Drill to Fix Over the Top

  • Over the Top swing plane refers to a path that is above the swing plane on the downswing. This path produces an out-to-in swing path, which imparts an unwanted spin on our ball. The result is typically a weak-right or slice. Instead, we need an in-to-out swing path. Where I see players go off the swing plane the most is in the transition. So, let's get your transition on the "inside to more solid shots" path!

    OMG. This really was a tremendous lesson. I have been playing golf for 45 years and I have had many in person lessons but could never get rid of over the top. I don't know why, but for some reason this short little lesson had all the right visual cues and dialogue. I went to the range the next day and in under 1 bucket I was coming through the target zone from the inside and hitting the irons high and far with less effort. Your my new golf instructor. Thank You !!!!!!

    This is interesting. After watching this a few years ago I went to the range and hit the ball well. HOwever I would struggle off and on with coming over the top over the last few years. I watched your video on sitting into the back leg and that helped me tremendously with making a fuller turn. I would hit the ball intermittently well then not so well. I just watched this again and it hit me what I was missing. Turning my left shoulder over my back foot!!!!!! I was getting a full turn ..and probably sometimes I would turn to my back foot and other times not. I was not conscious of this. Wow. The subtleties and nuances of the golf swing are vast!!!!! So much valuable information on your channel!!!! Thanks!!!

    This is absolutely THE BEST advice I have gotten in 40 years of golf. Fixes the TWO elements of my swing that were the achilles heel of my golf game. Now my shots are much more consistent, more power, with easier swing, better balance. You keep saying "trust me" on this one....I guess I can trust you now. Can't thank you enough.

    What a woman. I have been struggling with slices for over 15 years. Several pros telling me about out to in, hip turns etc. etc., to no avail. Now,thanks to you, in a simple and clever way, I have at last understood it. Don't worry about turning the hips on the downswing, just drop your arms and the rest follows. Fantastic, now I only have to worry about bruised ribs...many thanks

    Christina, You are the very best teacher, probably for ladies, but definitely for super senior guys. Love this video and many others. Today, I tried to get my chest turning more on the backswing. Missed a few shots, but hit most (especially some drivers) much further and straighter. On a course where I struggle to get in the high 80s, had a nice 83 today (with a bad bounce, 3-putt, double biggie on 17). When I approximate your swing (teaching), the shots look like golf shots. I just wish you were much closer to North Texas. I am truly addicted to your teaching. Thanks for all your great knowledge and ability to effectively communicate.

    Christina, you are the best golf instructor I have ever viewed on You Tube. Please keep those video coming as I am mentoring a young golfer and he is rapidly improving especially with your number one swing thought of 'zip Zip' True story. The other day I came across two young golfers. Showed them the grip and told them to keep their upper body connected with an imaginary zipper up theirs sleeves. Both were excited over their personal swing and proclaimed their love of golf. Naturally I gave you the credit and told them to look you up in You tube. Again, many thanks.

    "Make sure your leading shoulder is over your back foot" - best tip ever! Thank you so much! I've been playing for over 2 years now, consulted plenty of pga tour coaches, no one told me about this. My swing is much smoother now, I don't top or slice anymore and most important of all; my back doesn't hurt after a round! This introduces a little bit of fade but that's easy to control. Thanks again :)

    Thank you so much for posting this! Been watching sooooo many videos from so many pros and still kept hitting that awful over the top fade. That point about getting your forward shoulder over your back foot made it all click for me and helped clear space for my hands to drop and come at the ball from the inside. I'm a 10 handicap and had been struggling to improve; I dropped 5 strokes my last round using this and got into the 70's for the first time in years.

    You are right on the money there, Christina. You have highlighted all that is wrong with my swing at present. Weak slices, fat shots, pulls, ugly OTT hooks - I got it all going on. My h-cap is heading the wrong way and am now off a 17. I am trying to focus on the back foot drill where my back foot is drawn behind my front foot to promote the in to out swing path. When I do this drill, I absolutely flush it. Will give your drill a try too. Thank you again.

