    I do a lot of bunker chunking for stripers. Those gamakatsu’s with the bent eye end up hooking the bass deep all the time. The straight eye hooks like owner and mustad in line circles almost never do. I don’t know if it has something to do with the eye or something else, but i never use the gamas anymore.

    Any tips on casting with braid? I’ve been losing a lot of lures lately. Do you recommend any knots and/or casting methods? Thanks!

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing 3 роки тому

      Palomar knot. Daiwa-JBraid 8 strand behaves well for me.

    • @seanmccarthy1909
      @seanmccarthy1909 3 роки тому +1

      Stephen check your Guides on the rod you may have a chip on the ceramic any nick on them will cut your line like a knife. I’ve lost many lures before I realized what was happening. Hope this helps 🎣

    • @jcarry5214
      @jcarry5214 3 роки тому

      Where is the line breaking? Right where you tie the leader on or farther back? I can never get teh hang of a palomar so I use a modified clinch knot. Twice through the ring then 7-10 twists depending on the weight/brand.
      I always had really good luck with sufix 832 when I lived on the coast. Not as sticky as the daiwa 8 strand I've used and a little thinner for its weight. It's very slippery and knots are unforgiving but as long as you do the extra twists and keep it organized it's good. Lasts a long time. Not as great on the rocks but very good all around.
      If you're using power pro then you're better off just throwing your lures and another thirty bucks in the water, walking home, and trying to untie micro wind knots in a nice dry closet.

      Check your guides for sharp edges or cracks, especially the tip guide! Same thing happened to me, lost a few good plugs before I realized the tip was slicing through the braid like a hot knife through butter. A small crack had somehow developed in what was an old chrome tip on a vintage rod, replaced it with one with a ceramic inner diameter ring.

    Question: Hi John, I'm heading to Nantucket for Labor day week. I giving it my 1st real shot from the surf at Bonito's and False Albacore as well as Stripers and Blues. Would you recommend I use a leader and power clip? If so what are your recommendations? Or is it ok, just to use the braid to lure. I'm using a 9ft St. Croix Triumph Travel rod and Penn Slammer III 4500 with 20 lbs. Power Pro V2. I'm so stoked for this trip!!! I appreciate any feedback

    • @ajfogertyfan8245
      @ajfogertyfan8245 3 роки тому +1

      I tried using braid right to my plugs (via a swivel) when I first switched from mono to braid, after about three casts in the surf I got tired of untangling the braid from the hooks on the plugs, it’s amazing how many knots braid can tie itself into around hooks. I always use a nominal 3 foot leader with tactical clips like John has described in many of his videos. With the leader, if hook tangles do happen in the surf, they are easily undone.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing 3 роки тому +2

      For albies no clip. I have about a 3-foot leader of 20# seaguar fluoro joined to the braid through a small stainless barrel swivel, like a 100# tsunami stainless, then tie the leader direct to the jig. For bass and blues 50# leader and a clip are fine.

  • @jobino511
    @jobino511 3 роки тому

    Hi John, nice catch. I've been using offshore angler fluorocarbon made by seaguar, it's about half the price of the blue label by seaguar. Wondering if you have an opinion on the quality difference, understanding ofcourse, you may not have used the product, maybe you know someone who has tried it? So far no issues with it.
