On the Plate Armor thing, it's not an error. It's 5500 to buy +1 Plate, but 3500 if you're crafting it. 1500 for the plate and then 2000 for materials to enchant it.
I'm honestly okay if the DMG has a lot of stuff veteran DMs already know how to handle. I do appreciate how that "don't be exploitative" rule balances all the "that's probably not what they meant to write" new rules. I don't love that it puts the burden on the DM to judge what is and isn't rules-as-intended.
There’s no such thing as a set of perfectly written, air-tight rules. People who want to will always look for and argue for exploits. And so there will always be a need to adjudicate those arguments.
Except it really doesn't. Prime example AL Tells DM that they are to interpret RAW so if WotC intended for a feature to work a certain way but that is not how they wrote it they are to follow the written interpretation. So the argument about Simulacrums can't cast simulacrum but the can cast wish to replicate Simulacrum may not be intended but is definitely written this way so still allowed in AL. Technically there is still a way to make yourself a different creature using clone and true Polymorph RAW. They also made true Polymorph a lot more complicated because RAW you can game the spell. Cast true Polymorph and make yourself a dragon tortoise, you gain 341 temp HP drop concentration immediately and you return to your form but RAW you don't lose temp HP by dropping the spell so you are now the toughest Wizard around.
The original rules said that the DM was the final arbiter. That wording should not have been removed because player should only have input, not final say. Far to many players are argumentative about rules interpretations, even when they aren't technically correct.
The hard part is, am I exploiting a rule? or am I using the rule as intended. Because I feel like the only reason being able to draw/stow a weapon with each attack would be for me to be able to go from a two handed weapon to a shortsword... because if it was about dual wielding, then the feat takes care of that.

For the items that store a spell, is there a particular level you have to be to craft those? I think back to artificer getting spell-storing items around level 11. Also, are there options to store them in other items (boots, rings, clothing, etc.), or is it just weapons/armor/staff? Either way, I'll probably have my eventual artificer utilize this quite often, since I like the idea of him always having a utility spell in his back pocket in a pinch. I was already going to do that with magic initiate and feather fall, since the one free cast is likely to be enough in a given day, if needed at all.
Haven't seen it yet but I would venture a guess that you can create spell storing items equal to your spell slot max so Ring of spell storing at lvl 9 (5 slots) or a 9 charge equivalent at lvl 17.
Having scrolls for situational spells was a great reason to play the Scribe subclass. Also a useful way to burn off excess coins in a monty haul campaign. Sadly consumable magic items were vastly overpriced in 2014.
This is exactly the same stuff that was on 4th edition dm guide 1 e 2. In my opinion those books are the best gm book I have ever read. There’s quite everything the guy talked about, except for the x card, which is a pretty modern concept and some other minor stuff. Good thing if they took that stuff and put it in the new DM guide.
Its great to know there is more dm stuff in the dms guide and that the book is good. I find it funny to say its the best book you've seen and then spend most of the video describing the 4th ed book :P
“This kind of optimizing is part of the game” I just want all the people who look at every multi class character as a minmaxer to really let that one sink in. I’ve read too many comments who view any concept of character optimization as flat out minmax.
Reality is most people are MC if you compare real life to the game. Prime example I work in IT no one I work with can say all my jobs have been IT some did retail, some did hospitality, some did construction, some did military. So why is it so weird to think that you wouldn't want some of that variety in game.
Even though I played D&D back in the 80s I never really got into the lore. Most of our stuff was homebrew, and even when I was DMing in the Forgotten Realms I didn't use a lot of that stuff or I've long since forgotten it. I honestly think that they could expand the lore section into its own book (monetizing the brand more) with more in depth entries that what seem to be presented here.
There are lore books. However 2014 generally dropped the lore within the modules, rather than having a full campaign setting. Perhaps this was the result of SCAG having been poorly designed, and Ravnica being disliked because it was inspired by MtG.
I'm glad to hear that they have the advice in there. I don't know if they were planning on doing it anyway, but a lot of feedback I gave during the many Unearthed Arcana's was to put that stuff in the DMG. Rules to play should be in the PHB, DMG should have tables, etc., but ALSO tips, tricks, advice to old hand DMs and new DMs (especially new ones). They have access to folks who've been DMs for near 50 years, maybe longer, put things in the DMG, such as, 'What to do if one of the players cancel last minute' or how to 'arbitrate a dispute at the table', etc. Edit: I feel like "don't be a dick", needs to be, sadly, reminded to too many people.
