When I first saw Les Mis I didn't understand why Javert had tocommit suicide and why he does not appear "beyond the barricade" in the finale but then I realized that the whole point of the story is this: The difference between Valjean and Javert is that Valjean goes to heaven because he learns to accept forgiveness and Javert is damned forever because he cannot.
