The amount of effort Paul goes through for these videos must be in the level of tedious well beyond even a typical analytical person. Nicely done as usual.
The upside is he has a fantastic crew, so whilst the work might be tedious at times at least he is out and about with the boys. Any work can be made easy if you're with your pals.

I think the half size target gave people the illusion of far worse groups than reality. Besides every year when hunting season comes, I see droves of people bringing their scoped dear rifles out to sight them in. 8 out of 10 of them can’t shoot a 2 inch group with a scoped rifle off a rest.
Interesting factoid: given that the vast majority of deer in the US are killed at less than 75 yards I’d say even a five inch group is just fine since the vitals are an average sized deer are TWICE that size. Get my point??
That's what I found factory ammo will generally give you. Those 2 of the 10 you mentioned that are able to get tighter groups, probably either did a ton of testing to find a brand/type that will give them results, or are hand-loaders, or just got lucky in their ammo + rifle choice. Just too much projectile-jump with factory loads because of how deep they seat them...plus all of the other inconsistencies that come from hunting rounds. They'd need to use match-grade if choosing factory ammo, and obviously those aren't suited well for hunting. An exception, is ELD-M has been shown to perform quite well for terminal ballistics on some videos I've seen, and also shoots very consistently in some rifles.
@@DaveL9170, That might be the reason I shoot minute of deer or pig while hunting? I print my own 8 1/2 by 11 targets at the indoor range. people tell me how my shots are all over the target. Then I hold the page to my chest and ask, which one missed?
Neither rifle was designed to be a tack driver. They were designed to be combat effective rifles which they are. I appreciate you spending your valuable time trying to answer these questions for people but sometimes I don't think they understand that these are not sniper rifles. They are production rack rifles that you can use to install holes in center mass where there aren't supposed to be any holes and remove chunks of tissue. Both of these rifles do exactly what they are designed to do. Thank you for your patience, Paul. I really don't know how you do it.

to be fair it may "be" his rifle... because the Soviets were not exact. in "english measurements" actual off the factory line bore diameters of Soviet rifles range between 0.310-0.312 and the ammunition is just as variable. obviously the wider bore rifles do well with wider bore ammunition and less well with smaller diameter ammunition.... having said that, inconsistency is a problem with the cheap ammunition, regardless of rifle.
Is an AK a great sniper platform? No. Is the 7.62X39 a proven sniper round? No. Are they both an excellent choice for a battle rifle in the everyday world? As Paul would say, "You be the judge". Great work, sir.
Back in the dark ages, when I was in the Marine Corps, all of our shooting was done unsupported, other than by the ground, with iron sights. I am not anywhere near as good as Paul, but I managed to shoot expert and that included ranges well beyond what would be acceptable for home defense. This is is the type of accuracy test everyone should pay attention to. Including what seems to be a bit of rain. Factory accuracy tests are basically done under perfect, climate controlled conditions.

Most Americans are shooting average (WASR) style rifles with bargain ammo. Making this test absolutely valid. It would be interesting though to see this test run with a CZ bolt gun with decent optics and best avliable ammo.
Yeah. Guns like the Cz527 (now sadly discontinued), seem like they fill a great niche, as they can be a rather lightweight and handy sporter with some decent power without having the kick of a lightweight .30-06 Springfield rifle. Cheap ammo for plinking is a cool bonus, but you can handload for some very splendid groupings with a gun like that, really shutting up that idea that 7.62x39mm "just isn't very accurate"
I have a Howa Mini action in x39 with the Varmint barrel. I can get 1.1" average groups shooting S&B factory ammo and well under MOA average shooting cheap handloads with Reloder 7 powder, PPU brass and Hornady SST projectiles. It's a great pig rifle.

Great video Mr. Harrell! Anybody nit picking the results of this video or your previous video are just trolls. In both videos, all the shots, regardless of the ammo, show either a dead target or a severely wounded target that is going to have a very bad day. I think 99% of the people shooting cheap 7.62x39 ammo, prone unsupported at 100 yards would love to get the results that you got regardless of the ammo.
Damn! Paul just made Tula look pretty good! I was always the Wolf guy. I have a LOT of Tula too but can't believe the results on these two videos except it is from Paul who is pretty methodical about his process.
My issue with TulAmmo in 7.62x39 is I get light strikes from time to time. I've shot the same batch out of two rifles and had light strikes and then I can go hundreds without a hiccup. 🤷♂️ (SKS and VZ58).

Russian military minimum spec for accuracy out of any AK/SKS type rifle is a group no bigger than 15cm at 100 meters. Paul's group with the Tula ammo more than fit within that spec.

I love to hear the critical comments about Paul's accuracy at 100 yards, especially when you know in your heart that these critics are unable to shoot groups like that at 3 yards much less 100,.
It's his technique that I have an issue with. Claiming to do an ammo test where the biggest uncontrolled variable is rhe giy behind the trigger is really only testing the guy behind the trigger. One can extrapolate some conclusions from such a test but we could get much better data if he used a rest and multiple firearms. All these tests show us is how well Paul shoots with his WASR and ammo type A, B, C, or D. Is that useful information for the guy at home who owns some other ak variant? You be the Judge.

