I just think it gets the emotion across much better than saying ‘iih’ or whatever so I just keep doing it even though people make fun of me sometimes :D
I guess it is closer to throwing up than our German "Iiiiiih". Many US emotional sounds imitate the feeling better, methinks. E.g. "Yuck!" or "to gulp".

Sorry I just laugh a lot that's just how I am🙃😂 So I think I know how you felt😅
I spent 10 months in Australia in 2016/17 and let me tell you, to this day sometimes I can't remember a German word when I'm telling people something. And I've been home for 3 years already. Your video just made me realise how open I've become when it comes to accepting "weird" stuff. By the way, your German is really good, especially how you were able to pronounce "Eichhörnchen". Hoping you don't have too much of a re-entry shock.
I grew up in Germany as a foreign student as well. A lot of things you are mentioning here resonate with me as well. I find it very amusing. I really miss the Cafe/Kuchen in the afternoon and the culture of less TV and more personal interaction. Since you are back to the US, you may want to clue everyone in on what you are doing in the US and how life is going on in Virginia a little more. I know nowadays not much is happening as everyone is sheltered in place, but nevertheless it would be interesting. Keep up the awesome job.
Your German is amazing, Montana! Reading the comments I stay here with the one and only question: Why do so many people apparently feel the reflex to compare the German comments with aggressive behaviour using nazi vocabulary? I mean...why? And if one feels it necessary: Why not just give a 👍🏼 to one of the first 5 comments saying the same thing...or refer to one of the >10 other clips where themselves or others say the same thing? 🤦 Not to forget; Which metaphor do you use to comment, let's say, Portuguese or Russian comments? I for one learn a lot from culture comparison and culture experience in any direction.
You're the first American I heard pronounce "Eichhörnchen" correct. And the eagle / Igel thing was so cute. Just amazing! I'm not quite sure whether I like Igel or not. They eat my cats' food. But on the other hand, hedgehogs are lovely animals, and real creatures of the night. They only come out of their hiding place after dark, and if you have the patience to be silent and watch them, it's really rewarding.
I've only seen celery once at Aldi and I was so happy. The checker actually asked me, "What do you do with that?" !!! I didn't tell her I took it home, cut it, and stuck it directly into the peanut butter jar. I am fascinated with hedgehogs in Germany too. A huge one crossed the street in front of me last week. I caught one once but it chewed its way to freedom. Re: accepting compliments. Wow, I didn't realize even school-age Germans cannot accept compliments. I know it's true of the grown ups. That deer in headlights look, you mimicked it perfectly. I've almost completely given up on complimenting Germans. Sometimes I do out of habit though and they just look uncomfortable and don't say anything.

Weird, I'm not German but I've never had a shower that didn't fully close with a glass door. My grandma's old house did have a curtain and I found it do gross when it touched me haha, seems way more annoying to keep clean than glass.
In Germany we just don't randomly talk to people - except we are sitting next to each other in public transportation or want to know something from them like time, where we find a shop or street or similar things. I think the girl with the same shirt gave you a strange look because you just talked to her randomly.
I think the girl with the sweater was weirded out or just surprised because it's not that common to go up to a stranger and talk to them in that manner here in Germany.. that's definitely something we should try to change! Loved the video and everything was very interesting :)

8:20 the reason they have those is because the water in Europe is kind of hard which means if you leave it to air dry the chalk/limestone deposits on stuff.
Funny thing and a running gag in my family since our family holiday in america a few years ago: When English people(strangers) meet you and comment with "good for you, enjoy" they mean it while the german translation "schön für dich, viel spaß" is almost always used ironically or sarcastically.

I think Germans experience the same thing you had with hedgehogs but with squirrels :) I see them very rarely so I get rly excited when I see one, also they are very cute imo (the red european ones at least hehe)

Never seen a hedgehog--they do look cute, but squirrels are not ugly---they are cute too! Very cute! You do have a great smile and laugh--a winning personality for sure (I found you through Feli, German Girl In America.
I eat Sellerie raw too & I’m German. I don’t like it when it is cooked.

