    Just discovered your channel. - Wow, you've been around the block and landed in Paradise! Great to hear that you are enjoying it. I have spent a lot of time in Cambodia, it's such a happy place, I've always said, 'you can feel the vibes as soon as your feet touch the tarmac'. I will be coming back to stay, probably Phnom Penh though, as I'm more of a towny. You did well to get out of England.👍

      Yes, at times it’s true you can get lonely. But that’s one of the reasons that I like to stay in hostels as you meet the best people. And everybody is in the same boat. When I was back in the UK, I also used to get lonely at least here if I feel lonely, I can take a walk as the weather is normally nice and hot and sunny. 😎 have you ever traveled solo before? Before I started this adventure, I took a few days break in Northern Ireland. I loved every second. 🥰 🇰🇭

    Using Wise for transfers. Are you aware you can hold different currencies in your Wise account.
    For instance you can transfer GBP to Wise and then convert it to Riel and hold in your "pot". You can see the rate of exchange before you convert and they will inform you of the charge too. Generally very competitive with any money changer. You can then transfer some or all of your Riel to your chosen bank account as and when. All works very smoothly but transfer times can vary. Think a day or two ahead of when you need to transfer and avoid Fridays - money often doesn't arrive until Monday.

    As long as you are happy -- and you appear quite content to me ! --- Siem Reap is my pick for a retirement destination also - been searching the world for 3 years. My other choice is in the Philippines - a very similar type of choice. Both have very friendly locals and are welcoming to expats from the US like myself. Low costs of living can be had in both countries but Cambodia has the best "retirement visa" if your over 55 ! A 'tourist visa' is cheap & easy in the Philippines and renewable for up to 3 years. Retirement visas are expensive compared to Cambodia. - - - I really do like Siem Reap a lot - and so do many other older expats. Younger digital nomads may get a bit bored and prefer the Capital. I'm old & frugal - so Siem Reap certainly suits me just fine !!! Everything needed is pretty much there. Highly specialized medical care may require a trip to Bangkok - for affordable quality care. ❤ 👍 🙏 ✌ 🍺

      I’m from the Philippines but I live in London, I was in the Philippines last Easter for holidays. Prices there are skyrocketing like food, electricity and house rents. Whereas I found Thailand and Vietnam as waaaaay more cheaper . I’m even thinking about retiring in Cambodia or Thailand in the future. Like 6months in Asia and 6months in Spain where we have a property.

The washing machine needed repairs and it was done the next day. Also my hob stopped working so it’s been replaced with a one burner which is fine for me as I only need one. • @nanwithabackpack
      @nanwithabackpack  2 місяці тому

      All property is listed in US dollars everything else you buy in shops and restaurants is listed in US dollars and Khmer riel. In bank accounts, you can either deposit money in US dollars or riel. When transferring from a foreign bank, it’s easier to transfer into dollars. I then use my Revolut card to take riel out of the cash point machine and deposit into my account. So I have access to both currencies.

    Thanks for the great video and information given, I am seriously considering moving to Cambodia from the UK, so just a few follow-up questions: 1. You used the Wise Card as a part of your Bank transfer from the UK - why did you do this [do you HAVE TO do this in a Bank Transfer process from the UK to a Cambodian Bank]?
    2. Can you / somebody from the UK just do a direct Bank Transfer of money to a Cambodian Bank [I think I would choose / use ABA as other Cambodia based UA-camrs also recommend it] in the normal straight-forward way once they have set-up a Cambodian Bank Account?
    Thanks once again

      @@JOHN-s6n5n I chose wise as it was the most straightforward way of doing it. I have not tried a direct transfer so unfortunately not sure if it’s possible. Sorry I couldn’t be any more helpful. If I find out an answer I will let you know.

      @@nanwithabackpack Maybe I am missing something, but to use a third party Card in [what could / should be a direct] UK / Cambodia Bank transfer does not [on the face of it] appear to be the most straightforward way ?? Still I suppose you had your reasoning, which [very possibly] is your private business.
      If you ever do a direct transfer please let me know [I would also be interested in the fees / costs applied by the Cambodian Bank / ABA as I can find-out the fees, if any, applied by Lloyds / Halifax here in the UK]. Thanks for getting back to me with the info, [as] the nuts and bolts of traveling / the practicalities living in new places do interest viewers [as if you are not clued-up one way or another you pay for it - as I am sure you know].

    I've heard of guys smuggling in pastries into Thailand, shady meet ups in a car park for a meat pie 🤣
    For power outages it's not to bad to sort a UPS or battery bank for I.T. stuff. Loosing power to a freezer for hours would suck in that heat.
    How's the sound proofing in these places? Can you talk to the neighbors? Here there convo or TV?
    Here I couldn't throw a stone to the the neighbors land without a big walk.

      I’ve not had a single power cut since I’ve been in my apartment. When I was staying in the hostel, there was one for about 5-10 minutes. I can’t say that I’ve heard much from my next door neighbours sometimes I hear dog barking at night but apart from that it’s pretty quiet.
