My irrigation pump pulls from a pipeline of ditch water. The installer wouldn't put a filter in line before the pump fearing it could clog up and burn the pump out due to lack of water. Instead, he installed a large screen filter on the outflow side. This was all done almost 20 years ago when I was a young child. I'm now 30 and own a company dealing in irrigation, especially dirty water set ups. My 20 year old system has it's downfalls, but overall works great. Usually twice a season, 6 months, I have to take the pump apart to clean out crawdads and field grass stuck in the impeller. The best feature of my system, that I incorporate into all my jobs, is a waste valve on the end of the filter that is wired in as a zone. Using jumpers in the control box, my filter flushes itself multiple times throughout the zones. The water from the flush is piped with 1.25" polly to a waste water ditch for a hay field. I have 6 actual zones for my lawn, but the timer box shows nine because the filter is flushed every two zones for two minutes. It's such an easy and inexpensive thing to do, yet, I haven't come across any other system that does it. I'd estimate 40% of my calls are due to a clogged screen filter. A lot of people don't have the water rights to "waste" water by doing this but it adds up to very little. It's great for my business, but in actuality, a one minute flush at the end of the program is more than enough for 6 zones in most cases. I charge $600 to add this feature and it's a win for both me and the customer.

That's awesome. Some thought is definitely needed to handle dirty water. That's wild that you have to clean crawdads out! Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I love for other people to hear from professionals that are out there doing it.
