If you're interested mostly in actual color grading the majority of it is done in look creation. So when looking for a masterclass that term is probably what you are looking for. Also people should know that the better the people that supply you the content, the more impressive the grades will be. Colorist is just a small credit when you see the hundreds of people scrolling by you at the end of a film. Most of which are rockstars in their fields.

I still remeber how Qazi was teaching in his early videos how film look LUTs (e.g. Kodak 2383) should be applied 😁 And it was the “right way” until Darren Mostyn published a video on which he explained that you need to use cineon film log output gamma in order for this LUTs to work properly 🙂

Qazi is a classic "street-smart" guy, who (probably) worked hard to acquire some of the trade skills and people skills. HOWEVER, his pedagogy skills are zero, even lower than that. The jargon, "parking it here", "guys, this is the sauce" and all the other crap without any real method to his madness makes those lessons unusable. Watch even ONE video by Cullen Kelly and there is a man who teaches you how to fish, and not just giving you the proverbial fish. For anyone really, I mean REALLY interested in becoming a pro in any trade, one should focus on learning the WHY, not the HOW. Why am I changing this part of the image? SHOULD I be changing it at all? How much should it be changed?
Cullen really has exactly this beautiful approach and builds upon solid foundations. Dado Valentic knows his stuff (but he is really, REALLY up there, so you need to do your prep work), Alexis Van Hurkman is another one, Darren Mostyn has great teaching skills as well... Lowepost is a good community to be a part of, ACES Central, Mixinglight is TERRIFIC!
    Qazi is a joke.

In classical music, a masterclass is usually a master giving live feedback to students. That WOULD be interesting from colorists. It'd also be interesting to see how a pro colorist would handle amateur footage. (I know the short answer is that they wouldn't. 😅 But it'd be helpful for newbs like me to see how one might go about maximizing suboptimal footage.)

So I do agree with some of the things you said in this video. Especially the suggestion you made about him doing walkthroughs of him actually grading client work and talking us through his thought process and why he does whatever he does. At this stage I would really enjoy that. I do also have to say that the weekly color grading challenges in the Facebook group (that you participate in after the course) do offer this via his critiques and feedback. They can be immensely helpful in refining your skills for real world experiences. Also masterclasses can exist for different skill levels. There can be (and are) masterclasses for beginners, intermediates, and advanced pros. It’s interesting that you went into it with the expectations that you did. Everything about how he markets his teachings and the course in the webinars, marketing videos, and descriptions on the site is the opposite of what you expected. He literally says that the course will “give you what you need to go from beginner to pro” as a freelancer and from “zero to hero”. And in that regard, I think the course combined with the Facebook group challenges absolutely delivers on that in you’re willing to put in the work. Am I claiming that he’s the best colorist or teacher? No. But IMO, he does provide a product that delivers on what it says it will do.

    • @MDFariasMusic
      @MDFariasMusic Рік тому +1

My only complaint about the weekly challenges is that they changed to only a select few being critiqued by Qazi himself. You do get critiques from others on your post but going into it it was kind of like put out there that you’d be getting feedback from him personally but then that changed because the group and amount of submissions got too high. I also feel that for the course that as his techniques change that he would update those parts within the course. I also feel the way the modules are organized could be better.

This seems to be theme with every single masterclass in existence. I think it's time for people to realize that no, there is no difference between a masterclass and a tutorial. They are the same. I agree with you that every "masterclass" out there has somehow failed to deliver much more than what's available on UA-cam. However, in the case of color grading I know there are a ton of techniques and information in this space that does not exist on UA-cam. It's often in the hands of professional colorists who don't want to share their tricks, and academics. So at the end of the day, you have to source that stuff from technical blogs, papers, and networking with colorists. Networking, not because the material requires individual mentorship, but because those people are only willing to share with their friends.

For example the movie Knives Out, when you look at the actors skin it’s almost like you can see their pores. Is that noise/grain, post sharpness added, or is it the camera be filmed with. If this is done in post how can you achieve it. It’s hard to get someone who’s so big and with so many followers to respond to your questions. And you aren’t the first person who’s said it was disappointing for the price. There’s a whole Reddit page about it.

In my humble opinion a "master" class should be only 30 - 50% technical. Color gradring is an art by itself, and masters don't teach the tools, but are able to pass on something more that will allow you to make the best out of the tools. The tools are numerous and always evolving. UA-cam+lot of practice get most people to a descent level. I actually noticed I benefit more from these classes when I already experimented myself. They just give the words and a structure to what I already figured out.

The masterclass sucks, but the problems you're talking about are totally fixable + using Arri footage doesn't really make things easier. @@SagarGanesh_ContentCreator great , agree . I always found this part a bit challenging when it comes to payment and stuffs, there are many people as clients left me without paying my money, but you are right . It makes alot of differences

@@Cyrusyami you get 'no pay runners' everywhere.
      1. Dont be scared to take advance.
      2. Use 50% opacity watermarks ruthlessly.
      3. See to that you take payment before giving final copy.
I usually follow these protocols and 80% of times i get my payments, i too still get 'no pay runners' and ill pay tomorrow schemes. Dont get discouraged, Just try avoiding them at most and delay their work if you take up.I felt Its all just the courage to act for yourself.

that sounds pricey. Give a TAC resolve training a shot. Walters class is infused with tons of useful info.

Thanks for your honest review, I am in the same stage you're at and it's unfortunate paying a good sum of money and not getting the value needed. I am in the same boat of looking at some Masterclasses and glad to see your review.

Thats why i downloaded the torrent 😂 Many people complained about the masterclass. I agree, the videos are more some kind of UA-cam tutorials than a real masterclass.
