We are BBC Stories, a group of journalists making films, long and short, with the younger audience (18-24) in mind. The idea is to tackle issues which concern and impact this group of people. So think about anything from race and identity to mental health, money and much more.

I tried to reply to your comment but UA-cam censored it. My response was entirely factual and complimentary toward Chinese people in Britain but UA-cam loves censorship and hates the truth.
I will try to rephrase my comment in a way that will enable it to get past the algorithms.
Chinese people in Britain have done really well economically, educationally and socially, just the same as they have in the USA and pretty much everywhere else they have moved to. A similar case can be made for Indian emigres.
Because they, as a minority group and often one that arrived in their new homes with very little, have succeeded where others have failed, they debunk the narrative that these countries are institutionally racist and unwelcoming.
This is an uncomfortable truth for those who wish to push the currently popular but completely false narrative.

    • @marykatherinegoode2773
      @marykatherinegoode2773 2 роки тому +2

      I will paraphrase WEB Dubois:
"Your country? How came it yours? Before the Windrush landed, they were there." Sorry dude, but it looks like the actual story here is
      1) The British Empire becomes the biggest trader of blacks from West Africa by the end of the 18th century
      2) The whole affair is a sordid one, involving a lot of violence, a lot of greed, and riches through ill gotten gains whose legacy is alive and well, like an unacknowledged illegitimate son
      3) America is often the punching bag for slavery in the UK, but the funny thing is nobody ever teaches the kids the truth that Uncle Sam learned at his mama's knee, up to and including using beatings, floggings, rape, and mutilation for punishment -in fact, every slave code that affected the Caribbean also affected the 13. The 13 had royal governors, just like Jamaica and St. Kitts did. They answered directly to the king.
      4) No reparations have ever been paid to the heirs of these slaves nor when the more curious ones find out the truth are they taken seriously.
      5) For centuries as a nation the people on the island have been encouraged to think British Culture=white culture, and the policy of a White England, a White Scotland, and a White Wales has been de facto in place for a long time, enforced by the Atlantic Ocean. Windrush would not be a controversy without it. It would have no significance either.
      6) Great Britain does eventually give up slavery, so credit where credit is due. That does not mean it stops supporting it, if indirectly. The biggest buyer of Southern cotton in 1861 is....Old Blighty. On top of that, the Empire starts to lose interest in its North American holdings in the 1830s, and starts to concentrate more on India. That is a history in and of itself, but the point is that with the Caribbean, the Empire cuts and runs. It even has the gall to force reparations on blacks to be paid to THE OVERLORDS who enslaved them, which shall not be paid off in full until the year 2015. On top of all THIS, it was not until massive slave revolts and the outright revolution in Haiti does the idea of emancipation catch fire. NONE of this is discussed in any A-level or GCSE class.
And now, the government that once encouraged blacks to come help and save the mother country has an attitude of wham bam thank you ma'am. Decades after the fact. When London is long since rebuilt. Nice, really, of Boris to be so considerate /s. Nice, really, when for so long GB has acted nothing like a good mother at all.

    • @Pete-tq6in
      @Pete-tq6in 2 роки тому +7

@@marykatherinegoode2773, incorrect, the largest trader of blacks from West Africa was Portugal. Of course, the far bigger trade was from East Africa to the Arabian peninsula.
Why should reparations be sought from those who never enslaved anyone by those who were never enslaved?
You know where the word ‘slave’ comes from, don’t you?
It comes from ‘slav’, from the Slavic people who were enslaved for hundreds of years by the Ottomans and Berbers.
Everyone with any real knowledge of this subject is absolutely sick of the nonsense that people with an overblown sense of victimhood and entitlement keep spouting.
There are plenty of countries run by black people, they have great climates and abundant natural resources.
Anyone who wishes to live in those societies would be better making positive moves to emigrate than sitting in Western Europe and whingeing.

