    I was just searching to see whether the price on the metabones is worth it since I dont know either names. Your review really helps me feel confident that I dont need to spend the extra on metabones when the Viltrox is doing virtually the same! Thanks for the great review man. I subbed because channels like yours deserve more exposure!

    When adapting older lenses (like non-micro 4/3 lenses) or lenses from other systems, a camera body with phase detection autofocus will give you much better results than one with just contrast autofocus.
    With phase detection, the camera can do some magic math to calculate almost exactly where the focus point should be without needing to move the optics back and forth. It can then tell the lens electronics exactly where it should position the optics to get there, which need to be moved only once.
    With contrast detection instead, the camera has to guess where the focus should be, move the optics to that position, check the contrast, move the optics again, check the contrast once more, and repeat this process multiple times until it finds the point of highest contrast (which is assumed to be the sharpest focus).
    This is fine if the lens' optics can move quickly, but if you are using large, clunky telephoto lenses, older lenses with slower electronics, and/or lenses from other systems via an adapter (which inevitably introduces latency and delays), the focusing process can become so slow that the camera struggles to keep up with moving subjects and changing light conditions.

    I got the metabones. It was over a year ago when I got it, so the viltrox wasn't out yet. Thought I think I would still go for the metabones, since I have the XL, and viltrox doesn't have a .64 version. Plus I just feel more confident in it! Great video Zach! Glad to see you on the YT! The 24mm canon lens is an old lens and there have been issues with it when adapted with a speedbooster. The newer lenses work fine, its just an issue with some older canon EF lenses.

    I never really considered the Metabones adapter since it's prohibitively expensive (~$1000CAD) so it's nice to see there are cheaper alternatives now. I ended up just grabbing some $20 Fotodiox adapters (no electronic contacts) for Nikon and OM manual focus lenses, and sold most of my Canon EF lenses. The adapted lenses were really more of a novelty when I first got into M4/3 but my latest camera, the Lumix G85, has focus peaking which makes manual focusing for still shots nearly as fast as the AF speeds I can get out of M4/3 cameras.

    • @ZachDriftwood

      At the time I got my metabones I didn’t know of any decent alternatives but I’d definitely say the viltrox is a worthy option.

    One HUGE downside to the viltrox is that the lens inside it can move with vibration after some time making it lose infinity focus. It is possible to readjust it, but it's a huge pain to do because the attached lens needs to come off each time you want to adjust the adapter optics. I'm considering spending the extra money on the metabones just so I don't have that problem

      Yeah I feel they probably have more issues with QC. I've never had issues with either but know both have some issues with some canon lenses. Wonder if they are unsupported lenses or just a faulty EF-M2, in either case totally understandable you'd not trust them.

    so that canon 24mm is actually a 48 mm on a MFT due to the x2 crop factor but if attached to the MB XL it would be 30mm focal length? Noob question but whats the point of different focal lengths? like whats the best sweet spot lenses for a gh5 since it has a x2 crop factor and .64x? Also what about lenses that are variable such aat 18-35, how would a XL speedboost affect those? thanks and great vid

    Soooo one thing that isn't really addressed in this video--the depth of both speedboosters. The EF mount side of the Metabones is further from the glass element than the Viltrox. This proved to be important to me when trying to mount (modified) EF-S glass on the Viltrox. On my Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8, the glass in my lens collides with the glass in the Viltrox Speedbooster at about 20mm. YIKES. On the Metabones, I can pull all the way back to 17mm. I'm still trying to decide whether keeping my beloved 17-55 is worth $420 more dollars. Woof.

    • @ZachDriftwood
      @ZachDriftwood  5 років тому

      Interesting! I'm not familiar with that issue but its certainly a concern. I no longer have the MB but never really noticed a difference in the distance of the glass from the front of the adapter. Do you still get proper infinity and MFD with that lens on both adapters? wonder if adjusting the glass element would help solve it.

    • @riparianstudios
      @riparianstudios 5 років тому

      @@ZachDriftwood I didn't really have infinity focus issues on the Viltrox, but I *did* have _back focus_ issues where I would be in focus pushed in, and then the focus would go really soft on the foreground object previously in focus when pulled back wide. I know that could've been dealt with by fiddling with the glass element in the adapter, but there definitely was no physical way to push the glass on the Viltrox back far enough not to have the issue with the glass colliding.
      I know that everybody loves the 18-35 Sigma, which won't have any trouble with the Viltrox because it's FF, but man... I hate focus by wire.

