  • In this Spindle Spotlight I am featuring five different spindles with the familiar Phang shape. True Phang spindles originated and are used by the Ladakh people of India. What's interesting is that this shape of spindle was also a traditional shape of Estonian spindles, and Italian spindles. One reason could be the wider center section acts as the whorl on this simple one piece design and helps balance the spindle. The Goddess style, however, has an hourglass shape and it's rotation time is substantially slower than the other styles. If you are interested in trying spinning with a spinning spoon, this style is perfect!
    Spindle Style Pros:
    Simple/sturdy one piece design
    Good for travel
    Holds a lot of fiber
Easy to find/make (lots of antique and modern versions available-or whittle your own)
Some can be spun suspended as well as supported
    Good for very fine singles
    Spindle Style Cons:
    Slow rotation time
    Weights vary by maker
Does not spin a variety of fibers well
    Easy to under/over twist single
    Not easy/good for plying
