An excellent video of a terrible event that I can recall I was a little girl at school and it shocked me to hear of this .
You are so right we cannot ever be complacent .Those static caravans are good but very close to what can become an enemy .the sea . Your input here is excellent * Oddly enough had just been talking about the flooding in Southern Yorkshire ... Thank you history is to be learned from ..--- Helena

I am one of the survivors and younger brother of Alison Mary Watkins. We were on the roof of our prefab all that night. Fortunately I don't remember it but it affected my parents for the rest of their lives.

My Dad was in the U.S.A.F, attached to the R.A.F, and part of the relief effort to the affected areas. I was born about 3 weeks before the storm at the U.S. military hospital in Sculthorpe. Interesting video recounting and remembering that terrible storm.

David thanks for your kind words. Great to hear from someone directly connected to the storm, the stories of amazing bravery and self-sacrifice by servicemen posted in the region are very moving.

My grandmother died in the flood, she was found two days later in the back garden she did not even make it to the front gate.
I should have drowned along with her but my grandfather managed to get us to safety.
It was dark and very cold and it's my understanding a lot of people never recovered from that night so making the death toll even higher.
A few years later while living in London ( Kensington ) again I found myself walking the streets in the dark and cold having been evicted with my mother from our council flat.
Lots of people got help after the flood I received a street to sleep on, in fact it was a bridge in Chiswick.
I blamed myself for many years for my grandmothers death thinking if I had not been there my grandfather might have been able to save her instead of me.
My childhood was a nightmare and the nightmare started on the night of that flood.
What happened to my grandfather ? he received compensation for the lost of his property and I saw him maybe a hand full of times afterwards.
Both him and my father never gave me a Christmas or birthday present or even a card.
I consider myself a victim of that night even if my name does not appear on any plaques.

Catherineone Thank you so much for sharing your heartfelt and traumatic story. Whilst researching the history of the floods I have come across several families who have endured (and go on enduring) the harsh realities of the 1953 floods. I hope in some very small way, my research and video commemorating the floods can help ensure the tragedies of that night are never repeated again on these shores. Best Wishes, Alex

      Alexander Hall Thank you Alex
What I think might of helped me at the time was if someone had sat down and explained to me that it was not my fault that my grandmother died.
In 1953 when the flood came I was in Jaywick my account of what happened to me that night can be read in the book.
The 1953 Essex Flood Disaster: The People's StoryI am sorry to say in my opinion if the right conditions occurred today in Jaywick it could be flooded again with lost of life.
I am getting old now and I am pleased to be able to put down what happened to me after the flood.
Sometimes I went days without food because my mother lost her money gambling.
That's the reason we got evicted.
Lots of people got help after the flood, 'I got nothing' I went from pillar to post.
Where I live now I can see the sea but it's high up and the sea can never reach me.
Sorry to put it on you like this but I fancied letting some pain out.
      All the best

Catherineone Thank you again for sharing more of your story. A big learning point from the 1953 floods and similar tragedies in the following decades was the need for support for survivors, especially those who had been bereaved. I hope in some small way my video and this comment section has been cathartic.
If ever you want to share further thoughts or reflections on the floods, or any other recent history of the region, feel free to contact me.
      Thanks,
      Alex

I am very interested in this as my parents were affected when I was a child. Unfortunately, I found your quiet voice and the incessant guitar twanging impossible to listen to without blowing a gasket.