Just in the middle of designing a new DM screen. I am restraining myself so hard not to emboss “Don’t be a Dick” in bold text on the player-facing panels 😂
They have ranges of prices for magic items based on rarity in the original dmg, it doesnt particularly help which means the new one isnt any more helpful. Saying "magic item shops exist" doesnt change things for 90% of games. Its like saying armory shops exist but just giving price ranges for light, medium, and heavy armor without specific prices which leads to plate armor breaking the game becauae it is obviously better than every other heavy armor but is in the heavy armor general price...
@FreeXenon, They’re size small, lawful neutral, yellow creatures with near infinite hit points that like to say ‘banana’ for no particular reason and snicker at the word ‘bottom’ :~P
Minions are easy to make, really, just take a creature 1 or 2 CR below your party level, UP their AC to match the CR of your party, give them 1 HP and put lots of them in the encounter! You can even UP their AC by 1 or 2 points above the recomended CR for your party if you wanna get spicy, they'll be harder to hit but fall easily to area damage or controll spells. The idea is to keep them as close as hard to hit as the main threat, and with some damage potential to keep them scary, but faster to take down when hit. You can adjust as you need, give them resistance to control spells or evasion if you want them to survive area damage. The main point is to make your players feel intimidated by the raw numbers but rewarded when they land their strikes! You can go really crazy with minions.
I'm happy about the rest of the stuff but am still a little miffed about magic item prices being static again. They could have had a suggested price per item within its description. Not all magic items within the same tier should be valued the same. Some are absurdly stronger picks than others within their tier and that cost should be reflected.
There's a half-orc in Dimension 20 Fantasy High with adoptive halfling parents named Gorgug (from his orcish side) Thistlespring (from the halfling side). That campaign came out before the new rules, though, but if you haven't seen it I do recommend it. It used to be behind a paywall but it is now available on UA-cam.
I purchased the 2024 phb. I had hopes...but I am over DnD 2024. It is sooo bad on execution....even if some of the class balancing ideas are decent in concept. Literally dont care about the DMG and MM.
I'm worried that the Bastion system is basically a tower defense game. Build up your defenses, but when you're AFC (away from castle), you'll be attacked. No thank you.
Sounds more like what they did in the Water deep: Dragon heist book with troll skull manor if so attacks are a possibility but nowhere near the primary event.
So they have removed any reference to any cultural differences in the DMG as well... good to know (and ignore) Everything is grey goo. A LOT of the stuff you have mentioned already existed, albeit probably more condensed and some of the fleshing probably came from other sources. So I am sure there is stuff I can use from the new DMG... although it seems weird that it appears a lot of DMs/Players need WotC to "give permission" to allow things that a lot of us have been doing for a LONG time. Just a perception I have from posts and from WotC's own interview language. "We allow that now" just made me cringe. I honestly wish there were background based on culture. My PC races are much more segregated and diverse than the boxed sets. So the concept of a Noble is foreign to a gnome in my world as an example. Some are more or less universal though, like Criminal (although there could be variations on what constitutes a crime).
As a consummate homebrewer, I am sooo glad that the rules are separate from the world and flavor. Reading the rules should not give players preconcieved notions about the world.
@@sudonim7367 To some degree I totally agree with you on that. Hadn't thought about it in that context. However, it would have been nice for some blurb to my point that not all cultures will have some backgrounds in the books. I hope there is some text telling the players that even everything in the PHB is DM purview as well, depending on story and setting etc. It seems too MMO-esque in some respects.
I guess what I don't understand is why the DMG needs to rehash so many known topics of social conduct, and in book form nonetheless. This is not even innovative - they just summarize the evolution of the community. They should've just produce videos explaining such approaches, like the Dungeon Master's Tips they had back in the day. This is not why I would buy the D&D DMG.
Do you think everyone is going to see said videos? By putting these things into the DMG they are showing that they don't want the people running their games to be dicks and to take into consideration that people have different hang ups. One of my players, for example, doesn't like the visuals of someone being hit in the crotch. I'm going to honor that.
If they have arachnophobia or thalassophobia then yes. Which is why it's best to ask and nip it in the bud before the game begins. Either they need to leave because the campaign won't be a good fit for them, or the game can fit to accommodate them because it's an easy fix. Knowing is half the battle.
Out of all the books that have been released since I started playing, I have to be honest......these 2024 books have the least amount of hype. Really hoping for some massive failures for WoTC, so they can pull their heads out of their butts and start making some good content again.