    Hello, i hope you still doing great this year.
    I have question.
    Lens: Canon EF 17-40 F4 L
    Camera: Canon 5D mk ii & Sony A7ii
    Adpater: Viltrox EF Nex IV
    If i use canon FF sensor lens on canon FF camera and i shot on 17mm fl, the image output will be exactly 17mm wide.
    When i use canon ff lens on sony ff camera body with the adapter & i do the same shooting on 17mm, would i get same result? I mean i get exactly 17mm wide image, or it will be different like wider or narrower image because there's something called mount conversion factor?
    I ask this because im new to this adapter, and i want my canon lens work exactly like on my canon ff body.

    I really appreciate the info. The value for money given by the viltrox is exciting & unbelievable, happy that i will be using all my EF Canon lenses on the Gh 5. The 2 times crop factor the Gh 5 has, what will be the focal length if i use an EF 16-35 mm in my Gh 5 with the adapter ? & does it mean that it will be narrower

    Are you or anyone else having problems with the Viltrox speedbooster or adapter with the GH5? I have the GH5s and the Viltrox EF-M2 and I can't turn on IBIS. It's greyed out and won't let me alter it. I've tried the newest firmware upgrade for Viltrox (3.5) and also downgrading it to 2.3. It was 3.2 when I first got it. Frustrating as hell. Doesn't matter if I'm using the Sigma 18-35 or my canon 50mm lens.

  • @creativesymon
    @creativesymon 5 років тому

    Very helpful. Another vid found (and showed) the Viltrox was much poorer at the edges. But this confirms it's more likely a QC thing and it's a bit of luck or bad luck what you get. The price is unignorable, though. And if they bring out a .64 to make the most of FF lenses, like the MB XL, then they'll clean up.

    • @ZachDriftwood
      @ZachDriftwood  5 років тому +1

      Yeah 100% agree QC must be poor, however i'm sure you could always send the unit back and hopefully get a good one.

    I have the combo Gh5 + Sigma 18- 35 + Viltrox EF-M2 and it is doing noises while autofocusing. Are those noises normal ? And also my sigma lens is moving a little bit, it seems to me that it is not attached correctly to the viltrox even if it should. Nice video btw, I love your content ^^

    •  5 років тому

      I got the same problem, how to fix it pleeeeease 😢

    • @ZachDriftwood
      @ZachDriftwood  5 років тому

      the lens will make some noise but it shouldn't be any different than the noises it makes on another camera. It may sound like more noise if you are using it in AF-C because it will constantly be trying to acquire focus so it will always be moving. as for the lens not feeling attached correctly. there is going to be some play because its the body, to an adapter to a lens, rather than one point of connection its 2. I don't have a fix for it. even my Canon lenses on my canon body have some play. this just seems greater because its the 2 connections.

  • @techviewer1

    I heard the .64x metabones adapter is solely made for the GH4 which has a greater crop factor. It could damage the GH5 sensor considering that IBIS moves the sensor around and the .64x adapter digs deeper into the camera. There also would be more vignetting as well.

    • @ZachDriftwood
      @ZachDriftwood  5 років тому

      technically the .64x is designed for use with FF lenses and the .71 is meant to cover APS-C. I, along with many others I know, Used the metabones XL with the gh5 for years without and issues like damaging the sensor. There is more vignetting for sure in an aps-c lens like the 18-35, but its usably at around 20mm and beyond.

    GREAT VIDEO - I have the GH5 and trying to decide between the Sigma 18-35 lens and the Canon 24mm f1.4 lens - Do you have any footage or videos that I can see with the GH5/Canon 24mm combo? Also do you have any thoughts between these two choices of lens??

    • @ZachDriftwood
      @ZachDriftwood  5 років тому

      Hey there! I don't have footage of either readily available but I have owned both lenses for many years! the 24mm is still my favourite canon lens (even with its faults) but I also use it extensively for photography. If i had to pick between the two I would pick the 24mm. But if you don't have a FF camera I would consider the 18-35 over it. It is more versatile certainly having a short zoom range. the 18-35 basically lived on my c100 for event shooting. IF you are using it on GH5 or aps-c cameras I would say stick with it because its cheaper and its a fantastic lens.
      Sorry for the extreme delay on responding to these. did you already make a decision?

