First came across this musical piece watching the Deer Hunter film starring Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken. A stunning film and a stunning piece of music. All these years later it still makes me cry to listen to.
Still coming to listen to this years later. Absolutely beautiful, and gave me the motivation to finally learn this beautiful piece, after years of trying and giving up. Thank you so much for posting this. You have literally changed lives ♥️🕉️🙏🏻
I feel the same way. After lying down my guitar a decade ago, I am inspired to go and learn again-I may be too old at 75 but I don't care. It will be worth it to have that piece with me for the rest of my time.
You sir, have a funny way of coincidentally releasing songs I just find out about! Recuerdos, Un Dia de Noviembre, Capricho, Cavatina, and a couple more I'm sure. I only recently have had the pleasure of seeing the John Williams documentary... what an inspiration. So beautifully played here, thank you!!
My Dear Bolton, i get very emotional with this because my father was a professor of classical (the professor of the great young guitarist victor castro) now my father lost his wife- my mom and with 86 he is in a very nostalgic space, living with my both sisters around his grandsons and granddaughters, but he became beyond sad, his name is carlos batista avila and he has some videos here on YT, watching you remind me of him, he still plays he just don't have that flame and motivation anymore, he keeps speaking about "her beloved princess"
I am so sorry for your fathers and your familys sad loss but I hope that your fathers love of the guitar will help him to eventually remember the happier times that he spent with his wife.
What a piece of music this is and beautifully played by a maestro. I can see you playing at some point the movie theme from Schindlers list, a wonderful addition to to your site repertoire I’m sure!
@@boltonguitarstudio3115 The film is indeed very sad and very poignant as it’s based on a true story. The main theme although written for violin will transcribe very well for guitar.
In actual fact the music was originaly written for a short film called ' The Walking Stick ' in 1970 but then became popular after the release in 1978 of the film ' The Deer Hunter ' .
@@boltonguitarstudio3115 Hello Simon I didn’t know that this piece of music had a previous life. It just goes to show that music in some ways must have some kind of context and connect to be truly meaningful to the listener.
Thank you so much for your encouragement. Have been trying to play this piece on and off since 2015 and still at it. Your explanations cover some important points, which give lovely results, and which aren't covered in any other videos I've watched.
Thank you for your kind comments. It is technically a challenging piece and demands a high level of skill, so you will need to focus on the bars that are causingb tha problems and possibly practice some studies by Sor Aguado, Tarrega etc to improve your playing technic in these areas. Keep at it - enjoy.😀
Incredible! Simon, I once heard someone say, this is one of the most, If not 'the' most challenging Classical pieces to learn, would you agree? The way you play it is just breath taking!
I would'nt say its the most challenging but it is certainly difficult for the left hand. I personally feel that the suites by J.S.Bach are far more challenging to the player and also Bach's ' Chaconne ' the piece that really fired me up to play classical guitar when about 12years old.
@@stevew585 Check out Segovias early recording of the Chaconne in Dm - I still think its the best version of this long piece. Thats the recording I bought back in the early 60s which I still have.
Sorry I dont know you name...But I love the music of John Williams Back then when we listened to records before the internet I had one of Williams records which had him playing Cavatina But he played a version of the Beatles ... Fool on the hill I was wondering if you had heard that record and if you did do you play it. I would love to hear your rendition. I love guitar and I always appreciate a good player no matter what grade the are at.. Regards.......

It certainly looks a tough one! Some of those shape changes in tempo. I’ve no idea how mr williams gets to them in tempo and with such clarity. I’m not a huge fan of his playing but on this track he sounds incredible and worthy of his awards
Mason Williams I believe was a script writer and guitarist for an US comedy show back in the 60's, . He wrote ' Classical Gas ' that became a world wide hit. There are two John Williams who are prominent in the music world . The Australian guitarist and the US composer of film music [ Star Wars, ET, Jaws etc] .
Yes its a deceptive piece. Many people wish to play it because it sound easy to play until they try it. It's very difficult on the left hand with many awkward chords, The original version was actually two guitars and orchestra. ua-cam.com/video/izNxtsC1b4k/v-deo.html
No the original version was written by Stanely Myers for a film called ' the Walking Stick' in 1970 and was played by the classical guitarist John Williams. It later become more popular when used for the Robert DeNero film ' The Deer Hunter'. The version I play is a solo arrangement by John Williams and is very popular with finger style guitarists.
If your only starting out I would suggest you try an easier piece such as 'Lagrima' or Spanish Romance. ' Cavatina is a very difficult piece to play and will get harder as you go further into the piece.
I am from India..I just came back from the face of death along with my mother and father and little brother...we were the fortunate ones who survived... but many didn’t ...the second wave COVID was not the only culprit but the sheer lack of planning and the crumbling health and economic infrastructure was the main reason...anyways...every where I go...I see death...I call up a friend and there is news of death...I go to the local grocery store ...and the man behind the counter is no more...his teenage son now has to bear the burden of the loss of his parents but still continuing to serve at the store...but the weather is fine..contrastingly...there is flowers blooming everywhere...the air is quite breezy....so much contrast....at one hand India is facing its blackest May but on the other hand the season seems like spring....this tune perfectly captures that pain and agony....as if mourning for the dead and yet celebrating the ones who survived... and giving them hope....
I have been playing it and teaching it for over 40 yrs so I think I know it by now [ just about ]. Just keep practicing it and I am sure you will be able to play it eventually, but it's not easy.
I play a Jose Ramirez Concert 1a made in 2000 on ' Cavatina ' . I also use 1a made in 1976 with a 664mm scale length on some of my other videos. I also own two other Ramirez guitars a 1970 and a 1994 flamenco.
What effing moron dislikes this? This is the man that wrote it and possibly Williams plays it a tad more fluently but he did NOT write it. This is not easy to play and Stanley does it justice. He should be living in a mansion with fine wine, cars and young ladies like many of the more renowned but less talented artists we have endured over the years. He has as much talent as they do! Great playing Stan and this song is a body of work; the equivalent to writing Sgt. Pepper.