    Worked immediately, first 7 iron hit in the net before my round was hit so well, after practising the drill, hit the frame above the net. It would have gone long and into orbit. [Recap in Korean] < Over the Top 교정 훈련 >
    * Over the Top swing
    이 때 클럽이 미끄러지듯이 임팩트구역을 지나가야 한다 (상체를 목표쪽으로 돌리면서 스윙하면 안 된다).
    팔이 임팩트구간을 지나서 끝까지 스윙을 다 할 때까지 등짝은 그대로 있어야 한다.

    Very nice drill..one question in the last segment of your video you say that keep your weight on the right foot and have back to the target let the arms fall but the arc bottoms out way behind the ball and how to make ball first turf next contact and how to feel the movement? Thx!

    • @MorePars
      @MorePars  6 років тому

      Hi Ravi - the key with this drill is a focus on the transition - the first move from back to downswing. Focus on getting your lead shoulder over your back toe during backswing, and from there, without moving back, drop hands down....at that point you can swing through fully transferring your weight to the front side.

  • @dcpw10
    @dcpw10 6 років тому

    Thanks for the tips Christina.
    I'm a bit confused. Some teachers amphasised on staying centered, but you said L shoulder should be over R foot, which means a weight shift to the R. And how about moving the hip first ?
    Can you please enlighten me, a poor old chronic overthetopper?
    Thanks!
    David from HK

    • @MorePars
      @MorePars  6 років тому

      Hi! Thanks for watching. Staying centered is great as long as the weight gets transferred to your back leg. Instead, many amateurs version of staying centered results in a reverse spine angle and too much weight still on front side (resulting in an over the top move on downswing). So instead, getting that lead shoulder over your back toe really promotes a proper weight transfer (shift ) into your back leg. On the downswing, YES, your weight transfers to your lead leg and THEN your hips rotates open. Too many players, rotate their lead hip a tad too soon, resulting in the spin-out. Hope that makes sense!

    I been having over the top issue forever. When I drop my club with this drill I keep hitting 1-2 inches behind the ball. Why? Am I releasing too early?

    • @MorePars
      @MorePars  6 років тому +1

      Make sure that once you drop, you get to your finish aggressively...where all your weight is on your front side. If you are not firing through, you could chunk it. Meaning, if your legs are passive and you are not rotating through with your upper body (once you have dropped your hands down) then you could chunk it.

    • @thad595
      @thad595 6 років тому

      Get that back elbow well in front towards your belly button when you drop the club and turn through...harder to release early that way (the back shoulder works down but the back elbow should work out in front and not stuck behind. Try doing 3/4 practice drills with back elbow tucked and working out in front (towards the belly button) and try to extend the club so that contact happen beyond the ball and not behind it. Remember to turn through. This really helped my problem with hitting fat shots.

  • @einstu
    @einstu 6 років тому

    How do you avoid staying on your back foot, in other words, how do I transfer before?

    • @MorePars
      @MorePars  6 років тому

      Stuart - once your hands drop, then aggressively get to your front side. Hips rotate left and back shoulder wraps all the way around on the finish. This drill is a focus on the transition. Once you transition correctly, you can really aggressively fire through to your finish on the correct swing path!

    • @einstu
      @einstu 6 років тому

      My swing thought for the moment is to turn the hips to get onto my left side, then my hands drop and I spin my shoulders, the reverse of how I coiled. I also notice that I have to use the hips to get the hands to drop otherwise, I force my arms which also leads to being too far on my left, over the top, etc.

      Make sure you get to a full finish and pressure onto your lead side. Also be careful not to elevate the lead shoulder too early during the transition. I'll do an updated tip on this soon. Excellent question

    So...either I do these drills over and over again like a touring pro to groove some brand new swing characteristics to fit my modern light weight clubs.... . Or, I just buy a new set of clubs that are weighted properly, therefore allowing me to naturally find the proper swing slot, rythym, timing, and balance....Hmmm

      Johnny Apple Seed Suggest you have to do both. Get whatever clubs, but you also have to get the right moves.
      Better clubs will not make you a better player. Better players can do more with better clubs, though.
      Remember, it's not the violin that plays; it is the person holding it.

    There is a woman on the internet with the most annoying voice, BUT, every time that I listen to her my swing improves. 😁
