Vande Bharat Express is a medium-distance superfast express service operated by Indian Railways. It is a reserved, air-conditioned chair car service connecting cities that are less than 800 km (500 mi) apart or take less than ten hours to travel with existing services. The train entered commercial service on 15 February 2019.
The trainsets are self-propelling Electric Multiple Units (EMU)s with eight or sixteen coaches. The trainset was designed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation and is manufactured by Integral Coach Factory in Chennai. Introduced in 2018, the trainsets achieved semi-high speeds of 183 km/h (114 mph) on trials, but the operational speed is limited due to track restrictions, halts and traffic congestion. The maximum operational speed of 160 km/h (99 mph) is achieved by the Rani Kamalapati (Habibganj)-Hazrat Nizamuddin Vande Bharat Express on the Tughlakabad-Agra section.
A new Vande Bharat Express on Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central route has been launched to facilitate commuters on the busy route. This is the second such train on the route. The booking for this train is open at PRS counters and IRCTC website and regular services will commence on March 13. The superfast train covers the more than 500km distance between the two cities in less than 6 hours. It is capable of reaching up to 160 km per hour. The first Vande Bharat Express between the two commercial hubs was launched in September 2022. It will leave Ahmedabad at 6:10 am and arrive at Mumbai Central at 11:35 am. In the return direction, it will depart from Mumbai Central at 3:55 pm and reach Ahmedabad at 9:25 pm. The existing Vande Bharat Express departs from Mumbai Central at 6 am and reaches Gandhinagar at 12.25 pm. In the return journey, the first train leaves Gandhinagar at 2.05 pm and reaches Mumbai Central at 8.25 pm. The superfast train will consist of air-conditioned chair cars and executive chair coaches.
The new Vande Bharat Express will run six days a week (except on Sundays) and halt at Vadodara, Surat, Vapi, and Borivali (in sububran Mumbai) stations in both directions
Timings of the new Vande Bharat Express are such that a person can visit Mumbai from Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Vapi at around the starting time of offices and return on the same day. Long-distance express mail trains on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route is expected to be operating at an increased speed of 160 kilometre per hour (kmph) on the existing Western Railway (WR) line of Mumbai division from March. Confirming the same, Neeraj Verma, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Western Railway’s Mumbai division on Thursday said that major works have been completed, and the speed upgrade is expected to be implemented from March .
“This upgrade will allow long distance trains to run at an increased speed. Initially, only premium trains like Tejas, Shatabdi, and Vande Bharat will be operated at 160 kmph, closer to their potential speeds. Later, other Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB)- coach equipped trains can also benefit from the increased speed upgradation following the success of the system,” he said. The increased speed is expected to reduce travel time by an average of 30 minutes, according to the Western Railway Mumbai division. On an average, from Mumbai division, there are 170 long distance trains running daily, out of which 120 are such long trains having LHB-equipped coaches. Remaining are passenger trains that run at slower speed taking more station stoppages.
Currently, the speed limits for long-distance train services are 100 kmph from Mumbai Central to Borivali, 110 kmph from Borivali to Virar, and 130 kmph from Virar to Ahmedabad. Starting from March, the increased speed limit will apply beyond Virar. To achieve the higher speed, the division is undertaking work in three main areas: track strengthening, upgrading electrical overhead wires and signals, and installing crash barriers to prevent stray animals from entering the railway track area.
