I'm sure that in the history of the railways of Britain, there's never been so many withdrawn locos all together of the same class in one location, like these 60s at Toton. It's sacrilege!
You obviously wasn't around in the early 1960s. I remember seeing hundreds of withdrawn sream engines in three mega sized yards in Glasgow, Edinburgh. Lots of ex-Caledonian stock.
Very strange seeing so many disused 60s, they were practically brand new when I was a kid. Indeed, the last time I visited Toton would have been their open day in 1998 and it seemed like they had plenty of life left in them then. Doesn't seem so long ago! Hopefully some more of them make their way into preservation.
In the U.S.A Locos are rebuilt at shops at HALF THE COST of a NEW LOCO. If Later the 66 are to old to repair in the uk send them back ! they can rebuild them !
@@tomward3656 from what I gather DB refuse to sell them after they sold a few to colas years ago. That then let colas bid and win for the contract for the work DB used them for hence why you rarely see even the DB refurbished 60s out on the mainlines letalone the stored ones
God what a shame, the 60s are only a few decades old and are already languishing in “storage” despite not being that old. And if they are unreliable couldn’t they engine swap them from the tens of 66s in storage. They could also be sold for preservation as atleast they will actually be cared about rather then just scrapped in a few years. We don’t want another class to end up like the 56s
Me personally think should be the other way round, lines of scrap 66,s and most if not all 60,s in service. Such sad sight and huge!, waste of money building the 60 in the first place to just dump em like that. Wonderful planning from so called railway bosses. 🤡
Barring cosmetics, surely some of those will be able to run again? EWS/DB clearly didn’t want them when they inherited them. Shocking waste of traction 👎🏻
I'm not really up with the railway scene nowadays - I was wondering why these locos have been mothballed in this way? Did they just become surplus to requirements, a downturn in traffic or what? I agree that it is indeed a sad sight, those lines of locos look almost endless!
If they did that all you would finish up with is another 66. There's far to many of them as it is. Bring back BRITISH RAILWAYS and good British engineering. The 60 is that good EMD wanted to copy it to sell for themselves.
So sad to see all these class 60s just rotting away. I used to see them going through Caerleon when I worked there. Lovely days 😢

It was like this with steam locos then they disappeared also.
I have a similar scene at Brush Works at Loughborough in March 1995 when they were rolling off the production line, what a difference 20 years makes!
Crazy isn’t it - I think you’ll have the better images there for sure 👍
Just so sad 😓
it was the same when the class 52 westerns were all lined up for their fate, very sad, regarding the 60s go buy one before its too late
What a shameful waste, I really do hope that one day most if not all will be saved.
Agreed - A very sad sight. You’d of thought value could be created and a high number of these loco’s saved. Hopefully it can still happen..
Is it still possible to get this close to them?
Yes albeit they’re closely disappearing into the jungle that is growing around them. 🤯🙈

You’d be correct there - I wouldn’t have minded seeing those though 👍

I’d imagine there will be pressure to replace the 66’s with electric or hybrid solutions in the future.
From what I'm told the 66's are knackered, rattle and vibrate like there's no tomorrow. ExDB drivers hated them.
I live in Illinois. Now might not be the best time to comment favorably on the reliability of US equipment. Constant breakdowns and equipment failure.
If they were DPD sprinter vans in a compound would you want to restore one?
Theyve been there a good 7 years now. Used to take my daughter to Derby velodrome and these were “stored” then. Shame
How many class 60s are in the scrap line. Surely some can be serviced & put back into traffic.
Not sure exactly as I didn’t think to count them until I’d left - There’s probably around 35-40 there.
Couldn't GBRF refurbish them & use them.

I prefer the 60’s also! 💯
Railway boss of the private sector hated all the inherited br traction. Most of these 60 look like the not more since the later 90 early 2000s

Sad state of affairs

Class 66 reliability being so much better than the 60’s seems to be the main reason.
Are any groups preseving any? Too late once cut up.
Wikipedia now says 3 of them
i guess the 60s in oldays it would have the stanier black five
Wy not use their spare parts for rebuilds of early diesels from 1930s-1940s?.
Another shocking waste. Why can't they be re-engineered like GBRf did with the class 56's.
Agreed - Not sure why a similar conversion to the Class 56 to Class 69 isn't possible with these locos..
@@trainsplanes Simple, the EMD engine doesn't fit inside the shell. It did fit inside a 56 so that's what they used.

They can't ALL be beyond saving. Could they be sold to developing countries with weaker rail infrastructures?
To good a loco to see them like this what a waste when they have a more superior pulling power to a class 66
Straight eighter Totton
Thats alot of coke cans sitting right there.
What an absolute waste of money
This is what selling off the railways has brought, the yanks have killed any chance of building locos in this country for ever.
such a waste of motive power they could all Be converter to Bi model freight loco’s or somthing
They weren't as bad as the 56s
wow so many such a waste of resources! 👎
They've clearly been withdrawn for some reason, surplus, unreliable, costly to maintain, too dirty, cannot achieve the required speed etc.
Agreed - It would be good to know why..
@@trainsplanes Simple fact unreliable against the class 66
Basically unreliable.
Nothing a mid life service count have fixed
About time they scrapped the lot and class47/37 spend the scrap money rebuilding the steam fleet
Long live steam horah horah the sooner the better.
What a waste.