You had Italian? At my German high school we have English as the first language, Latin or French as the second and Spanish optional.

Haha I can relate! I was an exchange student in the US in 2017 and ever since I’m back in Germany I say ‘eww’ aaaallll the time and everyone thinks it’s weird.
I moved to Munich in 2012 (grew up in Arizona) and went through pretty much the same things. Culture shock was crazy at first but I've gotten used to it after 8 years, lol. Hope you and your family are doing well. Love the videos, keep doing what you're doing! Also, nice Zeppelin shirt. 🔥
I am Austrian and I am also a person who smiles a lot, either just bc I am happy or uncomfortable or just all the time lol. And people who don't know me very well always ask me why I smile so much and even my friends will sometimes make funny comments about how often I laugh.
Hoping you don't have too much of a re-entry shock.
did you just call squirrels ugly,
dislike just for that ;P /s
Not to forget; Which metaphor do you use to comment, let's say, Portuguese or Russian comments? I for one learn a lot from culture comparison and culture experience in any direction.
Hallo, liebe Montana,
You're the first American I heard pronounce "Eichhörnchen" correct.
Igel wäre hedgehog, soweit ich weiß. Eagle wäre Adler
Hi Montana, thank you for bringing smiles to Germany. Never stop smiling. Best wishes from a German who stumbled upon your channel :)
Smiling in reaction of not understanding is probably intercultural.
They do not have a Duschkopf in the USA just only tube where all the water comes out mostly ?
Then you freeze in the shower and never get wet.
Never quit the smiling. I have no clue why someone should feel puzzled by that. Maybe they are just insecure.
„gross“ in Austrian German is „grausig“ so I think that’s a pretty accurate translation!
I learned the hard way that Germans don't say "brrr" when they're cold XD
American do say that?
Yes they do
ChexMix why?😂 what happened?😅😂
Lol i do sometimes xD
@@ms.sunshine9160 Let me guess: It had something to do with horseback riding ;-)
I assure you, after you went the girl probably turned to her classmate and said with the same facial expression: "Das war lustig"

hey Montana! i was born in switzerland and i still live here... the people here are like in germany or even worse when it comes to smiling... they never smile and i hate this because i am just like you! a happy person who smiles a lot and i love to talk to strangers.. but sadly, they always think that im crazy or evil.... like what????!!!!! thats just very very sad..so please, never loose your happiness because Europe is a very depressed continent. everybody is sooo sooo borring and sad... i dont think this is in our human nature.. when we were born, we already had this positive energy inside us! so, in my opinion, Europe is a prison mentality.. we just cant be ourselfs and thats very sad and not human... i mean, who told us that we cant talk and smile to strangers?! we are all human so we have to share our energy! im originaly portuguese, my parents are both portuguese and there in Portugal the people are more open and friendly and smiley because its normal! BUT, even there you can still see the European mentality because Portugal is still in Europe... and i dont like that european mentality... i HATE it haha!! im just like an American. HUMAN! europe people are like programmed robots because i mean, seriourls? 24 hours every day depressed and sad?! so, who is fake? definitely Europe and NOT the USA. im thinkin about moving to the USA one day. i would love to meet you here in switzerland or germany.. just text me here on youtube message and i could show you around basel switzerland if you like?
Weird, I'm not German but I've never had a shower that didn't fully close with a glass door. My grandma's old house did have a curtain and I found it do gross when it touched me haha, seems way more annoying to keep clean than glass.
You just put it in the washing machine from time to time.
In Germany we just don't randomly talk to people - except we are sitting next to each other in public transportation or want to know something from them like time, where we find a shop or street or similar things. I think the girl with the same shirt gave you a strange look because you just talked to her randomly.
hahaha the sweater thing is common in germany too, some ppl aren’t just „cool“ enough to get it😅😂
I think the girl with the sweater was weirded out or just surprised because it's not that common to go up to a stranger and talk to them in that manner here in Germany.. that's definitely something we should try to change! Loved the video and everything was very interesting :)
Imagine smiling and nodding to someone who’s asking you a question 😂😂
Americans: Taking photos left right and center.
Meanwhile in Germany - DSGVO: You stop right there!
In austria one would probably say "grauslich" for gross
Grinding, ekelhaft
Ranzig
The way you said "Eichhörnchen" was soooooo good! Normally english speaking people struggle so much saying "Eichhörnchen".
When Armstrong landed on the moon he said, because he likes german hedgehogs so much "The Igel has landed." ;-)

