Alot of work for a 3ft move. What a patient husband.
The thing I love about plants/trees, is that they are very resilient and forgiving. If you don’t like where they are, move them. If you don’t like their size, trim them. Great job. Everything looks great.😊👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you so much! That is so true, I am positive this tree will do just fine! Thank you for watching!
Soil and Margaritas It will be fine, and you’re welcome. I’ve move trees in the middle of summer before and they are fine. Great job again.
@@derrongoodengardenandlifes8655 Thank you!
Not always, u can kill them by not doing it right
You shouldn’t even had to address the haters before hand. They act like they themselves know it all. But the best way to learn is from experience and actually doing the job. I’m a huge fan of your husband, so supportive. 💜
He is truly amazing! Thank you for watching!
Lifting one side and packing soil under it alternately was genius way to lift a heavy object
Your husband is a hero and he must love you lots & lots! That was a lot of work to put into moving a tree he hates :-) I moved a redbud in March, same sort of size, but I brutalized it a lot more (ie it was almost a bareroot by the time I got it out of the soil) and it survived. You guys did a fabulous job of keeping the rootball intact so I am sure your tree will make it.
Oh gosh I hope so, I was already feeling sad seeing how he was chopping all those roots, that things was massive!
Great partnership. There was so much more than just a tree transplant in this video.
Couldn't agree more! 😘
Holy crap!!!!!! Rob would have said cut it down! Your husband is a champ cause even I would have given up on doing that! Can't wait to see what's next!
lol I was just thinking last week how I thought I could do this by myself...oi!
Great job, I'm just moving a fir tree in a very wet, muddy England. Using the plank's as levers may seem obvious, but I hadnt thought of it, so thanks a lot, it will help me no end!
WOW! What a lot of work! Great job! Now I have to go to a more recent video and see how it fares.😬 Thank you to your hubby! What good man!
You did a fine job taking out that 🌳 tree
Thank you for sharing this. The tree is beautiful.
I love that tree! Thank you for watching!
This music felt like I watched a miracle before my eyes! As soon as the tree is placed into the new location the music becomes climactic - Spot on! I really Enjoyed this video - great work done by both of you!
Glad you enjoy it!
Awesome job you two! I LOVE your gardening spirit. I just moved 2 birch trees anda video about a month ago? and I felt like a horrible garden planner, but seeing you take the challenge on of a much larger root ball?!? You guys rocked it.
And P.S. screw the hater comments, 9 times out of then those people live in apartments and don't even have a garden let alone a container full of herbs. You were so delicate and precise in moving it, better then any professional. Good job! 😍🥰
Thank you so much! We did our best for sure!
Well done, you both did a wonderful job.
Thank you!
Wow, I'm impressed, that's a lot of work to move that tree, great job! I'm working on a full sun garden bed. I look forward to watching more of your videos. 🌿
Thanks for watching Linda!
@@SoilandMargaritas My pleasure!
Fantastic job! A lot of hard work!! 🌱🌳🌿
Yes it was! SO happy it is done thou :)
Well done guys 👍
Thank you for this video...very informative.
You got it. Thank you for watching!
That was extreme in the heat! But the teamwork was definitely a joy to watch
Thank you! It was a lot of work!
Amazing! !
Awesome team work! 🏆Beautiful tree🌳That was clearly tree surgery.👩⚕️ 😊Thank you for always sharing your content. I'm here to learn📝, thanks for teaching 🤗 Blessings 💫
Thank you so much Lisa!
Great job...looks great ❤️❤️
Thanks for watching Carol!
So sweet! What teamwork. This is an inspiration. I have a redbud that needs to move, but most of the Internet sites I go to tell me that it cannot be done, usually. Bravo!
Ours was a "small" tree and I had only put it there the year before, I would say try it!
Well done guys you’ve done a grand job xx
Thank you! It was a lot of work but we got it done!
Great job on a big task but doable with teamwork, I'll try this tomorrow, wish me luck!
