strange bed, caretakers, sister, decorative aspects-- monstera plants throughout in pebbles-- no soil for Carrot/Beau to take "root" (chakras)-- evidenced as Grace "turns" on him (note inverse pentagrams on her son's bed)-- Beau similarly becomes an interference, impediment, hinderance to her grief-- on hands/knees with a baby mask/blue lips (cyanosis?). Roger, Grace, Mona and Dr. Cohen represent multiplicity in 4 directions, Beau as the unifying centerpoint. Roger carries an American football before he leaves to "Roger" Grace-- it's a prolate spheroid-- shape of nebulae, animal testis, atomic nuclei AND the MW logo-- he suggests Beau not perform any jumping jacks-- aka star jacks-- derived from the puppet toy-- activated by pulling string in opposite directions. "Don't incriminate yourself" written on a paper napkin-- ref to Ezekial 18:4: all souls are God's, his life not being his own to dispose of but God's alone (channel 78 on Roger/Grace's monolith ref to psalm 78-- narrative around the inverse relationship between God's goodness/man's badness) They have Beau's odyssey on DVR so we're watching from their TV/monolith while the 4 world elephants (Hinduism) support the 4 arena monoliths that project out-of-context recordings on the world. Our cinematic monolith/film screen reflects our inherent "otherness" back upon us, a conglomeration of stars eerily familiar but never among us/the living. The complete rainbow symbolizes Beau's 360 rotation rebalancing as he eventually rediscovers the wisdom, empathy, and finally courage to confront his mother/Wicked Witch, his foot/carrot/flamingo leg stuck in the "moon pool" as the fish gets his wish (note how he tugs at his therapist's prescription, winning the larger bone/his secret wishes-- a real family, that she were dead-- we later see a wishbone in a tree outside Mona's house-- Mona spoke/listened to Beau through every character he interacts with, including his puppet therapist, confirming her love from her POV.)
I saw it last night!!!! I think central theme in this movie affected me quite deeply because I haven’t stopped thinking about it
Same I feel you ❤️
The best way for me to describe this movie is it’s surreal in the way I wanted I’m Thinking of Ending Things to be
You didn’t think that I’m thinking of Ending Things was surreal?
Phoenix is always the best! This sounds like it is right up my alley. Your previous recommendations have been spot on for me for “ different” films, so I’ll definitely give this a watch. Thanks for your honesty and clarity in all your reviews! ❤️
I saw it Friday, and if nothing else you can definitely say this movie is an experience. I’m really thankful to have seen it on a big screen - I’m not sure it would be the same experience watching it at home. If someone has an interest in movies that are “out there” and not so much a reflection of normal reality, I would definitely recommend Beau.
Sending love to everyone in the UK cus we have to wait until 19th May 😭😭 I’m so hyped
Sorry to hear about this, that’s so sucky
i’m about to see this movie tomorrow i am SO excited !!! this was uploaded in perfect timing for me 😭
Waiting for the it on bluray so I can rent it at redbox 😊
I love that you said your favorite Todd Solondz film is Palindromes. You don’t hear that a lot, and it is one of my all-time favorites.
Watched this one last night at the Astor (appropriate). Given I read a possibility that it might have been slightly censored in Australia, I'm really hoping that was the uncut version I saw (and you as well).
I agree it is certainly bizarre, allegorical at times, quite well-acted and strangely relatable throughout. The subtle humor contrasted with the mania and compelling performances was right up my alley. Hovering between an 8 and 9; I need to watch it again.
This film gave me so much anxiety on the drive home. Not in the theatre. Never experienced that with any other film. The most shocking reaction I’ve gotten out of Aris three features. Loved it
Yea I feel this, I haven’t stopped thinking about it
I am beyond excited to see this in the cinemas. What an amazing review, got me even more hyped haha I am so glad you liked it!
Wow, I´m am so excited to see this film when it comes to the cinema in Sweden next week! I don't know what to expect, other than I probably will be surprised. Thanks for a great review. So glad you finally got to see it, Emma! :)
I love the format you use. Even if I have no desire to see the film, it is a pleasure watching you review movies.
Thank you so much!
I'm so pumped for this movie......going to see this on Saturday in gold class
Happy Thursday 💋🩷👼🏻🌻
Fantastic review! I personally loved this film and how ambitious Aster went with it. Phoenix was so amazing as was the supporting cast, and a lot more disturbing than I planned. It was like a PT Anderson epic mixed with his Hereditary
Just watched this film tonight on Paramount+ and was gobsmacked with its daring and originality. The way it stayed true to the POV of Beau throughout the entire film. It gives the viewer a glimpse into what it's like to live with extreme anxiety, guilt, mommy issues and social awkwardness. Everything is seen through the perception of Beau and Phoenix does masterful job. And like you i was also struck with sadness at the end when the people were filing out and the camera just held that last shot during the credits with no music. There was a sad finality to it all.
