Raised at the meeting of the Itajai -Acu River to the sea , Itajai is located on the north coast of Santa Catarina State in southern Brazil . The Port of Itajaí is the second Brazilian port handling cargo in containers . It is also the largest exporter of frozen meat from Brazil . Historical studies reveal that the vocation for fishing in Itajai Brazil has emerged in the colony , when in 1820 , John VI commanded to bring families of traditional Portuguese fishing town of Ericeira to colonize the coast of Santa Catarina . So Itajaí is known as the fishing capital of Brazil . It houses about 50 manufacturing companies that produce more than one million cans of sardines and tuna per day . Shipowners are 250 and 500 fleet boats which account for 20 % of Brazilian production of fish , estimated at 500 tons per year . Fish production of Itajaí is concentrated in catching tuna , sardines and shrimp . About 15 thousand people working directly and indirectly in the fishing industry in the city .
Itajaí has beautiful beaches surrounded by hills covered by lush subtropical vegetation of the Atlantic Forest . The city invested in tourism . He raised his unique tourist pier in southern Brazil that has customs and therefore allows the docking of international cruise lines ships. São 250 armadores e uma frota 500 barcos que respondem por 20% da produção brasileira de pescados, estimada em 500 mil toneladas ao ano. A produção pesqueira de Itajaí está concentrada na captura do atum, da sardinha e do camarão. Cerca de 15 mil pessoas trabalham direta e indiretamente na indústria da pesca na cidade.
Itajaí tem belas praias cercadas por morros cobertos pela exuberante vegetação subtropical da Mata Atlântica. A cidade ergueu o único píer turístico da região sul do Brasil que possui alfândega e, portanto, permite a atracação de navios de cruzeiros marítimos internacionais.
Itajaí também é uma cidade universitária com seus 23 mil alunos da Universidade do Vale do Itajaí,com mais de 70 cursos superiores.
O município tem duas tradicionais festas. Em outubro, acontece o seu maior evento popular, a Marejada, Festa Portuguesa e do Pescado. O prato típico é a sardinha assada. Tem shows, muita música, danças típicas e manifestações folclóricas, que atraem milhares de visitantes. E em julho, a cidade homenageia o homem do campo e ressalta sua importância para a sociedade com a Festa Nacional do Colono.