I am doing the same thing with a fig tree. WOW you guys dug up a huge root ball. Good Work
Neat job. I've tried this before and always made a mess of things. Never thought of backfilling the hole as you remove the root ball so it doesn't keep falling back in. Here's my tip of the hat for your patience and technique:)
Great team work !!!
My goodness, you did it!! So much easier watching someone else doing all the work 😁
I know 😂😂😂 Thank goodness is DONE!
Thanks for sharing :)!
Nurseries fail to do an important and simple thing to avoid losing trees to shock. They fail to flag the south side of the tree before they dig it up. If you flag the south side of the tree before you dig it up and are careful to keep that orientation when you plant it you will suffer a lot fewer deaths due to shock.
..
Well done! It’s definitely going to grow well at its new place.
Unfortunately, the tree did not make it the following year :(
@@SoilandMargaritas it is very admirable that you are so honest and told the truth about the outcome so people can really learn from you and from your experience. Many youtubers pretending to be professional and "master gardeners" hide it when something like this happens. People need to know that this is risky thing and success rate is not 100% disregarding how well you do things.
@@ReyderRisco I talked with more detail in one of the videos the next summer, I knew it was risky and a lot of people told me how picky redbuds were but I did it anyways, sometimes you win some and sometimes things just die
Super job done. I can’t believe how big a rootball you guys got out. Incredible teamwork especially since your hub isn’t even a fan of the tree.
Thanks 👍
good job 👏 👍 may god bless both of you
Great job!! Don't worry about negative people on the internet..they should be on your page if they don't like your content
Wow! That was a lot of work.. great job 👍🏼👏.. awesome.. my husband would just cut it down..
Thanks for watching!
High five to hubby 👋🏻 - my hubby is not a fan of anything gardening!! You did a great job and I hate you had to say something to the nay sayers out there. Your garden is just gorgeous just like you. You have inspired this Hoosier in so many ways. Thank you!! 😘
Thank you so much Kim! He is awesome and I am thankful that he helps me in the garden with my "small" projects.
I’m glad you asked people not to be negative. What I see of your yard is meticulous and yo I work great together.
“Team work”. 💕
For sure! But for this one I felt like I was the water girl lol
I've dug big trees and moved before its the worst kind of work YOU DID A FANTASTIC JOB.
Thank you!
Thank you. I only use what I have so this is so helpful
Girl, you are brave...gardening in chanclas. Your husband did a great job, he didn't shortcut the job by just yanking out the tree. I had a redbud that got verticillium wilt after 10 years in the ground. It bloomed beautifully this year, but within 2 weeks all the leaves browned and crisped. Poor guy didn't make it. Fingers crossed for yours. Great team work!
P.S. OMG...his patience!!!!
OMG Yes, I cannot cover my feet when it so hot outside, so chanclas it is!
thats a big move to save a tree
love it
i have to move a hibiscus, when it was 3feet tall took 4hrs, now its 12ft
hello fun times
Wow I guess i won't be doing that! Now for Plan B. 😀
Firstly, great job, you guys make a great team! Secondly, the heart that you put into your garden shows. It's beautiful.
Aww Thank you so much!
Thank you for this video this just inspired me to just hire someone 😆
lol That's awesome!
Inspiring!
Nor so much the moving of the tree but in the two of you....
Don’t let the hateful comments get to you! You’re the best
Thank you! 😘
Decent job.
Thank you!
You guys did a great job. I have a Forest pansy redbud that needs to be moved to a more shady area. It’s in full sun now. So my question is when is the best time to dig it up and relocate. I live in zone 6B. Thanks for your video on this.🦋💕
Spring and fall are good times for moving/transplanting trees, make sure you get help and get as big as a root ball as you can! Good luck!
Well this is the exact tree my wife wants me to move just a few feet. Tell your husband I feel his pain :) Great video. Glad I found it b4 I started project.
