    All I can think about is how often these tropes appear in Dr Who. Especially classic.

    Thank you for this video 👍 I am currently working on a Sci-Fi series and this video came in handy for knowing what fellow sci-fi readers enjoy in their stories. Awesome content going to subscribe for some more. Cheers man

      Everyone’s going to have their own S tier / category variations. I’d be curious to see a poll on these tropes.
      Mine is a bit different. I’d raise Nanotech and Body modifications to S tier on my list. I’d raise cryosleep, mutants, and artifacts to A tier. I’d drop AI uprising to A tier and I’d drop robots to the verrrrry bottom 😂

    Of these 25 tropes my favourite (in order) are
    Uploaded Consciousness
    First Contact
    Artificial Intelligence
    Robots (if they are sentient)
    Parallel Worlds

      Love it! I wonder if there’s a sci-fi story that has combined all of these. That would be quite the journey haha

    Your videos are great, I'm a huge sci-fi nerd and some of my favorite movies and gameshave inspired me to write a science fiction book, it's early in development and would love to see more videos on different tropes so i can know any bland ones to avoid or some good ones to consider including

      Thanks for the kind words! I would recommend writing about what you yourself find interesting as that way you’ll have the most fun and be most inspired to write, but I will consider making another tropes video in the future!

    What would you say to a post-apocalyptic story in which the apocalypse happened when literal demons appeared on Earth in massive numbers and the takeaway at the end of the story is, "Even in the darkest times, there is always hope," and the central theme has to do with the goodness that exists within humanity?

    • @WordsinTime
      @WordsinTime  Рік тому +4

      I would say that it might not be the most original premise but it has potential. Post-apocalyptic settings can be interesting, and demons can be cool even if they’re usually in fantasy books more so than science fiction. And the message isn’t completely unique but I am personally drawn to stories with a sense of hope/optimism.

    Hi there. Interesting video concept... I think it could be improved if you had included images of examples of the tropes you were talking about as you were discussing them... Also a brief explanation of the categories you have created as the classifications S, A,B C doesn't really mean much... Otherwise, you have given some good examples!

    Overall, I think we agree on many ratings. I'm curious if you (or Barnes & Noble) separate out telepathy/telekinesis from "psychics"? Neither appeals to me on its own, though it depends on the world-building: Babylon 5 took telepathy as a starting point, but then extrapolated the Psi Corps as a means of organizing and controlling telepathic abilities, and developed realistic sociological implications that such abilities could create.
    Speaking of world-building, I *highly* recommend Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4 or PC) if you haven't played it yet. Yes, it's a post-apocalypse... But it's also one of the most fleshed-out and amazing worlds I've ever seen with a huge amount of incredibly affecting story and lore. And it's just a lot of fun to play, too.
    I started (and loved) Detroit: Become Human, but I killed Connor in the first mission and didn't have the heart to continue without him (or reboot and start over yet, though I will).

    • @WordsinTime
      @WordsinTime  2 роки тому +1

      The article didn’t mention telepathy/telekinesis, although perhaps there is some crossover there with mutants. The extrapolation you described sounds pretty interesting!
      I have played Horizon Zero Dawn and while the plot was a bit average, I thought the world building and gameplay were fantastic!
      If you have the time, I hope you get to play through Detroit: Become Human. It’s probably the most invested I’ve ever been in characters in a video game.

      @@WordsinTime Oh, I'll definitely head back. I love that style of interactive narrative, and it seems so well made. Mostly I just get overwhelmed by so many branching options...
      Babylon 5 is amazing, but *very* low budget 90s. It was announced recently that a reboot/reimagining has been greenlit by the CW, and the original creator is involved. So I'll be excited to see it in a few years.

    • @WordsinTime
      @WordsinTime  2 роки тому +2

      @@librarianists I like that style of narrative too. I also really enjoyed Quantic Dream's earlier game Heavy Rain on PS3.
      I feel like sci-fi is a genre that can particularly suffer from having a low budget (unless it's a comedy). I haven't watched the original, but it will be interesting to see how the new series turns out.

    I hate Ancient Astronauts so much, it's possibly my least favourite sci-fi trope as it really isn't a solution to a problem, it's just shifting the problem to a different location! How did these ancient civilizations become successful? Aliens! But... how did they become successful? Or is it aliens all the way down! Bottom tier for me!
