I think the M3's flared arches make it look like a much angrier car, which I really like
m3 is less expensive, more practical, just as fast, looks 90% as good.. There's also just something about a well balanced fast sedan that speaks to me.
im always prefer coupes over sedans but in this case m3 looks better, m4 looks a bit weird from side angles, the rear window is just oversized

It's funny on the UK second hand car market, the m4 (both coupe & convertible) is less expensive and m3 costs more

M3 around the Track is indeed Faster, B Pillar makes it the chassis that Much Stiffer, and Honestly since they came out i always Preferred the M3 which can Be arguable The Best Manual Sport Sedan Today, M4 though will never be the Best Sport Coupe, it will always lose to the 911

+Talon276 There shouldn't even be a 4 door sports car. Are you taking your family to the track? Porshe 911, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bugatti, Audi R8, Nissan GTR, the list goes, no serious sports car is made in a 4 door version. Get an M3 minivan if you want to take your daughter to soccer practice.

Red (Sakhir Orange) exterior with Red interior on this M3? It's a rolling bordello! This M3 owner, while looking like a very gentle gentleman, has some wild taste on automobile colors. Kudos for him! :-)
During an interview, a M division engineer mentioned that the M4 coupe body is not as aerodynamically efficient (the fastback like roof line is not optimal) as the sedan counterpart, so they had to design the built in trunk lid spoiler to combat turbulence and aid high speed stability. Chassis rigidity and side impact performance is also compromised due to B pillar location. The m4 is slightly lighter to the m3 sedan because of the carbon trunk lid. So officially the coupe is only for show.
I’ve always preferred the coupe with previous m3’s, but with the f80 I think the saloon look a lot better.
Love the more aggressive wider look to the rear on the saloon rather then the sleek coupe.
One additional difference between the M3 and M4 is that the M4 has pillarless doors, which I really like.
its tough. i like the sleek design of the m4, but the flared arches look really good on the m3

if i would buy any of these i'd take the m3 because of the practicality and in my opinion, it looks slightly better.

I have an E46 M Coupe and as much as I love the looks of it, I wish it came with 4 doors. The F80 M3 looks better because of its boxy look which makes it look more aggressive than the M4 and let's not forget the jaw dropping bulge on the rear fender of the M3. The M4 is aggressive too, but a little too sleek and not as unique as a 4 door M3.
Having an M4, it's actually quite spacious inside. It's hella cozy once in place. But M3's are more expensive in my country. You'd be happy with any of these if you can except living without rear doors.
Great review. Well done, as always. Having an F80 now, I agree with your comments. M3 vs M4 is a matter of individual tastes and needs. Practicality won for me.

I like the m4 slightly better but I wish they would of made it more slim so they could have widened the fenders like on the m3. Anyways great video as usual!

It's the first time I could hear a distinct difference in sound between the 2015 and 2016. Thanks for doing this.
A few points:
According to BMW specs, the M3 is ~50lb heavier than the M4. Not 10lb
Those heated rear seat (part of the executive package, not cold weather package) aren't free in the M3. They cost $300. The executive package is $3200 on the M4 and $3500 on the M3.
Not sure where you got that the M3 performs better than the M4. So far all tests tend to demonstrate that they are practically equal performance wise. On paper though, the M4 has a slight edge due to its 50lb weight advantage, lower center of gravity and lower drag (due to its smaller frontal area).

At first I thought you jumped on the "make exhaust UA-cam videos" bandwagon and I was like oh no, say it ain't so! Glad to see that's not the case.
The M3 looks like a hatchback almost, very 1-Serieish. I'm pretty sure this is due to wide angle lens distortion (see 4:25 for example).
I'm a sedan guy but I think that the M4 looks better all around!
Nick, you need to ditch the chrome kidney grills! F30/F32/F80/F82s look so much cleaner with the black kidney grills, pretty much in any color. Do we need to start a petition?

M3 is much better looking. Thosel wheelarchers are just very cool. Gives the car a nice stance.
M3 all the way. Better looking especially on those beautiful wheels, more practical and even (because of the year) a much nicer, more naturally-aspirated-Porsche-sounding exhaust note.
yeah its like picking between oranges Both of them are good looking cars. its matter of 2 vs 4 doors. I owned a coupe and sedan, if i had to choose i pick a sedan again.

I personally prefer the arches on the M4 and exterior wise its the more sportier and better looking than the boxier M3 sedan. The M3 reminds me of a Golf mark 1 from the rear being so square and how the rear arch sticks out. Whereas the M4 rear arches have a more Aston Martin feel to it which I love.
I would take either of these over my f30 335i. That being said.....nick black kidney grills on the f82 pls. And as far as the f80.... Sakhir orange paint. Love it..... Sakhir orange leather too? Not so much. Nick your choice of interior is tons better. Great video either way. Keep up the great work.

