I was at this match and also the replay just a few days later. West Ham could and should have won, but Liverpool’s ‘experience’ saw them through in the end, just as it did in Cardiff in 2006.
I was asked to write the words to scouser tommy on the back of an envelope before the game because I was the only one who knew the words in the section I was in.
Barry Davies quite possibly theWORST commentator in history, says in this game that the goalkeeper made a great save, he didn’t do anything but stand there, the ball hit him, there was a lot more.
West Ham had a great team during this era and they deserved to get something out of this game. The replay at Villa Park saw the emergence of a young Welsh lad named Ian Rush. And the rest is history.
I agree. West Ham were an excellent cup side around this time. The previous year they beat Arsenal in the FA Cup final. We were all expecting the first ever all Merseyside FA Cup final when the semi final draw paired Liverpool with Arsenal and Everton with West Ham. We both lost! The Hammers were rank outsiders out of the four sides, being in the second Division, but deservedly went on to win it. Respect.
I remember Ray Clemence writing about this game in 'Shoot!' magazine when I was a kid - I think his article was titled, Ëcstasy, then Agony". It's taken me 38 years to actually watch the game to understand what he meant. Incredible!
Doesn't this game show up today's football. Passion, attacking football. No play acting and diving. Never will we see ghis again. Premier league 🥱 yawn
I was 16 and just starting to think that I was a bit of a lad.The worse trouble I ever seen at Wembley following Lfc was this game.Looked like Spandau Ballet fighting sham 69.
@r que Try the season before.Any LFC travelling supporter will be happy to talk about it.Coz they got through it.Worst away ever for the Annie rd end. There is nothing like it these days. Was with me Old fella. He'd been around, turned into a dad and son jogging team.We were some of the lucky ones, got to Seven sisters without a smack in the mouth
Paul yes he did handle it, there was no argument from the Pool players, and the linesman rightly flagged for offside, Lee was on the ground but the law back then was offside no matter what but the ref was a Pool fan
@@terrygill430 'Interfering with play' was at the ref's discretion even then. That's why he decided Lee's position was irrelevant. Considering Lee wasn't seeking to gain an advantage, I'd say Clive Thomas got it right.
These highlights witch keep popping up are brilliant .the crowds the commentary so much better than today
The offside rule is better now

Thanks for digging this out. I was 17 and my first live game watching my Hammers. Football was so much better back then.
I was at that match, yeah I know I’m old. Great memories though.
You won’t get better commentary than this.
Thanks for posting. Haven't seen this since these MOTD highlights were first shown.
I am a red, but I also love and respect whu, great footballing days back then.
Brooking. What a player!
Loved Phil Parkes

Crazy that they had replay's of cup finals in those days.
In 1980, Liverpool and Arsenal played FOUR times before the semi-final was decided. Who needs penalties!
Irwin clearly wasn't offside.
Sammy Lee was mind
Phil Neal is in an offside position at 0:33.
Two great teams
Always wondered what McDernott was saying to Clemence after the penalty ecision, surely he wasn't blaming him?
I used to live next door to West Ham's Number 7
What number was that, 5 or 6?
(Joke)
He wipes the snot from his nose then shakes hands before lifting the cup. Oh, those innocent days...

Oh shut up you miserable moaning twat
You havent got a clue what you are talking about😡
Liverpool cheat to the last..handballing over the bar. No more than we expected
Could say the same of like West ham and man u on those years
Love they had shirts without sponsor shit all over them. Clean and simple shirts shorts and socks.

1:36 Frank Lampard's dad
Also called frank Lampard

Amusing that neither the officials nor the players nor the commentator seemed to understand the offside rule!
I remember back then it was 2 player rule not one as it is today. 2 player rule 1925 to 1990 according to wiki.
I thought the last time west ham got to a cup final we were still in black n white😂😂😂😂😂😂
2006? We played Liverpool at Cardiff and should have won.
A pair of brilliant saves in this from Parkes and Clemence
I'm fall in love with Liverpool
Haha, was there as a 9 yr old. Terrible fights outside before game I recall
Brick Top and afterwards :-)

@r que police decisions sometimes- and no way is as far as 3 miles to seven sisters - that is part of the district of Tottenham
@@Keithbarber Google says 2.1 miles
Could have been offside
Sammy Lee's goal should have stood 100%. Dont think McDermott actually handled it either. Remember watching this on VHS growing up.

Paul Us Hammers robbed again just like in 2006 final☹️⚒
@@elisabrown3018 You weren't robbed in '81. You got a deserved draw at Wembley; but Liverpool were a different class in the replay.
