I will never get enough of this song. At 2:13 when he changes the first chord in the progression and then harmonizes "smile" may very possibly be my favorite 5 seconds in all of music. the whole song builds up to that moment and it's just god damn beautiful

This song gives me an incredibly nostalgic feeling...and reminds me of all that I've overcome. When I was strung out on meth.... Elliott Smith's music is the thing that helped save me, and helped me make it through each day. I've been clean for 3 years now. I give myself all the credit for that of course, but I also want to say thank you Elliott.

@@connorhough1393 sorry I'm so late to reply. YES, 100%. I have to be careful with Elliott Smith, I am very empathic and it's not hard for me to get wrapped up in all the emotion he conveys. He is incredible though and one of humanity's greatest gifts.
This was my first exposure to Elliot Smith and I have never had a song make me feel the way this one does, helps me through bouts of depression I’ve had over the past couple months. Thank you Elliot I know you look down on the ones that love you

i really don't know how it took me until last year to discover this album, it's literally everything i could ask for in a piece of music.
I love this man because in the industry he has found his own niche and stuck to it. This guy is a phenomenal artist overall. Figure 8 and the self titled are masterpieces

The first time I heard this song it popped up near the end of my work day going to my last client appointment; it came on after my playlist ended and I had no clue who it was or what I was listening to, but hummed it all throughout the appointment. After on the rainy night drive home I blasted the album down the interstate
Got the CD in 2000 in Broome WA Australia..I used to listen to it on remote tracks in the outback going to Aboriginal Communities for work not sure why I write/share this with you all ...the music was fine with me in tropical/desert dry heat ...feltlike... this is quite unique...unique artist...sound track for me at the time ...I had a life full of adventures ... never listen to it at night under the stars... always when I was driving on dusty roads over dry creek beds open landscape Australian Savannah country not sure how he passed away and why ..I guess LA and city life the past and what else..maybe he should have driven with me as a passenger on them outback roads for awhile ...I hate traffic lights and big cities

It's called word painting, and the instrumental Elliott Smith uses isn't unrelated to the lyrics.
To me i don't think he puts that much thought into his music, it feels very natural maybe the least pretentious artist i know of. Imagining him writing a melody that is a metaphor for the song subject to me feels very out of character rather than just messing around till he found something he liked.
