    Its actually scary that Alpha-Go agrees with Shusaku on the kosumi.

      It shows how brilliant Shusaku was, the fact that a man from the 1800s was able to find such an excellent move. Sadly it fell out of popularity due to Komi and was considered obsolete, then Alpha-Go was like "Nah, this teenager from the 1800s had it right from the start"
      Cause remember, Shusaku was a teenager when he pioneered Kosumi

    Dear Yeonwoo, thank you for this very good review. Shusaku did not invent the kosumi move, though, he was the one to use it the most systematically and the most efficiently in go history. According to John Power's book Invincible, The games of Shusaku, the kosumi move can be already found in a 1650s game between Honinbo Sanetsu and Honinbo Doetsu, and in a handful of 19th century games before Shusaku's time, for instance in a 1809 castle game between Inoue Shunsaku and Hayashi Tetsugen Monnyu, or in a 1813 game between Jowa and Gennan Inseki, etc... This shows how go knowledge is a collective work beyond personal genius, across space and time, and now across humans and AI. 😊

    I LOVE this game analysis @Go Pro Yeonwoo! Thank you for doing this. I just started learning Go and the video helps me understand more how other players think while they play.
    I really appreciate how clean you made the video. The layout is done so well where you can show us the go board, yourself talking, and pictures at the same time. The HnG video clips cut in is great for reference. Fantastic work!

    I liked Hikaru no go so much that after watching it i really wanted to become pro in go. In a year i became 1 danand even aplied to study in Korea and was approved, but sadly i didnt have money to fly there, so that dream never came true. I still really love go and watch games from time to time even though i cant bring myself to play anymore, which is a bit sad i guess.

    It’s truly nice to see these great games from the past explained with the aid of AI, even if those games were without komi: thank you!
    A player from the past that intrigued me for quite a while is Honinbo Satsugen. Nobody writes about him, although he was the strongest player of his time by far. After a period of “not taking the game seriously” (I don’t know how to describe this properly), Satsugen made sure go became at its top again, being quite strict: probably he wasn’t liked very much, but that doesn’t matter right now after some 250 years. His games with his main rival Shunseki feel quite funny, I couldn’t say whether they are good or bad. Maybe you, with the aid of AI, could shed some light on one of these very old games? Like, I found this game below. Satsugen was 34 years old, so he must have been stronger than the mentioned 1p.

    Yeonwoo, could you please explain why the komi actually exists? If it's say 6.5 points for white it feels really unfair because black needs to capture 7 more 'squares' to win, it would probably result in a more aggressive and less balanced game. Was the komi added to get this exact competitive type of games?

    • @ApontyArt
      @ApontyArt 3 роки тому +3

      AI doesn't particularly like it, 5% mistake. Yoda Norimoto also says it is not that amazing of a move (but still a move expected from a strong player). If an AI were to play it, it would have played it about 13 moves later in the game. What made it famous was how much it threw Shusaku's opponent off his rhythm.
