My dad was a Greyhound bus driver and i remember this sound and still today i know what an MCI 7 series is. Greyhound drivers back in the 70's and 80's were sharp dressed and took pride in their jobs. Thought it was the space shuttle when he pushed the button to fire it up!! Then pulling into the LA bus station downtown to pick up passengers was unbelievable!! I was then and still so proud of his career. He's still driving charter buses at 79 yrs old.
Love the sound, it brings me back to my childhood days when my mother took us on vacation. What I love the most was looking at everything from the highway. Thanks for posting...
I remember riding these buses in the mid-70's, mostly between Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. They were fast, but the seats were a little narrow and just a bit uncomfortable. The MC8's had wider seats, and were fast, also. But nothing beats the Scenicruisers! The best seat was at the top of the stairs. You could see everything from there!
These were the days when Greyhound was a much different company. The MC7 was the first Greyhound bus I rode back in 1974 when I went from St. Louis, MO to Cape Girardeau, MO. These were Greyhound's last buses they bought with a manual transmission.

Yes I remember going on a trip to kings domoingon in virginia and yes it was a mci v8 7 series bus and that bus was rolling down i 95 south this video and listening to the sound of that engine brought back a lot of Good memories.
Just like Down Under in Australia!!! Ansett Pioneer had 10 MC7's: 1973-1986 All 8V71 with 4sp Dana Transmissions. Driver Buslines in Melbourne have one preserved and in full running order, a GMC PD4107 and a Flxble Clipper 4V71, The 8V71 one of the engines ever built by GM. It had a real presence. Brings back fond memories this clip.
I cannot stop listening 2this it so reminds me of being in daycamp and we used Maplewood Equipment (lata on NJT) 4 our buses and I always sat in the back looking out that big window my friend Bryan and I was turned on by the white smoke our bus made and leaving the property of the campsite hitting the rode and getting that first shift in you couldnt wait for it and u knew that grinding sound was coming as well last day of camp was dreadful, I picture that now with this recording, Thx for posting

this was a fast bus...I recall a bus trip in the '70's I went on from D.C. to Atlantic City...the bus co. was A&B on Rhode Island ave n.e. The driver passed another bus in the Harbor Tunnel in Baltimore...this trip stands out in my memory because that driver pushed that bus to and fro...
I miss this sound, in the early 70s I used to go to camp with the fresh air fund,and the greyhound buses sounded exactly like this one this was 1970 thru 1974,,,,,,,I used to see these buses coming down 5 ave and go up madison ave in new york city in east harlem I was with a bunch of guys and we would see continental trailways and greyhound and Decamp and other bus charters shooting down 5th ave to get to port authority bus terminal,, those were the days , I wish they would bring them back
As a former driver I can only say that for the transmissions sake I pray you learned quickly how to correctly shift this bus.Brutality is what it would be called in a court of law.
Push the clutch in, put in 1st! Go thru first! When u r ready to shift to second, push the clutch in, move the stick into neutral, let go of the clutch while in neutral! Then push it right back in, and then move the stick into second! Then just repeat for the Last 2 gears!
+Kyle Northrop Only faster than +Trucker 2147 said it ... it should be like 1 - 2 on clutch pedal ... 1 push gets it OUT of first gear and allows the rpm's to fall when the pedal is in the UP position. and the SECOND push lets you get it in the next gear ... Anyway it takes lots of practice ... :o) I had almost 30 years of it, and I love it ...
@moderndisco Yes... the MC6 was produced only for 1969-70 (two prototype units were produced in 1967) with all 100 units being made exclusively for Greyhound. Originally, these were all specified with the Detroit Diesel 12V71N engine and the Spicer 8845 transmission, but only the 85 units that were allocated here in the USA received Detroit Diesel 8V92T engines and Allison HT740 transmissions (the remaining 15 in Canada retained their original powertrains to the end) after rehab circa 1975.
Traveled Grandma on these. Loved when the bus stopped so I I can't hear the gears switch and the motor sound on the MC7. I wanted to be Grey Hound Driver since 2nd grade. It wasn't until I was grown in 2001 til 2008 m the childhood dream came true. Never drove a MC 7 or other older models. My era was all automatic.Mc9 thru12.

