I had a 2003 expedition I didn't have to remove the steering wheel to replace the turn signal switch. Maybe that's how they say to do it in the books but I never had to do that. Oh well I'd learned a new way to it LOL
I have an issue with intermittent back signals... I was thinking the same thing..there screws underneath the covers that you can easily get to without removing the steering column and then just take off the whole cover and replace the switch... Well as long as the airbag don't pop...lol... I'll just disconnect the battery
I own 2004 expedition and like others have said you don't have to remove the steering wheel. However the 2004 expedition you need to remove the wheel, because of the way those shroud plastics parts are in two parts not 3.
I would take the steering wheel off. I had to replace the shaft that the shift lever is pinned to. I didn't take the steering wheel off and forced the plastic peices off and back on now I have issues with the cruise and heater control working intermittently. So going back to the last thing I touched I just, for the heck of it with head lights off, I put on brights and both worked. Shut the car off they won't work until I put brights on again. 75% of the time that works. Point is I think I did something to the wires, possibly to directional switch when forcing covers off and on. IDK. Pretty coincidental though and weird how both cruise and heater controls will work together and not work.
Hey I followed the procedure to a T.I tested my turn signal stalk for lights,turn signals,and wipers all worked fine.I then disconnected battery again and waited approximately 15 minutes.I then re-installed the steering wheel re-attached the the 4 connectors(horn-red,steering wheel-red,and the two airbag gray/yellow and white/yellow.Now my key goes in ignition but will not turn on.The steering wheel will not move in either direction.The battery has been re connected and the chimes are making sound.Any ideas???

Was gonna bring my 2006 in due to high beams and switch gradually failing to turn them on over a few months. Looks ez enough to do.

It can also be done without removing the steering wheel.
Bunch of other videos out there where it shows you do not have to go through all the work of removing steering wheel.