I don't feel someone clamping their performance accuracy gun in a rest and using hand picked ammo on a morning with no wind to be very useful. I don't need to know if the ammo or the gun or the shooter are quarter MOA capable. I do like to know if someone with ability can make use of it with all the varying factors. So to me, the judge, these tests are useful.

Thank you for pulling the bullets and checking the diameter. I had made the suggestion because I had experienced some "Tactical" 7.62x39 which used .308 bullet components.
As a hunter who has yet to find a deer or rabbit that kindly sat still long enough for me to set up a rest and sand bag, I find Paul's shooting methods acceptable representation of how I expect to use a hunting firearm. For the fixed position hunters and bench shooters, well be kind enough to ask Paul to do a video like that. Not piss and moan that he is only making part of his audience happy. I will happily sit through one of those too.
It's like with car reviews, does the average Camry buyer need to know the 1/4 mile time of their beigemobile? No, they need to know what kind of gas mileage it gets and if the radio is easy to use. I'm a car guy and even I don't want to know how quick a Camry is. Lab results are neat but real world numbers are better.
Go watch a PRS match. It's not uncommon, to see the ones that have been doing it a while, at the sound of a buzzer; move to position, drop sandbag, set up rifle, set up themselves, find the target ( anywhere from 2"-24" on average), close the bolt (safety rule of bolt must stay open before sight on target), then take a shot. All within 10 seconds.

I’ve fired wolf military classic 6.5 grendel. The last half brick, visually looked perfect. The cases blew out about 50% of the time and was all over the place. Another full case that looked identical had tighter groups and zero split cases. So hot only one location but really one batch to another can be vastly different.

I'm not sure what could be added for a pt3 but I would absolutely enjoy watching it. I'm building an AR in 7.62x39 @18"; perhaps 22" we'll see. Have read quite a few avenues of thought on that chambering in an AR platform and the possible accuracy increase given tolerance's. I'll know soon enough myself once the barrel is in hand, however, something like this would be a curious addition to your 7.62x39 ammo selection test rifles. Keep up the very fine work, sir.
There's no doubt that Paul is a wealth of firearms knowledge as well as a great shot. With that said, it seems to me that if a person is testing ammo specifically, it would be best to eliminate as many variables as possible. Even the best shooter will shoot better with a rest, good trigger, optic ect than without. Many comments say that a rest of even optic is unrealistic in the field but that's totally irrelevant even if true because Paul isn't testing the system as a whole, he's testing ammo. There's just no reason that i can think of to make the test more realistic at the expense of good accuracy data when the sole purpose of the test is that very data. On the other hand, Paul and his team put these videos out for free and have the right to make them in whatever seems best to them. Thank you Paul for making these videos.
I actually do get 🖕 MOA with my Ruger Mini 30 and my Barnes Triple Shock 123gr. reloads. I've just never been able to find "accurate" factory ammo for my hunting purposes. And there's just some ammo ( Wolf & Tula) I won't shoot through my Ruger. As always another informative video Paul. TY
I also reload for everything I own. Nothing like working up a very accurate load for every firearm I own. I love doing it & I shoot from a benchrest to test my loads in all my firearms, scope or no scope. That's the only way I can really tell for sure how accurate my different loads are by shooting from a solid bench, I'm no where near Paul's level of shooting especially with a handgun.
The Mini-30 is a cool rifle. For it being ammo picky, one thing I've seen people say over the years is to polish up the bolt-face to make sure there's no subtle raised 'lip' around the firing pin channel (left over from when it was drilled during manufacturing). For people who get light strikes with some kinds of ammo in their Mini-30, this seems to sometimes do the trick.
Ever get the feeling that if there's ever a Part 2 for a Paul Harrell project, the objective of the second one is to tear into someone's ass? Love your stuff, Mr. Harrell. With those groups, I see HIM hitting full silhouettes consistently out to 400-500m through damn iron sights. If anything, I wouldn't consider his marksmanship to be a fair assessment of the military standards for qualification, what an actual army would ask of both the rifle and shooter in combination. Its an ideal, certainly something to laud someone for, but not something to realistically expect from the bulk of the force without spending an inordinate amount of time and materials to train them to that standard. Its not simply a task, its a skill. Match Grade 7.62x39mm chassis are defeating the entire purpose of choosing that platform, like turning your jeep into a plush luxury ride -it is IRONY from a shooter's perspective. Loose tolerance functionality is the ultimate key value of the AK-47 series of rifles, antithetical to precision marksmanship. There's a good reason the Soviets chose to develop the AK-74 almost 50 years ago as THEIR evolution of the AK series. Arguing a point the primary customer already moved on from half a century ago. AK-12 (5.45x39mm), not AK-15 (7.62x39mm) is the dominant present-day AK. Prone unsupported is an honest test of marksmanship done by humans. Otherwise, just table-vice the gun and fire it via lanyard to see how exact the MOA from the barrel/ammo combo is in isolation. Yeah, you can mitigate the 100m distance with an optic, but when testing platforms, distance performance is an absolute category of its own with MOA being measured at that specific interval, and Paul is being honest when he describes changing or being challenged by a specific aimpoint. Plus, its a hassle to optic-equip every rifle in your inventory or from the loaners buddies give you to perform a given exercise -for the purpose of "Battle Rifle" it is not a realistic analog to what modern militaries still struggle to supply ALL their line soldiers with today. If you look at the AK-series in active military use today, the conscript doesn't get magnification, just as the US today still doesn't field ACOGs as the majority, instead opting with the cheaper AimPoint, to the grunt's chagrin; some love it, some will still qualify with iron sights instead, but the majority would appreciate some magnification on their mandated optic from as little as 1.3x to 3x/4x and beyond. On folding stocks... they're solid once locked in; Paul isn't firing automatic or even rapid fire. That's him deliberately measuring every shot. Just pointless pettiness from airsoft wannabes, range bunnies, or armchair snipers. What was supposed to be an ammunition exercise has devolved into fanboy/tankie/commieboo wank over which AK-Clone is superior, exactly the stupidity you'd expect from the cringe of the community. Even if Paul zeroes the rifle for every ammunition type he'll demonstrate, utilizes a magnified optic, and shoots supported, someone is going to find something to nitpick. You want pure empirical testing? Go to the ballistics tables where someone has cut down a barrel sequentially and recrowned it every time before they run their Velocity/Group vs Barrel Length exercises from a vice with a variety of listed ammunition. Its great data that I consider to be run rather scientifically, absolutely, but cannot be exactly applied to a given weapon because it isolates away all the other variables of a weapon and user that could affect final results.
I've literally seen the same model rifles with near consecutive serial numbers like different ammos. So why would AK rifles be different? I see similar mind sets in reloading forums. The question being what's the best load for caliber XXXX? I answer the one that shoots good.
Yes. But there are some loads that are more likely to be winners. 168 gr Sierra match king federal gold medal is the default answer for 308 for a reason. Lots of brands list it as the bench mark for warranty claims about accuracy.