lol like some things u expalined i actually can relate to as a german for expamle the thing with the sweater or the word "gross"
this is like normal to me lmao but girl celery with peanut butter is too much :D
The shower squeegee is definitely not my favorite part lol but it is so satisfying how it's the perfect size for the (small haha) glass shower panes - I'm also an American student in Germany right now.
Also your German/translation processing out loud is so refreshing especially compared to other UA-camrs who are like afraid to use their German (and I totally relate to switching my German/English words)
Every german watching, trying to say "ew" at the end :D
Literally everything sounds so relatable. :D
I am swiss and I never thought that swiss and American culture would be so similar😂 I could relate to nearly all of them
I find it's so cute how you are not sure about anything you said but everything was right ☺️
me and my friends actually say "ew" a lot and not really "ih" even tho we’re german😂
The sweater thing is funny.
Super likable, especially when combined with your constant smiling. :)
the girl not smiling could be that she couldn't understand you. even if we have English as a subject since first grade there are a lot of germans who absolutely suck at English lool
It's so nice that you say thank you to your teacher, omg!!
Squirrels are cute though!
smiling and being open and friendly is something we germans can learn from you. I hope you you never change that.
I used to eat fennel raw at school.. my friends looked at me and thought that was weird too :D (I'm German btw)
Lol i totally relate to u when u went over to the girl with the same sweeter 😂😂👍 some Germans dont really understand our jokes or they dont get it, it's not because some are unfriendly , its just the joke gets lost in translation sometimes 😂😂😂
I‘m from Germany but I‘m smiling too if someone talk with me 😂
Montana, I enjoy learning about the culture in Western Europe. I live in the USA, and I've never been to Europe.
I would say: That's so gross - Das ist so widerlich. Feels the same to me.
Wild hedgehogs mostly have diseases and fleas. As a german myself I learned to never touch a wild hedgehog. When you need to (because he's stuck or something) you always have to wear really thick gloves
Or be really gentle. And it doesn't hurt so much when they are little.
During my exchange year in the US I had the same experience as you with the hedgehogs but with squirrels 😂
You have a very lovely smile and on top it is really infectious! Es macht dich sehr sympathisch^^ It’ s also one of the reasons I watch your videos. I don’t know why, but while watching your videos I kinda feel good. It’s fun. There also might be some home sickness involved, though. I’m German, but I live in Japan for over 5 years now. Ich bin gespannt auf deine Videos aus Amerika. Alles Gute, hab einen schönen Tag. Tschüss 👋🏻
Igel=Singular Igel=Plural
rather der Igel - die Igel
Ein Igel - mehrere Igels
8:20 the reason they have those is because the water in Europe is kind of hard which means if you leave it to air dry the chalk/limestone deposits on stuff.
Personally I don't say "iihh" but rather "ugh". Don't know where I picked that up. "iihh" is something kids would say.
Funny thing and a running gag in my family since our family holiday in america a few years ago: When English people(strangers) meet you and comment with "good for you, enjoy" they mean it while the german translation "schön für dich, viel spaß" is almost always used ironically or sarcastically.
I definitely say "eww" more often than "Ihh" or "Bah" xD
no one from an english speaking country i saw or heard has ever done a better job in spelling "Eichhörnchen" Well done!!!!!!
Wait. I lived abroad in the US for a year and I thought the celery snack was called "ants on a walk". :D
I’ve always heard it called “ants on a log”
I really thought this was an April fool, especially when she added the resins 😂
Hahaha that’s so funny!
Hey Montana, I hope you're doing well back home in the states! But please be sure: you're missed here in germany (sorry for my bad english, I wanted to say, that we are missing you and it would be a pleasure and honour to have you back amongst us!).