Update: 4 5 hrs. Smaller tree but by myself. Three roots 4-6 inches diameter and many smaller roots. Done. Tired
Well done!
Good job. We have 2 sycamores on a hill in our back yard area and they need to moved because they’ll be a danger to the house in a few years. We don’t just want to kill them so we’re learning how to move them
LOL you got so lucky there’s not one rock in that dirt, and your husband was right it wasn’t that easy. But nice video thank you for changing my mind LOL
The timing of your video couldn't be more perfect.
I have been avoiding moving a newly planted apple tree (earlier this spring) to allow more space for future growth of a 'Limelight' Hydrangea I purchased several weeks ago.
It should be fairly easy given how recently I planted it. Our weather has finally turned a corner, in the 70s this week here in zone 4 b.
Your "small tree" seemed pretty big after 5 hours of digging, right? Oh my word.
I absolutely love your Redbud tree. The shape is beautiful and the multi-stems are so interesting. I bought a Redbud tree several years ago when it was little more than a switch. I've neglected it so the shape is odd. There's been dieback so it now has multiple stems. Mine is in the shade. I love the heart-shape leaves and the amazing color in the spring.
Did you add some Bio-tone to the planting hole?
Was that a pipe I saw? Scary to run into power or gas lines when digging.
I'm curious why your husband kept adding dirt under the tree. Was that to help elevate it out of the hole so it wasn't a back breaker to lift out?
Again, I think my tree move should go pretty well that I can handle it alone. I hope so.
Kate, Yes, the "small tree" project turned into a huge deal (in my eyes) after 2 hours of digging lol My hubby started by digging the root ball around the tree carefully, then, he started to lift it slowly by adding soil underneath it to elevate the root ball, since the new place was just feet away, we wanted to just roll the root ball into the new hole, at the very end, you can see where he dug out a very small trench to sorta help us with the last push, that thing was HEAVY! I did not add any soil amendments when I first planted this tree last year and I didn't either this time. That pipe was carrying power cables ( we think ) to our garage, our home is a fixer upper so we are slowly getting to know this place finding little surprises like that.
CHU -GOT- IT- TOYOTA!!
I ADMIRE YOU BOTH SO VERY VERY MUCH FOR YOUR WONDERFUL TEAM WORK AND YOUR LOVING HUSBAND, IT WARMS MY HEART ♥️ TO SEE HUSBAND AND WIFE WORK TOGETHER, AND YOUR HUSBAND IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE JUST LIKE YOU, IT WAS SO MUCH FUN WATCHING YOU GUYS AND TEACHING ME, THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!
Our pleasure!
Would love to see an update! Nice video.
Well,, my tree did not make it, on a recent video I talk about how only one of the trunks (multi trunk) was flowering, then that one branck started dying as well, as I dug out the tree, I noticed some disease was taking it... so it could be that it was going to die anyways or I have no clue.
@@SoilandMargaritas Oh no! Yes it might have happened anyways. The transplanting looked like it could not have been done better. Thanks for the reply.
Great job! How did you do this in flip flops? You guys are awesome!!👍🌝🌸
Good question! As I was watching the video I realized I should have had some sort of protection lol It was so hot thou, I just go to my good old flip flops.
My husband and I just transplanted a redbud that was right next to the house. I’m talking the football was 3 feet away from the cement to our basement so we had no other choice but to move it. I almost broke the shovel when trying to use leverage to loosen it up. Too bad I didn’t think if backfilling or planks. Then my husband came to help and just tore the roots apart. No matter how nuch I said “it needs those roots” he just kept rocking it and cutting the roots and pulling. Completely bare foot with barely any roots when we moved it downhill away from the house. Fingers crossed but I don’t have high hopes, so I’m looking up other redbuds to buy and put in its place when it prices to be dead next spring. Sometimes I wish my husband would listen to me. Like the short weeping Cherry tree needing to be closer to the garden as An accent plant, but instead it’s in the middle of the front yard. Question: what was the pipe running through the new hole that you dug? Was that water? Gas? Is it okay since it’s so close to the surface? Thank you for the video and ideas!!