The AK was designed to be a fighting rifle that will function in adverse conditions and Paul definitely filmed this video in such conditions. His dedication to the shooting sports is beyond what I would do. I wonder if some of the 'flyers' encountered a rain drop on their way to the target and how much that affected their trajectory. I would be happy with ANY of the results Paul achieved with any of the ammunition. Remember, he was shooting from the prone position on a rainy day, and it must have been quite uncomfortable laying on the wet ground.

I love my WASR. One time with it, I hit a vertical 1/4 inch steel rod at 166 yards twice in a row. Iron sights and my good shootin' glasses. The rod was a piece of a fireplace tool that had been holding up the side of an old computer with sticker targets on it. Then the computer side fell down, leaving the rod exposed. I was prone, gun on a "jacket rest" and the stars must have been perfectly aligned. Never questioned its accuracy after that. And oh, it was with Tula. But Paul, the best part of this video was the "ONE MINUTE OF ANGLE" statement. Always enjoy these, but even more so when you cover my guns and calibers, and 7.62x39mm is one of my favorites. Paul, great demonstration on how ammo will act in more than 1 rifle of the same caliber. As far as your "accuracy test"? IMO a person is testing their rig with how they intend to use it. This makes it a much more valid test than a test using other than intended shooting methodology. Log story short, my hunting rifle performs much better with my reloads than with factory loads. One of the biggest differences? My reloads are actually running about 300 fps slower than factory loads according to my chronograph. Yes, they work very well. I took 2 deer this year with it. 1 at about 70 yrds and the other at about 110 yds, drt's, looks to me to be effective ammo. The change from one rifle to another rifle makes me wonder what the velocities are from each rifle. Regardless, fire arms do show propensities for specific loads. The thing that is most irritating is that I didn't get a notification for Part 1 from the "Tube of Yous", to borrow a term. Thanks for all the great work and actually applying the Scientific Method.

Tula, Barnaul and Vymple quality control are all different kettles of fish of the three Barnaul and Vymple have the best. And of those two the Vymple is generally the most sought after. I get that standards for manufacturing are thing but in Russia it's very much not the same as it is in the states. Minor imperfections will vary greatly between those three, which I'm pretty sure you yourself said in your first video was definitely a factor.
yea I have a good bit of vymple stocked up I'd send paul a few boxes to test id love to actually if I knew how to get it to him...life long AK/SKS and 7.62x39 shooter and I say with absolute confidence that Vympel ammo is good shit
@@dbmail545 Barnaul is very good, I've always gotten a little better accuracy out of vympel but that's not to say that Barnaul isn't accurate, when it comes to steel case those 2 reign supreme...one thing vympel has going for it is the sealant, it's good ammo for storing for a rainy day...or ww3 lol
I have a VEPR and at 100 yards I get 2" groups off the bench with Winchester USA Ammunition 7.62x39mm 123 Grain using a 6 Power Fixed Scope. I could probably do better with better or reload ammo, but 2" groups id fine with me.
If you ever make the choice to hand load for the 7.62x39, even with basic Berrys bullets, mixed brass, basic large rifle primers, and whatever suitable primer you have on hand, you’d be amazed at how much your group size shrinks. I’d say it gets more than twice as good.
I learned a lot about ammo from this channel. Even after all those years this two parts were very interesting, because it emphasized what Paul showed us again and again: Knowledge about ammo and testing ammo is important. I never spent two thoughts about it. Now I do. Thanks Paul.

I think that this can be summed up as, if your gun and ammo combination is 1 MOA, but, you are a 5 MOA shooter and you work on your own accuracy, you will see increase in accuracy, if your gun and ammo combination is 5 MOA and you are a 1 MOA shooter, then the only way to increase accuracy is to find a better gun and ammo combination.

