You are the luckiest man alive. You have the best job. I'd love a life of solitude.

I am so glad I found your channel and always enjoy your videos. Ever since I was a little girl (a very long time ago!) and first saw the Montauk Point lighthouse in eastern NY, USA, I thought it would be great to live there and take care of the place. In fact, I have a large photo print of that very lighthouse in my living room. To this day, I am always fascinated by lighthouses.

The more I see you do the more I think “I could do that” I’m really starting to think more and more seriously about that job.

It is not that the job is particularly hard or difficult, it is more the isolation that people have issue with. Sure, a lot of the job is active work, like this or cutting the grass but there is also no real rush so you get it done, when you get it done. I can't imagine myself doing anything else at this point in my life.

    Looking nice 😎
Can you reach all parts of the structures at the site for painting / maintenance or are there some areas where bigger tools are needed? 🤔

I read your comment before I watched the video .I wonder if the lighthouse keeper has to paint the roof or are contractors brought in?
and what about the grey parts of the tower does that need to be painted as well or is it weather proof?

    • @BCLighthouseKeeper
      @BCLighthouseKeeper  3 місяці тому

there are many areas that it is impossible to reach such as the water side of the AK house and much of the base of the PK house. The water side of the radio room is in accessable as is the water side of the engine room. For those jobs they bring in professionals who use scaffolding and proper fall arrest gear for the job. We are not supposed to climb ladders over 6 ft.

The roofs are all done in a metal material that have the red already painted on. There are some spare pieces around and they are pretty hard to even scratch. Not sure when they were replaced last, that is way before my time but the department that looks after the buildings takes inventory monthly if there are any concerns. The tower is exposed metal and not painted. It does get green after some time and so does need to be power washed every few years.

I would imagine there would be a lot of bird poo to be cleaned off as well

@@terenceseymour-tf8rptassie725 actually at Boat Bluff we don’t have a lot of birds around. Unlike many of the other stations that are covered in seagulls and seagull poop. Just kind of lucky that way here, don’t know why.

I was hoping to see some of the behind the scenes things like Puppies that just want to help paint and enduing up with red butts and necks, lol

Yeah, they are characters. They actually got most of their paint on them when I was painting the derrick bases and I didn't actually film any of that.

Yeah man, that definitely spruces things up. I was wondering if 2 coats would be applied, or if gets painted more than once per annum ?
And of course the dogs would find some wet paint.... never fails.
Nice soundtrack. Too bad the generators need to be drumming away, imagine what it could have been like doing the painting with nothing but the sound of waves nearby, and your roller laying the liquid on the thirsty surfaces.
Aside from what you receive via satellite and internet, are there any radio stations (AM or FM) up there? Don't imagine there'd be any TV signals around there.

I will put another coat on it this week likely, just to even out the paint color. You do get used to the generators as they are going pretty much 24/7 so like most noise they get blocked out after a while. When they stop it is really really quiet. Like you can hear the water fall across the channel quiet. It really is something else when it is completely silent. For the radio I believe their is a native channel that can be heard here. You hear it when you go to the community grocery store as they usually have it playing over the speakers there. I use Spotify for music and I do have Netflix and Prime if I want to watch something. I do happen to have a 4 terabyte drive around as well that is full of movies and TV shows that I have not watched yet, in case everything goes down. I also have a drive with about 2500 books on it that I have barely scratched the surface when it comes to reading. There is no shortage of things to do, that is for sure.

Another excellent display of blatant disregard for safe working practices.....
I can't believe that you document yourself online like this!
Who is your OHS rep for RPSS?
You really need to focus on wearing ALL appropriate PPE when documenting your work as a federal government employee!