I agree, but that would also require hasbro/wotc to actually hire a larger team instead of firing half the people while simultaneously doubling product output, which is how we are here now.
There may not be a lot of hype but they sold a decent amount. WotC said it was their fastest selling "product". I think it's going to get worse before it gets better.
I'm so tired of WotC/D&D making these books based mostly on information that was either in other source books besides the 2014 versions or table rules/homebrew that was so ubiquitous and then pretending they did us a favor and added so much new material. Collating from other sources is not the same as creating something new.
That's all fine. No problems with them making a more user friendly or new player/DM friendly materials. The problem becomes when they say "It's new!" or "We've added..." They haven't actually created that much new. The issue is not with the content per se, it's with how it's being misrepresented to make them look like they did more than they actually did. If they just called it what it was, I really wouldn't have a problem.
If magic item shops cant exist, that´s not the game for me, but 5E Non D&D along with Featfinder and all those MMORPG emulators are not for me. Long live real D&D
Magic item shops are a little nonsensical to me. Where did the shopkeeper get .millions of gold to stock it? Why isn't it robbed blind every night? Etc. It also minimizes the value and fun of finding or questing for items. DCC did similar things as dnd in not having Magic stores as an old school game. The 2014 buying and selling rules also encouraged taking down time. If you don't like all that, there are great 3rd party price lists. One of my dm's likes magic stores as long as you are in greyhawk, waterdeep, etc.
5E 2024 player’s handbook is a product created for shareholders that flails around trying to justify its own existence. The few good things added were non-essential and could have been tucked into a new 2014 product or as supplement. I’m sure DMG is the same mix of padding, cringe and the odd good idea.
But you could easily conceive of it as "a new 2014 product or as supplement." And I suspect if they released a wholly new edition you would be trolling in the comments with "These new rules were cReATed foR SHarEhoLDERS."
If you're not interested in buying it the 2014 DMG hasn't gone anywhere. If 10 years isn't enough time for them to sell anything new then how long exactly should they be waiting?
Whilst I hate hasbro, I do think the actual designers for dnd have great passion for the game. The DMG seems to be far better than last from everything I have seen and heard. So i will probably get the dmg but not the players handbook
@@PsyrenXY It is the "new" there that is the issue. What is "new" about these books? They are just rehashes of what we already have closing a few loop holes while adding a bunch more in. I don't know anyone who argues the 2024 books are a better designed game than 2014. It's just more powercreep to make people buy copies of stuff they already have.
Rules for VTT' ? Nope wasted use of space in the DMG, DM prep section sounds ok for new players not so much if you have the 2014 version already, section on dealing with bad players is comical (easy fix is kick the player or don't be a dick rule), whole section on absent player not needed, travel section sounds good, mental health section is comical, firearms, explosives and sci-fi weapons is for non-fantasy settings, Greyhawk sounds minimal but nice to get back that setting, crafting is weak (tools so), magic item costs typo already, magic weapon variety is something DM do already new DM, so good for No mention of the racist Mexican Orc art, so maybe it was removed
Please explain to me why are advice about how to deal about common problems that may show up on your table not needed in a manual for dms? Considering how most dnd related forums are swarmed with people which ask for advice for similar situations there is clearly demand for this. Especially for new dms that may not even consider this kind of problems. Also how is the orc art racist because of the vague western inspiration grow up.

Is the Dagger of Venom still an action to activate?
I think CP said something about this in the magic items video but I'm not sure.
I bet alot of online dnd players will hate hearing the "Hey, be chill" section when it comes to the social contract.
I always trust your take on things. You and Bob are my go to advice guys. I wasn't going to buy this one but I might just
For Flaming Weapons, are they limited to Melee weapons? :)
Flame Tongue is sadly, any melee weapon
I can’t help but be very excited for the new DMG!
Not finished the video yet, but I'm most looking forward to your coverage of the DM toolbox and encounter building stuff
Are Bastions going to work with Adventurer's League? That could be pretty interesting.
I'd be curious to see that as well
Yay! Looking forward to a new DMG!
Are the League of Malevolence or Valor's Call in the lore section of the DMG?
Can't wait for this book sounds epic!
The DMG: I can't *show* it to you... lol WotC, self own
I think in regards to thr plat armor example, it's saying 2k for the enchanting and 1500 to but the armor.
