I know you enjoy slowly learning the game on your own, but a couple helpful tips:
1. Finish doing the starter quests. You don’t have to build a base, the starter quests are just to teach you the mechanics. So place down a block, upgrade it, then place a campfire. Completing them rewards you some levels and points to invest in the character. After that it will direct you to the nearest trader
2. Pick up everything and if you run out of storage scrap the items for the raw materials. They become very necessary
3. Spend some time playing with the building blocks. You can place frames that can be picked back up which are very useful for exploring houses. Just place ladder frames. Or build a hatch in a door way, pop it up, and hit the zombies while they try to break it down.
4. The icons on the left indicate things like a concussion. For a concussion you need pain killers to treat it. You will slowly learn what is needed, but stockpile FIRST AID BANDAGES and FIRST AID KITS. They provide health regeneration and clear up most status affects

This is a good game. Yeah it is more fun with people a bit time consuming but so worth it. Definitely would like to see a series on it
You should really try and complete those quests in the top right. They will lead you to a trader eventually and it's best to setup close to a trader for jobs. Also there is a map (M). Doing trader jobs can get you good weapons. I also suggest getting a bicycle to move around a lot faster. Eventually you can get a gyrocopter

I would love to see him play this and try to make it past a month in game. I do not care if he plays alone or with someone. Bet he can't do it.

I didnt finish watching the video when i started typing this but this game is AMAZING however very difficult if you arent cautious. That said early game try to complete your "tutorial" objectives as you get 5 skill points. Its always good to invest in miner 69er which does more damage to resource giving you stuff faster and motherload increases how much you get when you get resources.
every location has a difficulty rating from 1 to 5 skulls with biome modifiers. Early game (before day 14) you probably dont want to do anything higher than 3 skulls if you are not confidant in your combat abilities. Loot also scales with difficulty.
When you are trying to get resources there are dead shrubs that give wood quickly and as you saw the stones on the ground. A bone knife is 5 bones and a great early game weapon as it deals bleed.
as far as healing goes you need medical banages which are obviously different from bandages. if you dont have any afflication you just naturally heal.
when you open inventory items press R and the WHOLE THING gets transfered to your inventory. Your inventory also has hot options at the top of it that each do different things with hot keys.
Bow and arrow is a great early game investment so search every nest you find and when you do have a stone axe try to spend at least have the durabilty on a tree and the other half on a stone. You can repair every tool.
if you find a book GRAB IT. it doesnt matter if you think you have read it before just grab it and read it again. Most of your skills and rafting is heavly affected by books and it provides raw exp.
every single POI has a "preset path" that you can take to get in and they all have an "end" and at the end is the loot room for any poi higher than 0 skulls.
you did get infected. That can get cured with antibiotics or honey. You can find honey by breaking tree stumps (seperate tile from trees.) and at honey farm stands in citys.
key loot crate types are Poppin Pills, Shamway, Shotgun messiah, and a tool one that i cant remember the name of but its something or other tool.
you can make pipe guns.
one last thing. HEAD SHOTS DO DEAL INCREASED DAMAGE!!!
This game uses a custom engine. only the console version used unity.

@SkyesToo The tutorial gives 4 skill points once completed, trader quests (under trader jobs) are OP, you get more skill books of what you spec into with skill points. Nighttime makes zombies faster. Aim for headshots to kill zombies faster

Pressing R takes all loot out of stuff you search. Hold shift and click to send single item to inventory or storage. When you get close to a house the red skulls are the difficulty. 1 skull is easy and it goes up to 6 for insane

Man, I enjoy you figuring things out. However, if I may assist with just a few pointers.
The skulls that you see indicate the threat level of the area you are in, I believe. Also, please find a spot and set up camp. In about 2 days you will thank me. Oh.. and use a house and make your defenses. You ain't seen the worst of those noisy fellas. The dogs are the least of your worries. GOOD LUCK 😅
