In Reba’s original version she delivered a song beautifully. In this duet, Reba and Kelly delivered a powerhouse performance in front of a live audience. That’s the real difference. They aren’t meant to be the same.
You guys should really listen to Kelly on her own to experience what she can do. She was holding back on this one. Try listening to the song Meaning of life (the Nashville sessions version) to hear Kelly at full power. She is one of the best, if not the best singer out there today.
Kelly sounds so young here; check out her performance of "Fancy" from the Kennedy Center Honors, because she was much stronger in her delivery!

Reba and Kelly toured together once and I caught them in Baltimore. They sang their own songs, each other's songs, then duets throughout the show and I loved every minute of it. Their friendship comes through in everything they do together.

What I love about Reba is that there is no doubt it is her singing by the end of the first word. Very few singers have that rare vocal sound. Others may sound as good, arguably better, but Reba is probably the most original vocalist I have ever heard.
Some are like that. Elton John. Whitney Houston. Dolly. Robert Plant. The list goes on. Voices and styles so distinctive that you know it's them from the first word. - Keith

A distant cousin of mine, Bobbi Gentry was her stage name, her birth name was Roberta Streeter.

Give Kelly and Jake Hoot's duet, "I Would've Loved You," a listen. He was on her team on The Voice a few years ago and won. He's country and she matches his country sound in that song. Powerful vocals from both of them! Her voice has matured over the years and has a smokey sound she didn't have when she was younger. But there's really nothing she can't sing!

Having seen both of these amazing women in concert I have to say you are correct Keith, they both have similar singing tool bags. BUT, I will say Kelly can cross ANY genre (check out her Kellyoke she does for her show) where Reba has a very distinct country sound.

I looooooove me some Reba. But when Kelly is on her game, Reba can’t even carry Kelly’s tool bag. Hypothetically, Rebaoke wouldn’t even hold a candle to Kellyoke.
@@bigwaylon agreed - Reba has a great presence but she doesn't have the range or depth to her voice...and as she has aged her voice has become thinner (not criticizing just observation).
@@BourbonCountryReacts - Not really. She can’t loose her accent enough to sound anything but country. I love Reba bit there is a reason she sticks with the same music. Kelly can change her voice up and sing anything. Kelly always held back when she sang with Reba as she didn’t want to be louder than her idol and also her mother in law at the time.

I would love to see you guys react to a more recent Kelly Clarkson performance. She was still a baby in this one, at the beginning of her career. Her voice has only improved, as has her confidence. I think you'd like Whole Lotta Woman, the live version from the Billboard Music awards. (her lives are always better than the album versions)
Kelly Clarkson 2018 and 2019 Billboards Awards Intro are amazing to watch as well as her 2021 Christmas Special with Brett Eldredge, Ariana Grande and Leslie Odom are incredible as well as Blessed on Jimmy Fallon show just gives you chills its so good.
Its like the unicorn of music, most music is so overproduced that they can't make it sound the same live.

Reba is in a league all by herself but if anyone comes close to her it’s KELLY. Born and raised in southern WV down in Wyoming co. Coal miner family here. Married a marine E-8 Master Sargent he did 20+ years retired. Been a little everywhere but currently live in Crosby Tx. But enjoy your references about some of our life’s and how we grew up back in the hills. Never forget those back home roots.

This clip (as well as the clip of Because of You) comes from an episode of a show called CMT: Crossroads, which Reba and Kelly filmed about 5 years after Kelly's Idol win.
Kelly has said (on various occasions) that was she very nervous while filming this because it was the first time she was getting to work with Reba (outside of a performance of Does He Love You that they did on Idol, when the top 5 finalists got to sing with one of their idols), who she grew up idolizing.

Kelly is being respectful and playing to and following Rebas lead. She admires and respects her artistry. Also, it is live and you know that these days it's hard to find people who can knock it out of the park every time, even live.

INFO DUMP: Your videos with Reba and Kelly are from their '07 CMT Crossroads tour, were they sing each other's songs. Kelly won Idol in '02 and now has her on daytime talk show we're she sings live "Kellyoke" at the start of every show. Kelly also hosted the Billbard Music Awards in '18/'19/'20. Her opening numbers are amazing and you won't regret watching them.

I agree with you about the split in two. But, I've always taken this song as an inspiration. She was as low as person could be. But, she reached the highest she could go. And Reba, and Kelly's, delivery of the song was saying EXACTLY how high and above all that, that she had gotten.