Ammo vs. Gun is amazingly variable. I have an AR that loathes Federal hollow point 5.56, and loves Wolf in the brown box, and is OK with black box Wolf. My AUG doesn't care, puts them all in tight groups, but the groups move by different boxes. I find 5.56 ammo to be much more ammo/firearm dependent that any other ammo I use. Buy and practice with the ammo that works best in your rifle, and know that if you buy and use a different ammo your results can be very different.
I too have a WASR 10 63 that has straight (un canted) sights and shoots good groups for AK standards. Let the haters hate. I'd match mine against any other AK variant. But thanks for the knowledge. I hadn't even read my boxes of wolf ammo to realize some were made in different places. I did notice that I have some 124gr and some 123gr and thought it was odd but probably negligible as far as point of impact. Maybe there's more to it than I thought
I’ve found that Wolf Military Classic 124 is a little more consistent than Wolf Classic 123 or TulaAmmo. I’ve also found that Barnaul is the most consistent steel ammo you can get. Some of the Wolf ammo is made by Tula so I’d expect that some Wolf and Tula brands would be consistent. That said, Barnaul HP ammo is the most consistent steel case ammo I’ve shot.
@@RARufus Just for what it's worth, for anyone who may be interested, I've also found Barnaul to be the best "cheap" steel cased ammo. I believe Rob at AKOU has also said so in the past.

For Wolf ammo, headstamps and the boxes give away that Performance is rebranded Klimovsk and Polyformance is rebranded Barnaul. At least, with boxes I've ordered recently. There's been some changing of sourcing for their ammo through the years.
I have a palmetto state ak variant and it shoots crappy ammo very good, decent ammo great, and good ammo fantastic! One thing I can say about my palmetto ak is that it has a fantastic trigger, and that might just be the reason it shoots so well!
I’ve got their 103 “Klone” and it shoots significantly better than some imports I’ve shot. I think barrel quality might be a factor (it’s CHF FN barrel). Rob Ski on AKOU has a video of him hitting silhouettes at 600 yards with one!
I bought a rpk from psa and got a stovepipe after 5 shots. Tula ammo with magpul mag. I’ve had cheap century aks that ran great. I lubed it up right out the box. You think it just needs to “break in” ?
Paul, don't overemphasize the ...weird comments, your wasr1063 is one of the better AKs overall I'd say, and I'm sure you know when a barrel is worn or not. Some people will nag, no matter what you do or do not. These tests are reasonable, fair as possible and praxis-oriented. And it's a lot of work, thank you for that, again. By the way, you know how they call a quarter pounder with cheese here in europe? Royale with cheese. I kid you not. ;) Plus: I like the toads commenting from the background.
Paul has more experience shooting than I have years alive so I take his opinions at face values and great importance. But Century arms has the worst history with AK's that I have seen. I do know AK "Purists" are going to come out of the wood work on this topic.
I'd love to see how much tighter he can get these AK groups using a very high quality import such as a WBP Fox or Jack. Those rifles are made with tender love and care and super straight. Would be Impressive with irons.
On the McDonald's comment. I would definitely agree they would taste the same. However , different employees and manager, can mean the difference between my order including pickles which I specifically asked to not be included and possibly spit in because I complained. But you're right still the same burger from the same plant. Just sometimes, the employee can make a huge difference. As always, a great video Paul.

Excellent video demonstration!! as a reloader and shooter myself, when I look at the print, I recognize the inconsistency that stems from the random powder charges. Half grain difference will give you a different POI. When I use Hornady SST 123gr rounds in my SKS, I get the most consistent groups at 100 yards (1.5" on a good day). I've opened a few rounds of Hornady and found the charges uniform enough for accuracy, within 4/10 of a grain.
From my experience, and from watching a lot of Robski, I can tell you that the heat of the barrel plays a role in accuracy. If you start with a cold rifle using one type of ammo, then switch to a different type of ammo after the barrel has been heating up, you are not getting a true comparison of the ammo. If you want a true comparison of different types of ammunition, you need to make sure the barrel is roughly the same temperature (± a margin of error) when you perform the tests. You may in fact be getting a true measure of the ammunition's accuracy, however, without measuring the barrel's temperature, there is no way to know for sure if it has played a role.
This is one of my go to calibers Paul. Although I run it through an AR platform. It would be interesting to see the accuracy differences, by running the AR platform in 7.62x39, against the AK? Thanks for the content sir!
@@scabcrawler632 I had a Saiga ak in 5.56 and it was about the same as x39, the ak is simply not built for precision accuracy, I actually sold it because I couldn't get better than 2" at 100 yards, to me that's unacceptable, I do have an ar15 in 7.62x39 and with certain ammo it is moa or better, so I hope that helps.
@@wymonwatson1309 Agreed. I pulled tighter groups on my Russian SKS, than I ever did on several AK's, I owned over the years. The mags are the Achilles heel on the AR platform, but C- Products got it right.
@@03redrubi I have had good luck with the c-products as well, I have a few asc 20's that feel like crap when you load them, but have been fully reliable, also the d&h have been 100% for me, plus they look kinda cool, but they are more expensive than any other brand. I even have a promag 30that is reliable...now lol it took a little work. Overall though, it seems they have worked out the kinks with the mags, and of the 4 ar15's I own my x39 is a favorite.