I didn't think I'd love anything as much as Skinamarink but Beau is Afraid has now become my favorite movie of the year. Ari Aster just continues to amaze me. I loved Hereditary and Midsommar, but his latest effort might have just topped both movies for me. I can't wait to see where he goes from here.
There were certain moments that had me and our audience hollering. What a wild ride.
I always struggle to keep my focus when watching movies, but this one got my attention from the first minute to the last second. I watched it yesterday and still need to proceed what I got from it, but it definitely didn't disappoint me!
Hi Emma, I, too, love Todd Solondz. Great review, as always, I am a huge admirer of Ari Aster, and just the cast alone gave me goosebumps! I can't wait to watch this. Thanks for the outline, I studied film at University and have seen every genre imaginable!!lol😂. I'm a huge horror fan. I always find myself agreeing with you.
Side note: I absolutely love your fringe and your hair!!. Gorgeous.
Best wishes from Ireland ❤.
Palindromes is my favourite solondz film too. I definitely connected with this movie [Beau is Afraid] on the same level you did here. I loved it so much. Great review as usual. 😎🤟🔥💖
Thank you!
My partner and I would love you see a spoiler-full video on this one! So much to talk about!!
3 hours? A movie really has to be good to support that length.
Based on your review, I am going to see this movie, but I have to see it in the theater, so I will not be tempted to be distracted by phones etc.
Thank you for the video.
I've always wondered where your man/person going with you to the cinema goes when you record these in the car 😂 in my mind they just awkwardly stand there for like an hour or however long it takes to record. Please can you tell me cause it's been on my mind for the past few months and I really gotta know, do they stand there, do they go get something to drink/eat, TELL ME EMMA 😭😂
Also great review, can't wait to watch this when it releases in South-Africa, love Ari's work and I love weird surreal stuff so I'm pretty hyped!
I went to the movies by myself :)
Great review! Definitely gonna check this one out!
I cannot wait to see this. Thanks, Emma!
I am very excited to see this movie. Great review Emma!
Emma you're a legend.
Always appreciate your views!! Very much looking forward to seeing this one!
I always appreciate the spoiler free reviews but i am DYING to know all your spoiler thoughts! just saying i’d watch a part 2 to this video lol
haha yeah i thought about it... but its a film that i really dont like the idea of picking apart too much, more reflecting on it as a whole. When i see it again i might do one for the patreon.
I went to the cinema alone (as usual) today and sadly used alcohol to cope, so took a few wee breaks... but didn't suffer narrative wise... holy HELL... incredible. I think Ari has probably isolated himself ala Lars Von Trier. This is DARK(ly funny) and deeply nightmarish. I thought it was awesome, but only because it pushed me in ways I have never been pushed before... I don't need tasteless directors to start trying to do this... Noe, Trier, Cronenberg, yes fine... this can't become a trend.
This reminded me a lot of his short film the strange thing about the Johnsons, been 2 days since I’ve seen it now and it’s still lingering in my mind.
Really refreshing review on this film, great work.
I went and watched this movie today mostly because of this review (and because it's Ari Aster). My goodness, what a ride that was! As someone with GAD, I appreciated the warning that this would raise my anxiety. I chose to go, but was well prepared for that, and very glad I was. I also agree this is not a film for everyone (I've already warned 2 people I know off it despite absolutely LOVING the film). I also wish I had been able to take a picture of the looks on the other movie-goers faces as I was leaving the theater because they looked like they had really *seen* some things - lol. Also, no one wanted to leave despite having sat in the seats for 3 hours - it was like everyone was traumatized!
I'm so impressed by how fast you got this video up! Sadly the movie is not showing in any nearby cinemas and i still cant decide if it's worth driving 1.5 hours to see 😅
Yeah i do it all within the same night! Its actually such a fun ritual for me. I see a film by myself Im lucky enough to be able to speak my mind and people listen, so i get all my thoughts out and release it then have the best nights sleep haha. Glad you enjoy these videos thank you
I love Todd Solondz! Recently rewatched Happiness. Still love it. Once on twtter I said Ari Aster was the Todd Solondz of horror. This makes me even more excited!
This is probably a movie that I really need to be in a better (emotional) mindset to see, and not the escapism type movie I need to see! Thankful for your review as always; I'll save this for.... a rainy day?
