I am currently feeling pretty dumb. Just spray painted a NASCAR model with Tamiya gloss acrylic and Color Levelling Thinner. Mixed up the paint - check! Everything ready - check! Needle ready - check! Put on face mask - check! Begin spraying. Funny, I can smell the fumes. After finishing and putting things away I realised that I hadn't put on the mask filters! Chump!
Great demo Gunney Kreg! A couple of things I like to do is percolate the brush several times with fresh thinner/cleaner and I never pull a dirty needle back through the seal, I always pull it out through the front to extend the life of the seals.👍
Thanks Allan, I had not thought about taking the needle from the front. Good info! The Iwata always will come out. that Point Zero is worn at the trigger and the seals at the air valve lets it stick and paint will leak back into the brush after some use. That was probably the worst I ever had to remove it. I will try out the front next time. Thanks!
I saw a report by a hobby shop youtube channel from Canada that Tamiya rattle can paint is being ordered off the market in Canada (for unspecified reasons). That's probably going to happen more and more over time, with these environmental mandates that keep expanding. The US EPA is bound to hear of this, and investigate it themself. Learning to airbrush might become more important to modelers.
I just got my first 2 bottles of MCW paint.B5 Chrysler blue for my 1969 charger.i,ve never air brushed before.can you do a vid on how to mix the MCW paint also thinning it.what air pressure etc.
Awesome video Kreg! Lots of great information... I use mainly acrylics and it is not as forgiving as lacquers when it comes to cleaning but if you get the bottom of the cup and needle are clean a deep clean is a once a week thing as well... I have a 6 Gaahleri brushes and love them all! I also have that new Black Widow from HF and it is a great fun also. I enjoy the GHAD-68's for 90% of everything. The swallowtail is a awesome metallic brush. You will like them both my friend! LLAP 🖖
Nice walk through Kreg, I have a few Gaahleri brushes and love them all! I’d be happy to lend you my trigger one if you want to test it out before buying.
Very nice video with great info. I only started air brushing about 2 years ago. I now prefer it over a rattle can. So much better for controlling the amount of spray. I use primarily craft paints & with my home made cleaners & thinners, I rarely dis-assemble any of them for cleaning. I always flush them out as soon as I spray the last coat. Another thing I have done is to polish the needle, wipe clean then apply needle lube or mineral oil. So fat, this process has worked great for me.
Nice, never thought about polishing the needle, good tip, they are rough feeling. Also carb cleaner works good, I use to have a huge 5gl. pale of lacquer thinner worked good till gone. I normally use the Mr color airbrush cleaner or Tamiyas. I usually do about a month with the iwata brush. The Point Zero hardly ever, and it's starting to get worn out . Have a good one Charlie!
@@kregskorner8851 I just got some carb cleaner, plus I have a gal of lacquer thinner that I run a bit thru after several uses. Thanks & as always, I look forward to your videos🙋♂️
Hi Kreg. I been a sub for quite a long time and this is the first comment. Just watched this video and I had a Paasche Talon dual action for 15 to 20 fish years. Little use only to paint interiors. I did try to paint a body with some success. That last time I used it to paint a body it didn't flow paint. I cleaned it 3 times to no avail. Well file G it went and I got a Gaahleri ghad98 trigger gun. Man what an awesome airbrush. I don't even come close to experience of you but I laid down some good paint and clear coat with that gun. Trigger style for me is the way to go. Great control over the button type. All the best to you.
Thanks John, the point zero brush leaks back and always have to pull the needle out like that, this was the worst case. Love the Iwata, though the point zero replacement will be a Gaahleri have heard nothing but good things. Have a good one John!
@@kregskorner8851 Thanks Kreg. I do love that gaahleri 98 way better that my paasche. I love your models you build. I just got the premier issue of the auto modeller and I saw your T-BIRD. Beautiful car.
Great Tutorial on the airbrush. I pretty much always use Tamiya Fine primer froma can but I pretty much always use an airbrush on cars, doing trucks I like Tamiya spry cans. I'm looking at a 0.5 for doing them
🤔 I wonder sometimes if rattle cans are really economical. Seems to me they put out a lot more paint than you really need; and it seems like you can’t get too many uses out of one. About the only thing I rattle can is primers, but that’s about to change too. I bought some Mr. Surfacer 1500 Black for my airbrush. 😉 Time for me to break mine down and clean it before I start my next build. Peace and love.
Question? What do you use to get the adhesive off the paint after bare metal foiling? Also what wax do you use for waxing/polishing for the final polishing ?
nice syphon feeds little acetone and paint thinner will do the trick yeah i get it you wanna be spending time time w/your baby and not cleaning😁🤩great vid dou thx😂😋scooter😎
Thanks for the info, but I'm not sold yet. Mine is still in the box. It still looks like too much work. I have a local place selling Tamiya spray paints and since I switched my paint has really looked better
Just a head-up. if you are in Canada, Tamiya spray paints have just been ordered off the market by Canada Environmental. Shops can sell what they have, but they can no longer get more from distributors, and none of the product can be imported into Canada. The US EPA will no doubt hear of this, and investigate. Better get out the airbrush! That Canada news report from last week has me much more interested in Kreg's video.
I get it, it took a long time for me after having my first brush. Used it on and off and back to the Testors cans, tried a few more times still no. Once I bought a gravity feed was much more enjoyable. Appreciate your input Sam.
Cool video covering the basics for everyone. Greatly appreciate it!

That's the way it goes, happened to me a time ago back neck strap never was connected properly after removing the mask I thought that was smart lol
I’ve forgotten to turn on my exhaust fans before. Now I turn it on BEFORE I turn on the AB compressor.

Nice tutorial on the airbrush. Lots of great information. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Michael, I should have just started with spraying first and clean up last lol
This was a great tutorial. I totally froze one the last time I used mine. I thought I had it cleaned but no. Thank you for sharing this