I remember seeing my first black man, this wasn't in my home town, there were non there, this was on a trip to Birmingham (somewhere around 1960) and I was upstairs on a bus with my mom when I saw my first one. I was very excited and exclaimed 'ooh look mom, a black man'! Her embarrassment only increased as I pointed out 'another one' then 'another one' until I finally declared "I'm going to count them"! As an adult I can understand her embarrassment but my view was through the innocence of a child's eye. There was no malice in my mind. Strange that Olusoga makes no mention that the first people to enslave Africans were other Africans. Or that African slavers were raiding the coastal villages of Britain and Ireland centuries before any white man stepped on African soil.
Do you think African slaves were dehumanised more, or were more harshly treated, than British peasants and serfs of centuries past? Britain outlawed the slave trade early in the 19th century, but no such relief was afforded to our own ancestors who had to feed themselves and their families. Landowners in Britain didn't bestow the luxury of free food on their workers. Read a bit about British social structures and conditions then tell me how the blacks were singled out for special treatment.

One has just got to look for evidence of black slaves in India & Sri Lanka who arrived there well before the Dutch & the English. Slavery has been practiced since time in memorial, the Romans en-slaved the British along with everybody else but we don’t seek to be included in Italian history. Didn’t American, Russian, French etc soldiers die as well? Why aren’t we remembering them here in Britain? Why aren’t their names inscribed on plaques and statues? War happens everywhere so should we only celebrate British soldiers?
Do you see how stupid your point is now? Slavery happened elsewhere so it shouldn’t be talked about here in Britain? Despite the fact that Britain’s global standing today is propped up from the wealth accumulated by slavery profits and the infrastructure it helped to create.

Why does David Olusoga describe himself as 'black' when his mother was white? Surely, he is biracial. He would possibly reply -because he was treated as a 'black' in our society. Recently a teacher, Miss Codrington-Rogers stated that Black History should be taught. She claimed, 'We built the pyramids, developed modern numbers, built universities.' 'Our ancestors were philosophers, scientists, military strategists, authors, writers, activists and so much more.' When the aforementioned lady refers to 'black', is she not conflating 'black' with 'African'? Arabs do not describe themselves as black so her 'black' history is in danger of appropriating the accomplishments of others. David Olusoga is a very knowledgeable historian but when he talks about 'blacks' in the Roman Empire is he referring to the Africans of the North African Mediterranean area?. I know this article is about 'Black History' but I do wish ALL British people could be taught to pronounce the letter 't'. It drives me mad when I hear the term 'Bri'ish etc. I noticed some of the pupils' (I hate/loathe/abhor the term 'kids') pronunciation was lacking in 't's. Teach them how to speak! English is a beautiful language gradually being eroded by 'diversi'y' and woolly liberal teachers.

His first sentence contains an error when he calls the ship the "Windrush". It's name was actually the "Empire Windrush". The next error that I noticed was where he contradicted himself by saying at 0:20 that the story of black people in Britain goes all the way *back to* Roman times and then saying at 1:35 that there have always been black British people (which would imply that the story of black people in Britain goes all the way back to *before* Roman times).
Extraordinary claims should be backed with extraordinary evidence, and if he is claiming that history is being taught wrongly in British schools, lying by omission in effect, he should show a lot more attention to detail, surely? I mean, to shorten "Empire Windrush" to "Windrush" is to omit part of the story, the exact same thing he is accusing the British education system of doing.
So, at this point, having watched just a minute and a half of the video, I am feeling far more skeptical of this British university professor than I was at the beginning of the video.

As an African American, I find this very interesting. But I'm curious, how can Black British people call this history "their past" when they do not descend from the black slaves that the man in the video is referring to? If I am not mistaken, most Black Brits willing moved to the UK from Africa and the Caribbean. Whereas in the US we literately built our country and we actually descend from slaves here. So for us, learning where we come from is vital. But why would an African immigrant living in the UK need to know about British slavery? If you want to know who you are, just ask your African grandparents. You have the luxury of doing that--unlike my people.