Great review gentleman but I do have a different opinion regarding one thing just one of you gentlemen stated. and I can’t drink bourbon, Tennessee whiskey or any liquor’s anymore because of my medications. To suggest that Reba (sing/performer per Reba herself) and Kelly (singer and songwriter) doesn’t know exactly what this iconic song written by the legend Bobbie Gentry (singer, songwriter, *composer and *producer) is all about plus they understand the nuances of every single word. They were completely enjoying themselves because it’s not like it’s the first time the song had been performed/sung and the chances were likely 99.8 percent that it wouldn’t have been the first time people in the audience had heard the song lyrics. They did it exactly how two professionals would handle it, they made it sound amazing, made sure every single word could be heard and understood. Since it was a CMT CrossRoads Concert Series that was also being broadcasted live, so I’m sure they had gone through every song that they chose and planned to preform so the live audience both in studio and at home got the best show possible.
P.S. Please forgive all my grammatical errors and my nonsensical comments at times because I have “MS” which causes blurry/double vision along with many other side effects. Not looking for pity or sympathy just sorry if my comment makes no sense,I don’t comment very much anymore because my darling family tell me sometimes I come across this short or harsh and I was actually a good writer minored in literature but my mind just can’t seem to hold onto thoughts or I go on and on (like I’m ranting but about nothing) with sentences that run on as well. I’m tremendously grateful because I have my amazing husband, our two grown children who are both married and each have given us a precious granddaughter with more on the way. I can’t complain because I’m so blessed, like in the country my grandchildren are going to private Christian Academies with the old in three advanced classes. Ivy leagues and top universities and colleges are seeking out children homeschooled or private academies. That should tell you how bad the public school system truly is and they haven’t said but I don’t think many children coming out of public schools are actually educated. They’ve made a mess and we’ve got to get these radicals out of Washington. We’re conservative Republicans but I can remember when I had family that were Democrats and you could have decent conversation but that’s all gone and I don’t know anyone that calls themselves a Democrat because it’s now the liberal/leftists party.

This looks like it was right after Kelly won American Idol. If so she was about 18 or 19 years old.
I like this version - but actually agree with your assessment. Reba's voice alone gives it the more authentic feel. But she and Kelly have a very close connection - and were family for a while. There is another song that I would love to see a reaction to. It's a remake of the CW McCall song - Convoy. Canadian country artist Paul Brandt does a great cover version of it. The official video is a lot of fun - and really funny too. He uses a few other Canadian artists for the truck drivers - and the police. Nothing to serious - just a really fun remake.

No it’s not a big thing to say. Everyone knows Reba has vocals that are unique as well as powerful but to say that Kelly’s aren’t quite as strong as Rebas would be ludicrous. Kelly is a powerhouse when it comes to vocals. Thats just the facts.
So, maybe do Pam Tillis. She is Mel Tillis' daughter. Spilled perfume or Don't tell me what to do will give you an idea of her vocals. Maybe it was Memphis is really good to.
That was a great toe tapping time. Two vocals that blow most everyone else out of the water. Had Martina been part of that, it couldn't have gotten any better.

Although I am unlikely to be a booze briber I do enjoy providing a bit of background on these country songs and the interaction with you guys so I am not so much making requests but rather suggestions for your interest in classic country songs. That being said, and along the lines of your being a guitarist yourself, the song 'Play Guitar Play' by Conway Twitty is a good one. Also 'Guitar Man' by Jerry Reed. Another would be 'Working Man's Blues'' by Merle Haggard who was a very fine picker himself.

I've said for a long time, only Reba could take a song about a girl basically being forced into prostitution and make it a top ten hit on mainstream country radio.
This was Reba introducing Kelly to the country music audience. I prefer Reba's "Fancy" far and away better than Kelly. But again, when they did this one, it was done to introduce Kelly to country music's audience. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just not a Kelly Clarkson fan. The bourbon without that smooth burn ain't worth drinkin' to me. I'm a bourbon snob.
We're pretty snobby too. And both of us tend to prefer barrel proofs, sacrificing smoothness for flavor. But, sometimes, a smooth bourbon hits the spot. And honestly, this stuff is really good, even though it's nowhere near barrel proof. - Keith

I love Kelly's voice. But a guess on my part is that she doesn't have Reba's range. She didn't go down to the lowest notes at all on this song - went back up. We know Reba can hit way high, so thinking they couldn't move the key to where Kelly could get both the highest and the lowest. Just a guess.

The real strength of this song is in Reba's ability to deliver an emotion because you're right it's a terrible terrible song as far as what happens to a poor young child. And in the original song Fancy was 16 not 18. But Reba has this extraordinary gift for pushing emotion through for making things that are horrible beautiful enough that people will listen to it. And then gas and shock when they realize what's going on. It's not a kind or pretty message but unfortunately it's a reality a whole lot of people have had to face. And I think that if it touches just one of them and makes them realize that there is life out there that does not involve that kind of ugliness and that they they've had the strength to get through the ugliness they'll have the strength to get forward in other ways then it's done its job. Interestingly enough Rita gets accused of having a Texas accent all the time and it's not rebus from Oklahoma Kelly on the other hand is from Joshua Texas which is just about 10 miles 15 miles outside of Dallas-Fort Worth. And going by the hair color this was the concert tour just after Kelly won American idol and went out to open for Reba and Reba took a liking to her and at that point in time I don't think Kelly had the maturity to deliver the kind of pathos and emotion that fancy requires whereas Reba's the more mature singer and she's been through a whole lot in her life and she does. I think that's where that dichotomy that Dustin was discussing was coming from it has everything to do with experience and time on stage. Good job guys and Dustin glad you didn't die.

Close to equal but Reba still beats Kelly. Kelly has to much vibration when she goes all in when Reba doesn’t.