Hello, moving that tree was such a project for both of us, I am not sure about the pipes... we think is electrical but not quite sure.
Key takeaways from this:
keep the same orientation it was in before
Do not fill the hole with water to avoid rotting the roots
Don't add any fertilizers
Compact the soil when backfilling
Optional: Add Mulch around the tree in a flat manner to avoid water running off
Thanks .removing a tree next week. Your video taught me all i need to do it..
Good luck!
Your husband is a good man.
Totally agree!
Just watched your vid and since it’s been a year already, how is the tree doing? For what you had to work with you two did a great job!! 👏🏼
The tree died, there was some mushy-browning in the main trunks from the inside out so it I replaced it. SO MUCH work but we learned a thing or two.
Ohhh so sorry to hear that! I tried to move a avacado tree and it didn’t survive either. Keep posting your informative and interesting videos. Thank you for you hard works!!
@@SoilandMargaritas what would you have done differently to make sure it survived?
@@SoilandMargaritas I thought it might die when I saw you put it into all that sitting water. The tree was sitting too low and in very wet soil. This caused rot in the tree. Add shock from the transplant and it’s an uphill battle. Too bad it was a beautiful little tree.
@@kialbonetti1997yep way too much water for it to sit in compounded with transplant shock. That was alot of work to move it literally a foot or two over! Would have left it where it was.
My garden is located in Zone 5 in Central Indiana... What big projects you have going on in the garden now?
How is it now? I’m in Carmel, and have a red bud, a teeny bit smaller, that’s way too close to the house, that I’d like to move this weekend. Thanks!! 🌸🍄
Thank you for replying is the tree still alive after replacing it ! Take care
I sure hope so!
Great job and with the lack of sound as you were working we couldn't hear the swearing.
Beautiful Tree...why you move it?? lol Like the team work.
Because I change my mind all the time... I constantly move things around because my plants change lol That is truly a very pretty tree.
@@SoilandMargaritas Love your garden beautiful and inspiring.
What kind of tree did u say it is? Its really nice good job
It is a Redbud
My husband would have told me absolutely not. I'm so curious to see what your plans are that the tree had to be moved a few feet over to accomplish.
I just needed the space for a bench and a hedge of boxwoods, the tree was kinda in the middle of it. I hope I did not kill the tree.
Let me ask you. How long ago did you plant this tree on this spot? (the first spot). I have two redbud trees that I planted early this spring. (Spring 2020) but I already think that they need to be move a few feet here and there, practically I have the same issue you have . So I wanted to know how long has your tree been in this spot? The root ball of your tree looks pretty big to me. My trees have just one straight single trunk each and when we first plant them the root ball was less than half of your tree’s tooth ball. I just want to kind of determine how much work I (Well....my husband) has ahead of him. Your tree looks gorgeous.... I wish and hope it continues this way...have faith. I know what it is to love a tree. 🙏🏼🌿
Hi Bibi, I planted this tree in its original spot last year in the fall-ish, (2019) so it has been there for about a year now, you are right, we decided to grab as much of the rootball as possible to make it less stressful on the tree, that is why is so big but we could have gone half that size and still be ok. The single stem ones are probably easier to move ( not an expert thou) especially if yours has not seen a winter in that spot, I would start digging a bit bigger from what you(or he) is thinking, and go from there. Good luck!
What was that pipe in the ground.
my dadi would love to see how u work.. Love india 🇮🇳😍
Thank you for letting us know that your redbud didn't survive after replanting it, that is probably a risk of any tree that gets moved. I have a redbud twice that size and am willing to take the risk, I notice that the roots individually are not huge in diameter and redbuds are indigenous to this region. I wouldn't have known to backfill while digging and one person suggested to mark South on the tree and replant it with the same directional orientation.