I really want more lore (or at least updated art) for the gods. Not all of them got fancy BG3 appearances.
“How to create a religion” lol
Better than 3rd edition's DMG?
They have ranges of prices for magic items based on rarity in the original dmg, it doesnt particularly help which means the new one isnt any more helpful. Saying "magic item shops exist" doesnt change things for 90% of games.
Its like saying armory shops exist but just giving price ranges for light, medium, and heavy armor without specific prices which leads to plate armor breaking the game becauae it is obviously better than every other heavy armor but is in the heavy armor general price...
Right on! I totally agree with this.
Are there actual rules for minions like 4E?
Please say yes!!!
@FreeXenon, They’re size small, lawful neutral, yellow creatures with near infinite hit points that like to say ‘banana’ for no particular reason and snicker at the word ‘bottom’ :~P
@@drzander3378 LOL!
I really thought this was going to be serious response!
How silly am I! =)
Also, use simple creatures, with simple attacks for minions, save the complexity for the main villains.
2014 had the heavy duty info on creating Spells.
Codified magic item drop rate sounds like pure cancer, just go play Diablo instead
I'm happy about the rest of the stuff but am still a little miffed about magic item prices being static again. They could have had a suggested price per item within its description. Not all magic items within the same tier should be valued the same. Some are absurdly stronger picks than others within their tier and that cost should be reflected.
They did say that items with a cost will be that cost + the cost of the tier. So they’ll end up having different prices
I'm picturing as to names. What if a halfling adopted a ork/orc or a ork/orc adopted a halfling.😅😂
Gorgug Thistlespring
@@gabrielthedim2466 ; I'm listening to a hfy story "a man from a dungeon". That's why I was thinking about the adoption thing.
I got a step granddaughter that wants to DM so this will be her birthday gift.
Did they revise the Pipes of Haunting? Nerf it or change the rarity? Useful item, but way OP for Uncommon.
The odds of possibly getting slapped by a WoTC/Pinkerton agent for spoiling Hasbro products is never zero...
Sounds more like what they did in the Water deep: Dragon heist book with troll skull manor if so attacks are a possibility but nowhere near the primary event.
still no Items for Druid wildshape or companion? ... sigh
It sounds like they took half DmsGuild and put it into the DMG.
So they have removed any reference to any cultural differences in the DMG as well... good to know (and ignore)
Everything is grey goo.
Because this is explicitly what people have been asking for.
Dude seriously imaginary spiders or theater of the mind underwater settings are "triggering" players ?
If you haven’t experienced a phobia yourself, you dunno, ya know? It doesn’t hurt to ask.
smh
If they have arachnophobia or thalassophobia then yes. Which is why it's best to ask and nip it in the bud before the game begins. Either they need to leave because the campaign won't be a good fit for them, or the game can fit to accommodate them because it's an easy fix. Knowing is half the battle.
Some people operate differently than you do.
@ but what if I got a different not so pc phobia? 😂
Did people really need all that ? 01:00 - 08:00 ?
Seems trivial advice
You would be surprised how much "trivial" or "obvious" advice isn't to a lot of people.
Everyone was a new dungeon master once.
So years of people begging we still don't get magic item prices. I bet sales will be terrible as they should.
I'm so tired of WotC/D&D making these books based mostly on information that was either in other source books besides the 2014 versions or table rules/homebrew that was so ubiquitous and then pretending they did us a favor and added so much new material. Collating from other sources is not the same as creating something new.
New players will appreciate only having to buy one book.
The thing about new players is that they don’t know what’s in what book or what house rules have become ubiquitous.
Also, if you are running the game, you decide whether or not there are magic shops. It doesn't matter what the book says
Here comes the part where we pretend that 5e was a perfect system that needs no changes 😂
Rules for VTT' ? Nope wasted use of space in the DMG, DM prep section sounds ok for new players not so much if you have the 2014 version already, section on dealing with bad players is comical (easy fix is kick the player or don't be a dick rule), whole section on absent player not needed, travel section sounds good, mental health section is comical, firearms, explosives and sci-fi weapons is for non-fantasy settings, Greyhawk sounds minimal but nice to get back that setting, crafting is weak (tools so), magic item costs typo already, magic weapon variety is something DM do already new DM, so good for
No mention of the racist Mexican Orc art, so maybe it was removed
The DMG needs to have all the base content and not rely on having to buy another book. So, you are going to get a lot of what is in the 2014 book.
I would have dropped half of this for item costs.
