    What can I say? Or more like, where do I begin? If anyone could have watched me listening to this, they would have seen an "old man" (me!) with his mouth open in awe, and tears in his eyes from emotion. I don't know whether I was more struck by just how beautiful this song was or by hearing such incredible musicianship from these young people. Hands down, this restores my faith in young people. I don't want jazz to ever die, and with the likes of these incredible musicians, it never will. So nice to connect on UA-cam with other people who are as passionate about jazz as I am.

    We have no reason to worry about the future of Jazz, if we have young aspiring musicians like Martha. I just hope there would be more programs similar to SAJB, where kids of very different ages play together and learn not only from their teachers, but also from each other.

  • @lechtrzeciak6084
    @lechtrzeciak6084 4 роки тому +5

    I perfectly remember this - should be world-famous - scene of Elsa taking her first classes on trumpet in a group featuring Alba, and then performing live with - literally ;-) - giants on stage... Looking at this beautiful performance from Martha, seeing how she approaches the musicmaking, marvelling at the development of all these wonderful kids that start from scratch and gradually mature both musically as well as personally in SAJB, I would like to refer to Jacob Collier Qwest Masterclass ua-cam.com/video/mLJVvjqMjbo/v-deo.html. It must be a formidable task to guide a development of a young talent in a way that lets him/her increase skill level higher and higher, without killing an innate passion for music and lowering the "inner ear", which is so often happening in mediocre music schools. On the contrary, the 'inner ear' should be 'raised' as well. I think Jacob was lucky to get that from home, being a son of a pro musician and a grandson of a pro musician (which, BTW, by itself guarantees nothing...). The people here ... some also get it in part from home (I know), but many get it largely from SAJB - from what? Joan's passion, assistance from other great associated musicians, friendly (I suppose) and supportive peers, chance to perform with stars (all of the above :-) )? On the other hand, own skills can be felt as very limiting, especially for those with 'high ears' - some (as Collier said about himself) find it naturally motivating to exercise (he - notably - did not use the word EXERCISE) to allow himself to express in na fuller way. Others may find it frustrating, at least occasionally - it's a great job to support them and prevent from quitting. As I understand, this is in part through assigning them tasks of increasing, but appropriate difficulty that builds a self-confidence and also a trust in master.
    The result is a constant pour of new great musicians appearing in front of our eyes, seemingly out of nowhere...

      Lech Trzeciak: some interesting thoughts here ... nicely put ... thanks for taking the time! R (Australia)

    • @branscombeR
      @branscombeR 4 роки тому

      Lech Trzeciak: I've now had time to look at the brilliant Jacob Collier master class you linked to above and noted his description of the tension he felt, when he was starting out on his personal musical journey, between his natural 'ear' for music, which was evidently highly advanced, and his technical skills, which always lagged behind. He describes how he was motivated to improve his ability to actually create and play music, in order that his skills could 'catch up' with his ear. Maybe this hints at Chamorro's 'secret sauce'? In his interviews, Joan says he encourages his students to learn the tunes first by singing them, and only then try to duplicate them using the instrument(s) they've chosen to play ... long before they learn music theory or even how to read a score... the reverse of what I gather is usual in 'normal' schools. Ramón Tort's 2012 documentary, 'A Film About Kids and Music' showed other people apart from Joan working with the children, but we don't get to hear from them or the parents, which I think would be really useful, if Ramón ever decides to make a sequel. Watching the Collier workshop reminded me that his pre-covid touring band included a young Portuguese singer/musician, Mariana Secca, who uses the stage name 'MARO'. She has worked with Lucia Fumero, daughter of celebrated Argentinian bass player Horacio Fumero, who lives in Barcelona and has played alongside the SAJB's regular pianist, Ignasi Terraza. Lucia's own beautiful jazz composition, 'La noche y el día', can be found on UA-cam featuring none other than our very own Rita Payés! As Shakespeare definitely didn't say but might have if he'd been born 500 years later ... 'what goes around, comes around.' R (Australia)

    There seemed a moment there where Miss Vives was not pleased with her delivery of the first phrase, maybe a bit afraid to stray too far from the tune, but frankly ... sometimes these old standards, especially Gershwin, should be played as faithful to the original as possible. Martha Vives, that was perfect. Your stylizing was subtle and tasteful, and your smile at the end warmed my heart.

    And yet another beautiful trumpet voice from Barcelona. Technique can be taught and practised, but musicality and sensitivity must already reside in the player, although it still needs to be cultivated. And musicality certainly radiates from Martha's horn.
    Beautiful sound, beautiful interpretation. Between Elsa and Martha, the trumpet section will be in very good hands over the next few years.

    Wow ... Martha Vives is the latest (for now) of the incredible trumpet school of the Sant Andreu Jazz Band. From there have come Andrea Motis, Alba Armengou, Joan-Mar Sauqué, Víctor Carrascosa, Elsa Armengou and now Martha joins the band, a newcomer when the recording was made, who demonstrates a talent and technique out of the ordinary at 15 years of age. Well, out of the ordinary for any other place than SAJB, where the out of the ordinary becomes the most ordinary, I don't know if I'm making myself clear 😉. And don't miss Oatts' faces listening to Martha, a mixture of awe, admiration and approval.
    Dick Oatts on sax, what can I say, a world-class great. And among the rest of the kids, a mixture of established "veterans" like Marçal, Alba, Èlia and Carla, with the new generation taking over.
    A beautiful song and a beautiful performance.