Ak's are plenty accurate, my buddy hardly ever misses the wood frame of my target stands. You know the ones holding the big steel plates hanging from chains.

I think the half size target gave people the illusion of far worse groups than reality. Besides every year when hunting season comes, I see droves of people bringing their scoped dear rifles out to sight them in. 8 out of 10 of them can’t shoot a 2 inch group with a scoped rifle off a rest.
Interesting factoid: given that the vast majority of deer in the US are killed at less than 75 yards I’d say even a five inch group is just fine since the vitals are an average sized deer are TWICE that size. Get my point??

That's what I found factory ammo will generally give you. Those 2 of the 10 you mentioned that are able to get tighter groups, probably either did a ton of testing to find a brand/type that will give them results, or are hand-loaders, or just got lucky in their ammo + rifle choice. Just too much projectile-jump with factory loads because of how deep they seat them...plus all of the other inconsistencies that come from hunting rounds. They'd need to use match-grade if choosing factory ammo, and obviously those aren't suited well for hunting. An exception, is ELD-M has been shown to perform quite well for terminal ballistics on some videos I've seen, and also shoots very consistently in some rifles.

Neither rifle was designed to be a tack driver. They were designed to be combat effective rifles which they are. I appreciate you spending your valuable time trying to answer these questions for people but sometimes I don't think they understand that these are not sniper rifles. They are production rack rifles that you can use to install holes in center mass where there aren't supposed to be any holes and remove chunks of tissue. Both of these rifles do exactly what they are designed to do. Thank you for your patience, Paul.

to be fair it may "be" his rifle... because the Soviets were not exact. in "english measurements" actual off the factory line bore diameters of Soviet rifles range between 0.310-0.312 and the ammunition is just as variable. obviously the wider bore rifles do well with wider bore ammunition and less well with smaller diameter ammunition.... having said that, inconsistency is a problem with the cheap ammunition, regardless of rifle.
I wish buy one rifle that can take all ammos but I don't know which AK is better it hard to choose one .
Is an AK a great sniper platform? No. Is the 7.62X39 a proven sniper round? No. Are they both an excellent choice for a battle rifle in the everyday world? As Paul would say, "You be the judge". Great work, sir.
Back in the dark ages, when I was in the Marine Corps, all of our shooting was done unsupported, other than by the ground, with iron sights. I am not anywhere near as good as Paul, but I managed to shoot expert and that included ranges well beyond what would be acceptable for home defense. This is is the type of accuracy test everyone should pay attention to. Including what seems to be a bit of rain. Factory accuracy tests are basically done under perfect, climate controlled conditions.

It would be interesting though to see this test run with a CZ bolt gun with decent optics and best avliable ammo.

Yeah. Guns like the Cz527 (now sadly discontinued), seem like they fill a great niche, as they can be a rather lightweight and handy sporter with some decent power without having the kick of a lightweight .30-06 Springfield rifle.
Cheap ammo for plinking is a cool bonus, but you can handload for some very splendid groupings with a gun like that, really shutting up that idea that 7.62x39mm "just isn't very accurate"
I have a Howa Mini action in x39 with the Varmint barrel. I can get 1.1" average groups shooting S&B factory ammo and well under MOA average shooting cheap handloads with Reloder 7 powder, PPU brass and Hornady SST projectiles. It's a great pig rifle.

Any Century built AK is trash. WASRs run, but they aren’t exceptionally accurate. A SAM7 would likely be far more accurate.

Great video Mr. Harrell! Anybody nit picking the results of this video or your previous video are just trolls. In both videos, all the shots, regardless of the ammo, show either a dead target or a severely wounded target that is going to have a very bad day. I think 99% of the people shooting cheap 7.62x39 ammo, prone unsupported at 100 yards would love to get the results that you got regardless of the ammo.

Damn! Paul just made Tula look pretty good! I was always the Wolf guy. I have a LOT of Tula too but can't believe the results on these two videos except it is from Paul who is pretty methodical about his process.
My issue with TulAmmo in 7.62x39 is I get light strikes from time to time. I've shot the same batch out of two rifles and had light strikes and then I can go hundreds without a hiccup. 🤷♂️ (SKS and VZ58).

People need to realize that 3-4 moa is completely acceptable in a AK style rifle. Smaller groups are just a bonus.
Russian military minimum spec for accuracy out of any AK/SKS type rifle is a group no bigger than 15cm at 100 meters.
Paul's group with the Tula ammo more than fit within that spec.

It's his technique that I have an issue with. Claiming to do an ammo test where the biggest uncontrolled variable is rhe giy behind the trigger is really only testing the guy behind the trigger. One can extrapolate some conclusions from such a test but we could get much better data if he used a rest and multiple firearms. All these tests show us is how well Paul shoots with his WASR and ammo type A, B, C, or D. Is that useful information for the guy at home who owns some other ak variant? You be the Judge.

I don't feel someone clamping their performance accuracy gun in a rest and using hand picked ammo on a morning with no wind to be very useful. I don't need to know if the ammo or the gun or the shooter are quarter MOA capable. I do like to know if someone with ability can make use of it with all the varying factors. So to me, the judge, these tests are useful.