Yes it’s a great rainy day one !
Absolutely love your spoiler free reviews!!! Thank you so much!!! You rock at what you do 😁🤘
This started out at the anxiety level of the climax of 'Mother' and just went into orbit! 😂
I waited to watch your review until after I’d seen it, and I’m truly not the same person I was when I walked in that theater. I’ve been so out of it since seeing the film, and it hasn’t left my brain. I wasn’t really scared while watching, just tense, but now, I’m scared. I’m anxious. I don’t know why that film twisted me in the way it did
Saludos desde Acapulco México
Wasn’t sure about this film but now I’m sold.
Thank you for spoiler free reviews
Stay open! It’s probably not what you’re expecting at all . I hope you like it
Can’t wait to see this! It’s my most anticipated film of the year!
The way your face is lit in your car reminds me of scream. If that wasn't intentional, it looks cool lol
The vibe of your videos , chefs kiss , then my high from my herbs kick in … you are amazingly spooky….
hahah thank you! dont watch this one on herbs... at least the first time.
I’m glad you seemed to love it as much as I did. That said - any spoiler free discussion of this film isn’t really going to be a good discussion of the film, since it’s so dense with layers of nonstop content from beginning to end… I really would love to hear an ACTUAL discussion of the film. Sadly I guess I’ll have to wait bc people don’t like “spoilers.”
Do you like spoilers?
I was lucky enough to be able to go catch this Sunday. I went to my local theater and did a double feature with evil Dead rise. This film is being torn apart by critics and audiences alike, but I really enjoyed it. I love Ari aster's films. This one is quite different than anything he's put out before. Joaquin Phoenix is amazing as usual. And I love how the film just builds on your anxiety. It did drag a bit toward the end. I found myself getting rather bored, kind of wishing it would just hurry up and wrap up. I have a tiny little bladder, and I usually have to run to the bathroom all the time, but I actually made it through this one all in one sitting. Great movie. I just have a hard time describing it to people. How the hell do you tell someone about a movie like this?
Watching this now 😊
Thank you for the non-spoiler review, Emma! ❤❤❤
anytime!
So glad you do spoiler-free reviews, or give as a huge warning ahead of time if you include them.
YahooNews ran a story that I thought was just talking about their filming style, and gave a HUGE spoiler - basically ruined it for me. Not even sure I will watch it now.
Oh boy …this is gonna be one hell of a ride I assume!,, thanks for spending the time to share your thoughts.. love your page..
I'm so excited to watch this. It won't be in the cinema. Lol. But yes, excited nonetheless. Thanks Em as always for your great spoiler free review!
I hope you love it!
As soon as you refrenced Todd Solonz I was sold!
Looking forward to seeing this film!
Loved the review, can't wait to see the movie.
Also love that it looks like your head is floating because your clothes and everything around you are black. 😂
Thanks. I'll check it out
I haven't seen Palindromes(2004) yet, but I have seen Mother(2017).
I'm not sure why it gets such a low rating.
I have seen Midsomar and Herditry and they are in my top 10 A24 films along
with The Whale, The Florida Project, and EEAAO, so I am very excited about Beau is Afraid.
Emma, I did watch The Handmaiden(2016) by your recommendation. Loved it.
So a big thank you is in order.
Going to see Evil Dead tomorrow.
My friend, whose a writer, saw it and said it was overall good with brilliant moments and very funny.
After a somewhat restless Hereditary and Midsommar audience, I was surprised to sit in a dead silent theater during Beau is Afraid.
I'm one of the people that this movie wasn't for. My main gripe with it is that it's way too long. I personally believe the entire forest part - although visually very nice - could have been left out and we wouldn't have missed it.
I did like the first part of the movie, though, and maybe the rest of the movie will grow on me eventually (like Midsommar did).
I'd love to see you do a Ari Aster short film ranking/deep dive. Thanks for all the great content!
I guess now i can since theres 3 and a BUNCH of shorts!
@@spookyastronautsYes!! There's some gems for sure, most are available on UA-cam and Vimeo!!
We loved it so much! What a wild ride!
Where did you get the music you play when arriving at the theater? I found it relaxing and it made me wanna sing
You should wear black in your car more often, your head and hands natural effect in this vid is a vibe. I almost thought you edited it that way.. great breakdown, can’t wait to see the movie.