I wish I had one of these buses. Next time most of my family wants to go to the cemetery in Whittier, Ca, I want to bring them in it so car owners won't have to drive in their cars.
Great sound of the engine, but it's a shame the guy couldn't do a better job of shifting. Also, the voices and comments in the background are really distracting and take away from the track.
@546TC I love that Slam dunk sound in the first shift in the beginning of the video, I'm the gear box is messed up cuz I seen another video and the drive was having trouble getting it in2 gear, There's another video "Seashore trolley and Bus Museum bus 22", where u get that grinding sound from a 8v71 powered Fishbowl, the first shift "priceless" and he gave tha little power rev inbetween, which i like better damn it's hard!!!!! but check it out!!!!
This is one road bus I enjoy riding & recording it. Today's buses are not the same. All of them sound like cars. I got to have a train or bus with noise.
I love the sound of the 8v71, but it a little small compaiered to the CAT 3408, Mack V8 and Cummins 903. It is funny, you take a MC-5, and strech to the the length of a MC-6, and you got a successs. I wouder what a 35 foot MC-6, be like.
I grew up on Greyhound and they taught the drivers when you shift rev the engine in between gears going up and down I'm a driver myself I prefer a Detroit 8v71 with a 4 speed manual transmission

Hey driver, don't forget to double clutch and remember, "Reverse" is: NEUTRAL then shift UP to First then shift DOWN to Second all the while holding a silver or red toggle switch that says Solenoid, reverse!
This is the model, I beleive, used in the second Pitch Perfect movie (in the scene with "True Grit" juvenile Hailee Steinfeld) that was being prepared as a bigger, better, tour bus.
Nope! They don't have that whitsle SOUND anymore....different design in the motor and build. They were buses in those days with MOTORS, not auto transmission. This driver is not reading his RPM in shifting correctly I think?/?????
@rustym88 Driver Buslines in Melbourne has a restored Ansett Pioneer MCI MC7. Mike Hollis in Sydney has an MC9 (6v92 & 5sp Fuller). Driver Buslines has an Ansair built Flxible Clipper and a PD 4107 (Jumbo) "Buffalo" Coach. A couple near Melbourne have an MC8 that is a motor home but the air-conditioning still on board and remains operational. I would love to visit your fleet one day. My goal is to buy an Aussie MC8 for full restoration. 1st coach I learnt to drive was an MC8!!

Prior to that Ansett Pioneer operated 35 PD4106's & 25 PD4107's all with 8v71 & 4spd Spicer manual transmissions. The philosophy was that manuals were much better on fuel. Locally built Dennings, Austral/Dominos, Ansair RFW's used 8v71 coupled with 5 or 7spd Fuller, or 6spd Spicer. Better gearing and they flew!!!
the only problem I have is that I dunno wat engine they were using for the '64-'67 model, this sounds close to it but i compare wit Z546 which is a 6 and very high pitched, I know they said GM/GMC introed the 8v71 in '68, which will leave me @ 6v71, but the Bus in the Movie Speed was a 8v71 and that was a '64-'67 model........hmmmmmmm?????? well if anyone knows different please post!!!!

Just for some clarification, the 5 speed Eatons did not appear in the MCIs until 1982.
What a beautiful looking coach. Some of these types were made in Belgium with an 8V71@290 hp with 60mm injectors.

the only problem I have is that I dunno wat engine they were using for the '64-'67 model, this sounds close to it but i compare wit Z546 which is a 6 and very high pitched, I know they said GM/GMC introed the 8v71 in '68, which will leave me @ 6v71, but the Bus in the Movie Speed was a 8v71 and that was a '64-'67 model........hmmmmmmm?????? well if anyone knows different please post!!!!