I think the square-ish trunk of the M3 just looks "slow".
The fluid dynamic roofline of the M4 is better fitting for a performance car in my opinion.
If I wanted a practical sportscar, I'd buy an Audi RS6 Avant..screw the M3

Another factor to consider with the larger number of m4 owners is the number itself. Since this is the first generation of the 4 series, the customer might prefer to be apart of this new stage for BMW. Also, since the base 4 series is quite a bit more expensive than a base 3 series, you could imagine how that would add some bias to whom the owner wants to be associated with.
I prefer the M3, it seems more balanced. The doors and the back of the M4 seems too big. IMO... :)

M4 allocations are much much easier to come by, I don't think the demand for the M3 is higher than that of the coupe. Also, not only does the M3 have a cheaper price tag but lease deals are much better due to a higher residual

One question though: Did you damage your M4 front bumper? It looks like it is missing pieces of black plastic at the driver's side and looks scratched at the passenger side. I don't recall you talking about that in your videos so I am curious what happened.

They have updated the sound for 2016. Not only for the LCI of the M3, but also for the M4. I picked up my M3 two month ago, and they told me in Munich, they changed the sound ;)
BTW the M3 looks better ;) At least it is a huge difference compared to the F30. The M4 just looks like another 4 series :-P Without the badge nobody would notice ;)
rippchen0815 the 2016 sounds a lot better in my ears. like a deeper cslE46. Is there a different engine/intake sound in the car as well? The delivery of my 2016 M4 is just weeks away:)
+Jacob Webert It also sounds better inside. But I am not sure. Could also be the HK Soundsystem. My previous test cars didn't have the HK. Sounds kind of v8ish and not as artificial as in the test drives of pre 2016 models.

I'm considering either a new M4 or a used 991/911 (2013?), manual for both. I know the DCTs are faster etc, but I prefer to row my own. Considering you've spent time in both, what are your thoughts, pro & con, do you have a preference?. I don't need the extra space of the M4 although admit it would be welcome.

xcvxcv Well my cousin got his new M3 a few weeks ago here in Germany and the guy at BMW who was in charge of the delivery told him that they created a deeper (does this make sense in english?) sound with more bass. To me it sounds way better than the old one.

+HalloProletariat Yea dude that makes sense :) it also sounds like they've let a higher note appear at the top end of the rev range so it actually changes pitch more the more you accelerate. That bodes well for the M2 :P I don't know if I've missed it but I hadn't seen anything that suggested they were tinkering with the sound on newer models etc

I think it's worth repeating...Wagon>Sedan>Coupe. That M3 looks a million times better than the coupe...even in that great red (orange) color.

No one can say the M3 is better than the M4 or vice versa, because it depends on the person's needs. For a "family" person, sure the M4 may looks better for the "passenger's convenience", but for a single person then the M4 would definitely looks much better. Overall and in my opinion, no 4-door is never ever better than a 2-door. Take it from the, a family person who had both own both types, the 2010 M3 in the past and now the 2015 M4. You can't wrong either way, but is up to your needs to decide which one is better or fits you better.
Except that the M3 is way more complete looking than the M4. For me the M4 looks bloated, the M3 sits wider than the M4 and the center of gravity of the sedans have always been better than the coupe versions. Not to mention that the M3 is actually a bit lighter depending on spec. Family or not, F80 M3 > F82 M4

The difference between the looks is not a big thing for me, although I do like the M3 more. The biggest thing for me is the M3 is more of a all-rounder having the extra two doors which in my world makes it a better car.
Do a comparison between the new C63 and the M4, that'll be interesting.
Nick, do you know the feature on the M4 (and all other two door bmw's) when you pressing the open button on your fob twice, the window will go down after opening the door by itself. Then it is easier to get in when you parking in a tight parking space.
Enjoyed the 911 ownership review. Saved me probably making a mistake. Have you considered reviewing a Cadillac ATS-V ? I'd be curious to hear your comments, especially since owning your M4 for a yr plus.

Wouldn't be more reasonable to say the difference in sound is because one car has a longer exhaust then the others one? Thus affecting resonance?

This is just my own opinion. I love the M3 just because it has 4 door and it's a sedan. As a sports car sedan looks more manly because of its boxy shape.
The E90 and E92 have different part numbers for the rear silencer(couldn't find F80/F82 parts list) due to the different body style - Maybe that is also the case for the F80 and F82 and thus causing a slightly different soundtrack?
One of reason I bought my M4 was couple, they are not built to carry people but deliver passion to driver. My opinion.~~

I had no idea the M3 was even made in a sedan model. The M4 just looks smoother and the rear looks more aggressive. M4 has my vote. I hate the M3 bulging rear wheel fenders, looks like a aftermarket work-around to fit bigger tires. Not for me.