    I think this is a really significant test of image quality. I have a two Zhongyis and a Viltrox and they all seem to give acceptable image quality including sharpness on APS-C bodies. If budget's a consideration then it's a no-brainer. But with some full-frame lenses you can get what to me is a noticeable loss of sharpness on a M43 body. If you want to use those lenses professionally that way it would be interesting to compare the .64 to the .71 and see how much of that sharpness you can recover. I'd rather use my good full-frames on all the formats I own and not have to buy high-end native glass for each. That's likely to cost a lot more than the Metabones. Just my $.02.

    don't get knockoffs (imo) because image sharpness is more important than speed. if not metabones (better sharpness), I'd recommend a dumb adapter or a native lens with larger (focal length / fnumber) working aperture or light gathering, just remember that you may have to stand farther back to frame the same, and that larger aperture means shallower depth of field bc slight forward/backward subject points going through fringes of the aperture don't meet up at the same point on image sensor like they would through center of the lens

      You don't really buy these adapters for sharpness, you buy them to 1) use your existing FF/aps-c glass with your m43 camera, 2) get closer to an aps-c, FF look in terms of FOV and DOF. 3) gain a stop of light to help bring down ISO because these cameras don't perform so well above 1600 ISO

    So when I look on amazaon.ca, I find that the 0.64 is 1350$ and not 650 like in your video, where did you find that price?? The Viltrox is still 250

    Important detail missing on the viltrox... There is lots of flaring when shooting a subject with a stronger backlight.

    ¿Viltrox EF-EOS M2 permite lentes aps-c? ¿O solamente los lentes full frame?

      thanks glad you liked it. No i didn't try other settings, but the AF-C is never gonna be great with contrast detect only. No matter how many updates, or tweaks, it'll just keep trying to acquire focus.adjusting back and forth.

    Hi. do you know if the Viltrox NF-M43X is the same quality and result as the EF. i know it doesn't do AF. i have a g7 / gh5 and nikon lenses.

      hey there, I can't speak to it because I have not used it. I would think, however, that the adapters probably use the same glass element and just have different physical designs in the adapter to have proper distances for the lenses to work properly.

    is that small stand on the lower adapter removable? How do you screw a camera with a Viltrox adapter and a lens on a tripod slate?

    Do they work with adapters for old lenses? Would /Konica-AR-Lens/AR->MFT/->speedbooster->/G9 work?

    Hello Zach. I noticed that my Viltrox at wide open aperture has pretty noticeable soft picture in comparison to the same lens without adapter (which is very sharp even at wide open).
    And this softening goes away if I close aperture by 1 stop. In your test it looks like Metabones also has this issue looking the same as Viltrox.
    Is that true, that both of those adapters make more soft "foggy" image at wide open apertures?
    Thanks for your comparison.

    • @ZachDriftwood
      @ZachDriftwood  5 років тому

      I definitely notice that at wide open apertures I got a purple colour cast and some sort of haziness. I would imagine that you would not be able to get the same sharpness with and without speedbooster because the lens was not designed to have any more glass in its way to the sensor. I typically don't use the lenses wide open because of those issues, only when its absolutely necessary in low light.

    Hey. You mention a crop factor on the XL would take a 85mm to 108mm - how is this worked out?

    • @callmelubo

      85mm * 2 (the mft crop factor) * 0.64 (the Metabones speed booster crop factor)

    Hello! Please tell me GH5S Sigma 18-35 Viltrox EF-M2 ii does not work autofocus at all !!!!! What am I to do? Firmware Viltrox EF-M2 ii version 3.3! What's the matter, why isn't he here? And the lens aperture does not work)))))) What to do?

    • @ZachDriftwood
      @ZachDriftwood  5 років тому

      I would make sure first that the lens works on another camera and that other lenses work on your gh5s and with the viltrox adapter then I would check viltroxs website for newer or older Firmware. there can be weird things where some lenses don't have support.
      Sorry for the delay, hope it helps!

    I really enjoy using my Viltrox EF-Eii focal reducer with some of my Canon lenses on my A6400 and A6500 APSC mirrorless cameras. Focus seems better and faster than using the lenses with the MC-11 or Metabones IV adapters and the image quality is quite decent. NOTE: the Viltrox EF-Eii focal reducer does not work equally as well with all my Canon lenses. Auto focus works smoothly with my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens and not very well at all with my 100mm f/2.8 (non-L) Macro lens.
    I paid right around $100 (U.S. Dollars) for a new Viltrox which is a fraction of the price of the Metabones.