Thank you for pulling the bullets and checking the diameter. I had made the suggestion because I had experienced some "Tactical" 7.62x39 which used .308 bullet components.
As a hunter who has yet to find a deer or rabbit that kindly sat still long enough for me to set up a rest and sand bag, I find Paul's shooting methods acceptable representation of how I expect to use a hunting firearm. For the fixed position hunters and bench shooters, well be kind enough to ask Paul to do a video like that. Not piss and moan that he is only making part of his audience happy. I will happily sit through one of those too.
It's like with car reviews, does the average Camry buyer need to know the 1/4 mile time of their beigemobile? No, they need to know what kind of gas mileage it gets and if the radio is easy to use. I'm a car guy and even I don't want to know how quick a Camry is.

It's not uncommon, to see the ones that have been doing it a while, at the sound of a buzzer; move to position, drop sandbag, set up rifle, set up themselves, find the target ( anywhere from 2"-24" on average), close the bolt (safety rule of bolt must stay open before sight on target), then take a shot.
All within 10 seconds.

I’ve fired wolf military classic 6.5 grendel. The last half brick, visually looked perfect. The cases blew out about 50% of the time and was all over the place.
Another full case that looked identical had tighter groups and zero split cases. So hot only one location but really one batch to another can be vastly different.

This channel, Its Host included of course, is one of the finest offerings on this entire site. Thank you Mr. Harrell this has been a fantastically informative and interesting series. I'm not sure what could be added for a pt3 but I would absolutely enjoy watching it. I'm building an AR in 7.62x39 @18"; perhaps 22" we'll see. Have read quite a few avenues of thought on that chambering in an AR platform and the possible accuracy increase given tolerance's. I'll know soon enough myself once the barrel is in hand, however, something like this would be a curious addition to your 7.62x39 ammo selection test rifles. Keep up the very fine work, sir.
There's no doubt that Paul is a wealth of firearms knowledge as well as a great shot. With that said, it seems to me that if a person is testing ammo specifically, it would be best to eliminate as many variables as possible. Even the best shooter will shoot better with a rest, good trigger, optic ect than without. Many comments say that a rest of even optic is unrealistic in the field but that's totally irrelevant even if true because Paul isn't testing the system as a whole, he's testing ammo. There's just no reason that i can think of to make the test more realistic at the expense of good accuracy data when the sole purpose of the test is that very data.
On the other hand, Paul and his team put these videos out for free and have the right to make them in whatever seems best to them. Thank you Paul for making these videos.

I actually do get 🖕 MOA with my Ruger Mini 30 and my Barnes Triple Shock 123gr. reloads. I've just never been able to find "accurate" factory ammo for my hunting purposes. And there's just some ammo ( Wolf & Tula) I won't shoot through my Ruger.

I also reload for everything I own. Nothing like working up a very accurate load for every firearm I own. I love doing it & I shoot from a benchrest to test my loads in all my firearms, scope or no scope. That's the only way I can really tell for sure how accurate my different loads are by shooting from a solid bench, I'm no where near Paul's level of shooting especially with a handgun.
My problem is not my rifles or ammo. It's clearly that I buy inaccurate targets.

The Mini-30 is a cool rifle. For it being ammo picky, one thing I've seen people say over the years is to polish up the bolt-face to make sure there's no subtle raised 'lip' around the firing pin channel (left over from when it was drilled during manufacturing). For people who get light strikes with some kinds of ammo in their Mini-30, this seems to sometimes do the trick.

Love your stuff, Mr. Harrell. With those groups, I see HIM hitting full silhouettes consistently out to 400-500m through damn iron sights. If anything, I wouldn't consider his marksmanship to be a fair assessment of the military standards for qualification, what an actual army would ask of both the rifle and shooter in combination. Its an ideal, certainly something to laud someone for, but not something to realistically expect from the bulk of the force without spending an inordinate amount of time and materials to train them to that standard. Its not simply a task, its a skill.
Match Grade 7.62x39mm chassis are defeating the entire purpose of choosing that platform, like turning your jeep into a plush luxury ride -it is IRONY from a shooter's perspective. Loose tolerance functionality is the ultimate key value of the AK-47 series of rifles, antithetical to precision marksmanship. There's a good reason the Soviets chose to develop the AK-74 almost 50 years ago as THEIR evolution of the AK series. Arguing a point the primary customer already moved on from half a century ago. AK-12 (5.45x39mm), not AK-15 (7.62x39mm) is the dominant present-day AK.
Prone unsupported is an honest test of marksmanship done by humans. Otherwise, just table-vice the gun and fire it via lanyard to see how exact the MOA from the barrel/ammo combo is in isolation. Yeah, you can mitigate the 100m distance with an optic, but when testing platforms, distance performance is an absolute category of its own with MOA being measured at that specific interval, and Paul is being honest when he describes changing or being challenged by a specific aimpoint.
Plus, its a hassle to optic-equip every rifle in your inventory or from the loaners buddies give you to perform a given exercise -for the purpose of "Battle Rifle" it is not a realistic analog to what modern militaries still struggle to supply ALL their line soldiers with today. If you look at the AK-series in active military use today, the conscript doesn't get magnification, just as the US today still doesn't field ACOGs as the majority, instead opting with the cheaper AimPoint, to the grunt's chagrin; some love it, some will still qualify with iron sights instead, but the majority would appreciate some magnification on their mandated optic from as little as 1.3x to 3x/4x and beyond.
On folding stocks... they're solid once locked in; Paul isn't firing automatic or even rapid fire. That's him deliberately measuring every shot. Just pointless pettiness from airsoft wannabes, range bunnies, or armchair snipers. What was supposed to be an ammunition exercise has devolved into fanboy/tankie/commieboo wank over which AK-Clone is superior, exactly the stupidity you'd expect from the cringe of the community.
Even if Paul zeroes the rifle for every ammunition type he'll demonstrate, utilizes a magnified optic, and shoots supported, someone is going to find something to nitpick.
You want pure empirical testing? Go to the ballistics tables where someone has cut down a barrel sequentially and recrowned it every time before they run their Velocity/Group vs Barrel Length exercises from a vice with a variety of listed ammunition. Its great data that I consider to be run rather scientifically, absolutely, but cannot be exactly applied to a given weapon because it isolates away all the other variables of a weapon and user that could affect final results.