I'm still unsure how much I want to see this... I mean I loved Hereditary and then felt disappointed with Midsommar (although I'd probably enjoy it a lot more on a second viewing without expectations!). This one I just can't figure out if it's definitely for me. But I'm so intrigued honestly! The originality score is definitely keeping this on my watchlist. Will I make it to a theatre to see this though? Doubt it if it's 3 bloody hours XD
I think you sold me. I'm checking it out. Good reviews
Today is my birthday and I'm celebrating it with a double feature. I'm about to see Evil Dead Rise and then tonight I will go see Beau is Afraid. I'm very excited!
Happy birthday! Haven't seen Beau is Afraid yet but pretty sure these two will make a good double feature
Aster definitely considers Midsommar to be at least somewhat of a comedy.
“It’s folk horror, but it’s being given to you with the trajectory of a high-school comedy.”
He's also stated that he found it amusing that during screenings half the theater would laugh while the other half was trying to figure out what was wrong with the people who were laughing.
Hype to check this video out still at work, this is an early comment for Al!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼❤️
Late to this video, but I had to mention that this movie is actually based on one of Ari Aster's short films (the short is entitled "Beau" and Beau is portrayed by the actor who played the father in "The Strange Thing About the Johnsons"!!!!).
Evil dead rise trailer has made me hype
Good review and cool video Emma!👉😃👈
Great review, you make me want to see this movie.
really looking forward to see this one and from what you've said it feels something right for me. I am just wondering - as person with anxiety disorder myself - how am I going to experience this movie? I guess I will find out. Thanks as usual for your thoughtful and respectful review. Muah!💋
So far I heard people in general has 2 reactions. They hate and want to leave ASAP the theater . Specially after second hour . Or they love it .
I have anxiety but I genuinely like torturing myself in films 🤣. Depends how you feel about films that purposefully try to get a reaction - like funny games, speak no evil or mother!
@@spookyastronauts in my case , i think I Pass .
It appears having some interesting and funny moments. But some weird and nasty ones as well .
Yaaas vague Queen, gives nothing and everything at the same time 😂😂excited for this one 😊
It’s so crazy, when I first saw this film in the theaters I had mixed emotions about it. I had such a more enjoyable experience on the second watch in my living room with a great sound system and felt more immersed in the film and really loved it. I highly suggest anyone who was unsure on the first watch to give it a second chance at home with full sound on the biggest tv possible
Thanks for the review, Emma. I'm starting to sense that Ari Aster may be the horror equivalent to Terence Malick or Wes Anderson. Does that make any sense?
I really liked this movie. It's something very unique among a rather standard catalog that current mainstream cinema offers. Fresh and disturbing. And yet, I can perfectly understand that there are people who hate it completely. My personal advice is to watch it, the worst that can happen is that you lose 3 hours, the best would be a unique experience, with emotions that are hard to find elsewhere.
So excited to catch this! Am trying to convince my beau to go see it with me but it may not happen as soon as I'd like. Thanks for everything you do. As always, loving the content. Off to see Evil Dead Rise this weekend though, and I'm very excited for how fun that might be.
I went to Beau alone! Don’t wait ;)
Thank you for another great review!
Thank you
Can’t wait to watch it
Just the crazy paint scene, alone is worth the price of admission.
i'm sooo excited to watch this
So stoked! Going tomorrow!!! 🎉
Enjoy!!!
@@spookyastronauts you have no idea how nice it is to be able to trust that I could watch this video and have no spoilers! I haven't seen the trailer. My friend made me listen to Supertramp, because the song seemed integral to the trailer, and I didn't even want that clue. I knew the song already, so it wasn't the worst clue. 😂 I love Todd Solanz(I know that spelling has to be wrong, but I've seen all his films so I'm just gonna role with it.) And I appreciate you so much, Emma. If you haven't seen Paint, I recommend it. Not horror, but one of the most daringly artistic satires I've seen in a long time. It's also not for everybody, but me and my significant laughed the entire 90 minute runtime(which may be just a nice break after 3 hours, and who are we kidding, 6 hours of an Ari Aster bop). Much love as always, and you rock! I'm also seeing Evil Dead Rise this weekend... But after Beau. 🥂
The main reason I watch your reviews is to watch you wave goodbye to your dog...cute!
I've been so excited for this since I seen the trailer but it looks like we won't be getting an Irish release 😭
I keep returning to "Kafkaesque" as a descriptor for this film.
Seeing it this Sunday. 👀
I am so happy I got to watch this in theaters even if a little late! I think the horrifying thing is that many people have a relationship then can relate this to
Finally watched it last night. Bizarre is right lol but I enjoyed it and can relate to the anxiety aspect. Loved the forest play scene. Very beautiful. 💕
