  • This is my first attempt at making a fine gold recovery bowl. The gold from the North Saskatchewan River in northern Alberta Canada is classified as "flour gold". Sometimes it can float on water because of the surface tension of water. I needed a system that will separate the heavy, fine, black sand from the gold as panning was a very tedious process. NIce! Thanks for talking about what changes you made along the way. You're saving us steps in our own development process. Did you end up making another one with a different colored bowl? I've seen people use simple L shaped elbows, and not worry about there being a soft transition for the water inlet. You just need lot of water entering the bowl, it doesn't contribute to a swirling effect having a smooth transition.. Also, if you put your pump inside another container, with holes near the top, the pump will not be sucking in dirt. My thoughts are just those, not criticizing, just offering advice. Thanks for posting the video. Keep em coming. Hope ya find nuggets!! 8)

Hi Todd. I bought a blue bowl. It was worth the money (~$110). It is made of very smooth plastic, when it was new, the water wouldn't even stick to it when it was rinced out. I did made a stand, adjustable on each corner leg to keep it level. The design is similar to "the gold lab". I attached a 110 Volt fan onto the support and dremelled half the blades out the fan to provide a shaker. It is very effective in keeping the gold next to the bottom in the early stages of the separation process. It really speeds things up and would consider it an important modification. If you are separating flour gold, do put a drop of dish soap in so break the surface tension of the water as the gold can easily float and go down in the bucket. I also found that if you have a bypass that you can keep open and circulating, the water delivered to the bowl is consistent. I found that if you didn't have the bypass, the pump pressure would fluctuate and you would get the level set in the bowl (use a sharpie marker), and would leave it unattended and the level would rise and most of the gold would get swept away as it is so fine. I can send pics of the new unit if you would want. Enjoy your build. Robert