I've literally seen the same model rifles with near consecutive serial numbers like different ammos. So why would AK rifles be different? I see similar mind sets in reloading forums. The question being what's the best load for caliber XXXX? I answer the one that shoots good.

Yes. But there are some loads that are more likely to be winners. 168 gr Sierra match king federal gold medal is the default answer for 308 for a reason. Lots of brands list it as the bench mark for warranty claims about accuracy.

The AK was designed to be a fighting rifle that will function in adverse conditions and Paul definitely filmed this video in such conditions. His dedication to the shooting sports is beyond what I would do. I wonder if some of the 'flyers' encountered a rain drop on their way to the target and how much that affected their trajectory. I would be happy with ANY of the results Paul achieved with any of the ammunition. Remember, he was shooting from the prone position on a rainy day, and it must have been quite uncomfortable laying on the wet ground.
Nah, a light rain? No way--these rifles will operate in Siberia [or North Pole/South Pole] provided of course, that the proper winter weight lubricant is used

I love my WASR. One time with it, I hit a vertical 1/4 inch steel rod at 166 yards twice in a row. Iron sights and my good shootin' glasses. The rod was a piece of a fireplace tool that had been holding up the side of an old computer with sticker targets on it. Then the computer side fell down, leaving the rod exposed. I was prone, gun on a "jacket rest" and the stars must have been perfectly aligned. Never questioned its accuracy after that. And oh, it was with Tula. But Paul, the best part of this video was the "ONE MINUTE OF ANGLE" statement. Always enjoy these, but even more so when you cover my guns and calibers, and 7.62x39mm is one of my favorites. Thank You!

Paul, great demonstration on how ammo will act in more than 1 rifle of the same caliber.
As far as your "accuracy test"? IMO a person is testing their rig with how they intend to use it. This makes it a much more valid test than a test using other than intended shooting methodology.
Log story short, my hunting rifle performs much better with my reloads than with factory loads. One of the biggest differences? My reloads are actually running about 300 fps slower than factory loads according to my chronograph. Yes, they work very well. I took 2 deer this year with it. 1 at about 70 yrds and the other at about 110 yds, drt's, looks to me to be effective ammo.
The change from one rifle to another rifle makes me wonder what the velocities are from each rifle. Regardless, fire arms do show propensities for specific loads.
The thing that is most irritating is that I didn't get a notification for Part 1 from the "Tube of Yous", to borrow a term.

Tula, Barnaul and Vymple quality control are all different kettles of fish of the three Barnaul and Vymple have the best. And of those two the Vymple is generally the most sought after. I get that standards for manufacturing are thing but in Russia it's very much not the same as it is in the states. Minor imperfections will vary greatly between those three, which I'm pretty sure you yourself said in your first video was definitely a factor.

Really? My experience with Vympel is that it is hot, but inconsistent. Barnaul seems to be pick of the litter.
@@dbmail545 Barnaul is very good, I've always gotten a little better accuracy out of vympel but that's not to say that Barnaul isn't accurate, when it comes to steel case those 2 reign supreme...one thing vympel has going for it is the sealant, it's good ammo for storing for a rainy day...or ww3 lol

Thanks for pointing out the half size silhouettes. It's easy to lose a sense of scale when it's only the targets on screen.
I have a VEPR and at 100 yards I get 2" groups off the bench with Winchester USA Ammunition 7.62x39mm 123 Grain using a 6 Power Fixed Scope. I could probably do better with better or reload ammo, but 2" groups id fine with me.
I would use it for deer, but I don’t hunt for animals!

If you ever make the choice to hand load for the 7.62x39, even with basic Berrys bullets, mixed brass, basic large rifle primers, and whatever suitable primer you have on hand, you’d be amazed at how much your group size shrinks. I’d say it gets more than twice as good.
I learned a lot about ammo from this channel. Even after all those years this two parts were very interesting, because it emphasized what Paul showed us again and again: Knowledge about ammo and testing ammo is important. I never spent two thoughts about it. Now I do. Thanks Paul.

I think that this can be summed up as, if your gun and ammo combination is 1 MOA, but, you are a 5 MOA shooter and you work on your own accuracy, you will see increase in accuracy, if your gun and ammo combination is 5 MOA and you are a 1 MOA shooter, then the only way to increase accuracy is to find a better gun and ammo combination.
That about sums it up!
Most guns are probably more accurate than most shooters, absolutely and myself included.