      The Cass:
A good number of black Brits are descended from slaves who were brought to British colonies like the Carribean. Read up some more on black British history to find that out. Just because England didn't have slavery literally in its backyard, dosen't mean things were any better for them
than it was for us. Just because black British folks don't have the exact same history as us black Americans concerning slavery, that dosen't make their history with it any less legit, and it's ridiculous to say that it isn't. Obviously you didn't watch this video, which tells about the history of slavery in Britain.

Your comment implies that you do not fully understand the Slave Trade and our shared history - Afro-American , Afro -Caribbean, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Columbian etc. I wish I knew who my Great, Great grandparents were and from where they originated, but the Sugar, Cotton and Cocoa Plantation records only classify them by shipment and description (male, female, child, approx age) rarely by origin. Most of the records are in the British Archives or in the private collections of the Slave owners decendants.

@@martinacrafton1252 I completely understand the shared history that we have. But the difference is, my DIRECT ancestors fought and died in every American war, including the civil war. Juneteenth is a part of African American history that resonates with us in a way that you could never understand, no matter how many books you read or episodes of Roots you watch on TV. We've had black neighborhoods burned to the ground and we've been terrorized by hate groups like the KKK on camera. So let's be clear, sharing some ancestry from the same continent (that is very vague, by the way) is not the same thing as being a direct descendent of a slave who actually built a country like America or Haiti. That's all I am saying. The fact of the matter is, most Black Brits are immigrants who willingly moved to England from Africa. Nobody made you move there. So why complain about the unfairness of your environment? You are fully aware of your history as most of you still have your African names. And you can also go back to Africa to see your family members whenever you want a real history lesson. Those of you who come from the Caribbean come from countries that are predominately black like Jamaica. Those countries have black faces on their money. You have an indenity that my people here have never had. So I respectfully disagree with your stance. And I think if you're going to compare a Afro-Columbian to a Creole person, perhaps you should do a little more research of your own. They're culture and DNA is quite different. The Creole people in America are very proud of their French heritage. And Afro-Latinos are mixed with Spanish DNA.

The Roman empire was clearly multi-cultural - although the vast majority of Roman "Citizens" were of Italian origin, but it is simply untrue that a Black Sailor was lynched in 1919. Charles Wooten was part of a gang that got into a fight with Swedish Sailors over cigarettes, they puled out knives and Razors and then cut the throat of a police officer that tried to break the fight up. The gang then fled to their boarding house and when the police arrived in force to arrest them Wooten shot 3 policemen before fleeing. He was chased by a mob enraged at the shooting of the officers and then was either pushed into the docks or jumped in to try and evade the mob. Sadly he died. This information is easy to find in newspaper records and it is difficult to understand how a well known historian could make such a blunder and claim that he was lynched?

if kids are learning about British history in school, they should be learning about important parts the history of Britain that has shaped the country. There are different levels that pupils learn history, for example GCSE or A level. It is not possible at any level to have time to teach about every different era, or subject in history. Obviously only certain time periods, subjects can be taught. For example the 1st World War and it causes, the Reform Laws in 19th century Britain, ( including the extension of the voting franchise, and abolition of slavery). These are important parts the history of Britain, that have greatly influence the country today. Its is important for people living in the country to know these things. I was at school a long time ago, but one of the subjects we studied in history was the triangular trade across the Atlantic between which included the trading in black slaves from Africa and Europe and America. There are lots of other subjects in British history that could be mentioned, but at the end of the day the syllabus should really be about the subjects that have the greatest influence, in a historical context on Britain. There is not enough time in any history syllabus to go into details of individual lives whether they be black or any other ethnicity. Unless they had a major influence on British history.
I dont know how schools are expected to fit everything in , including sections on black history. There is only so much British history they can fit in to the curriculum, so inevitably some aspects will be left out.