I have one just that size I would like to transplant but have learned that a water line runs straight through the root ball so alas it is going to have to go. But for those who have hope I have learn from other videos that you can increase the chances more than 50% that your Redbud will survive if you transplant it in late winter. It loses list moisture through the leaves and it doesn't go through as much shock and it has time to develop new rootlets before it has to Leaf out and make flowers.
i am also going to do this with my trees cause i want to construct something over their thats why i decide to plant them to another place instead of cutting them
What's the name of that tree? I am looking to see what trees to plant in my back yard. How long have you had it?
Its a Redbud, I had it for a couple of years and it died the following year :/
Hi I also want to replant a tree how long has your tree been there for.(planted)
Before we moved it, the redbud had been there for about 2 years.
I love Redbud trees so much. How's your tree doing since you moved it?
Well, it is too early to tell, it looks like the flower buds are forming, but again.. .a bit early... I am in suspense.
@@SoilandMargaritas Please update us on your show how it does this year.
What if you did it in the fall?
Is there an update on how the tree is doing 😁
The tree did not make it, the 1 trunk that survived was infected by something... the center was rotting 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️ I was super sad about it for a bit but I’m over it now.
Hey! What happened now one year after you moved it? Was it successful?
It did not make it, I talked about it on a couple of videos recently. Now I have a honeylocust there.
Do you have any clue why it did not make it?
@@gablan1468 I don't know where they live but she said it was moved in "the middle of August". Should have waited a month or so.
@@kevlar1482 Exactly, from what I've always heard, moving trees should be done in Autumn :)
Here it is a year later, how did the tree do?
The tree died, I gave an update on one of my videos, I replaced it with a honeylocust one.
O no!!
Im sorry.
How did the tree do?
It died
Did the tree suffer any stress after the move?
The tree did not make it, It got sick with something that started as a brown center and it was dying :( SO sad about that.
@@SoilandMargaritas Hi! I just transplanted our redbud. It would help us greatly to know what you think most likely killed it, so we could prevent it happening to ours please & tyvm!
Did this plant survive after replanting
?
It didn’t!
@@SoilandMargaritas really?

I can't wait to see why you wanted to move the tree a few feet away aka future plans. Your husband is not only a funny guy, but also very smart by back-filling the hole with soil to escalate the tree. I don't understand why people would leave bad comments about how you handled the tree. The tree was fine, and I have no doubt it will survive.
Im hopeful it will survive, thank you for watching friend!
madam, how is your tree? I am going to use same method? can I cut the branches of the tree?
My tree does not seem to be doing well, it was a bad time to move it and apparently redbuds are picky as well.
Just a thought to make it easier; why not rent a ditch witch to save time, muscle aches, etc. The roots alone would be worth it + then to dig new hole for tree. Just 🤔
I transplanted apple tree from my uncle's yard it has transplant shock, it's wilted and turning brown idk what to do I don't want it to die
I'm sorry, mine also died...it got brown gooe inside the main trunks for some reason.
@@SoilandMargaritas thanks anyways for response
How to move a tree? Get your husband to do it!
Did you chose the right time of the year to transplant your tree?
I thought it best to transplant when dormant for least stress.
Definitely!
Your husband loves you.
Thank you! He is pretty amazing!
This is the very definition of high maintenance. The title of this show should be a day in the life with my high maintenance wife… That’s a whole day of fishing right there… I would’ve either hired someone to do it, or would have said no… Honey, do you remember that sycamore tree I planted last year, we’re going to need to move it 3 feet over here… If I’m going to do it, my wife is going to be nude while I’m doing it… That’s just me… Let’s hope she’s got something real special because this is going to require quite a few deep digs to make up for this one…
That's ok. When he goes fishing he can take me with him too.
Update?

It should be an easy job 😊says the one pointing their finger. I can assure you there is nothing easy about moving a tree . Women !!😂
For some people just to do simple breakfast is impossible. For some cooking bunch of stuff is easy. It depends on your mentality! We are all different !