Ammo vs. Gun is amazingly variable. I have an AR that loathes Federal hollow point 5.56, and loves Wolf in the brown box, and is OK with black box Wolf. My AUG doesn't care, puts them all in tight groups, but the groups move by different boxes. I find 5.56 ammo to be much more ammo/firearm dependent that any other ammo I use.
Buy and practice with the ammo that works best in your rifle, and know that if you buy and use a different ammo your results can be very different.

I too have a WASR 10 63 that has straight (un canted) sights and shoots good groups for AK standards. Let the haters hate. I'd match mine against any other AK variant. But thanks for the knowledge. I hadn't even read my boxes of wolf ammo to realize some were made in different places. I did notice that I have some 124gr and some 123gr and thought it was odd but probably negligible as far as point of impact. Maybe there's more to it than I thought
I’ve found that Wolf Military Classic 124 is a little more consistent than Wolf Classic 123 or TulaAmmo. I’ve also found that Barnaul is the most consistent steel ammo you can get. Some of the Wolf ammo is made by Tula so I’d expect that some Wolf and Tula brands would be consistent. That said, Barnaul HP ammo is the most consistent steel case ammo I’ve shot.
@@RARufus Just for what it's worth, for anyone who may be interested, I've also found Barnaul to be the best "cheap" steel cased ammo. I believe Rob at AKOU has also said so in the past.

For Wolf ammo, headstamps and the boxes give away that Performance is rebranded Klimovsk and Polyformance is rebranded Barnaul. At least, with boxes I've ordered recently. There's been some changing of sourcing for their ammo through the years.
I've read Barnaul has better QC than other Russian brands.

I have a palmetto state ak variant and it shoots crappy ammo very good, decent ammo great, and good ammo fantastic! One thing I can say about my palmetto ak is that it has a fantastic trigger, and that might just be the reason it shoots so well!
I’ve got their 103 “Klone” and it shoots significantly better than some imports I’ve shot. I think barrel quality might be a factor (it’s CHF FN barrel). Rob Ski on AKOU has a video of him hitting silhouettes at 600 yards with one!

I bought a rpk from psa and got a stovepipe after 5 shots. Tula ammo with magpul mag. I’ve had cheap century aks that ran great. I lubed it up right out the box. You think it just needs to “break in” ?

Paul, don't overemphasize the ...weird comments, your wasr1063 is one of the better AKs overall I'd say, and I'm sure you know when a barrel is worn or not. Some people will nag, no matter what you do or do not. These tests are reasonable, fair as possible and praxis-oriented. And it's a lot of work, thank you for that, again. By the way, you know how they call a quarter pounder with cheese here in europe? Royale with cheese. I kid you not. ;) Plus: I like the toads commenting from the background.
Paul has more experience shooting than I have years alive so I take his opinions at face values and great importance. But Century arms has the worst history with AK's that I have seen. I do know AK "Purists" are going to come out of the wood work on this topic.
The pretty consistent advice in the gun rags is to try a variety of 22lr ammo to see what your firearm likes. It’s good advise for any caliber of gun!
I'd love to see how much tighter he can get these AK groups using a very high quality import such as a WBP Fox or Jack. Those rifles are made with tender love and care and super straight. Would be Impressive with irons.

On the McDonald's comment. I would definitely agree they would taste the same. However , different employees and manager, can mean the difference between my order including pickles which I specifically asked to not be included and possibly spit in because I complained. But you're right still the same burger from the same plant. Just sometimes, the employee can make a huge difference. As always, a great video Paul.

Excellent video demonstration!! as a reloader and shooter myself, when I look at the print, I recognize the inconsistency that stems from the random powder charges. Half grain difference will give you a different POI. When I use Hornady SST 123gr rounds in my SKS, I get the most consistent groups at 100 yards (1.5" on a good day). I've opened a few rounds of Hornady and found the charges uniform enough for accuracy, within 4/10 of a grain.
From my experience, and from watching a lot of Robski, I can tell you that the heat of the barrel plays a role in accuracy. If you start with a cold rifle using one type of ammo, then switch to a different type of ammo after the barrel has been heating up, you are not getting a true comparison of the ammo. If you want a true comparison of different types of ammunition, you need to make sure the barrel is roughly the same temperature (± a margin of error) when you perform the tests.
You may in fact be getting a true measure of the ammunition's accuracy, however, without measuring the barrel's temperature, there is no way to know for sure if it has played a role.
Paul has done a test regarding accuracy: cold barrel versus hot barrel. The results were very intriguing

@@scabcrawler632 I had a Saiga ak in 5.56 and it was about the same as x39, the ak is simply not built for precision accuracy, I actually sold it because I couldn't get better than 2" at 100 yards, to me that's unacceptable, I do have an ar15 in 7.62x39 and with certain ammo it is moa or better, so I hope that helps.

@@wymonwatson1309 Agreed. I pulled tighter groups on my Russian SKS, than I ever did on several AK's, I owned over the years. The mags are the Achilles heel on the AR platform, but C- Products got it right.
@@03redrubi I have had good luck with the c-products as well, I have a few asc 20's that feel like crap when you load them, but have been fully reliable, also the d&h have been 100% for me, plus they look kinda cool, but they are more expensive than any other brand. I even have a promag 30that is reliable...now lol it took a little work. Overall though, it seems they have worked out the kinks with the mags, and of the 4 ar15's I own my x39 is a favorite.
