It worked! Friday 8:30pm dropped phone in toilet drove 5 minutes to buy rice, put phone in rice in brown paper bag. Tried using for 30 minutes nothing! Found your video, vacuumed phone put in rice in a ziploc bag. Bought the damp rid next day and put the open rice bag w/phone in a larger bag of Damp rid pellets and sealed that bag. Followed your advice and did not touch until Sunday afternoon about 4:00. The phone lit up said it needed a charge and it has worked perfectly now for 3 weeks!!

I used your steps about 1.5 years ago for my iPhone 4s after I forgot I had it in my swim trunks and went into Lake Michigan for 10-15 minutes with the phone fully submerged.
Your steps are worth its weight in gold - I was able to get my phone working after 1 week (used to dry follow steps from the video) and I still use the phone today with no issues. This video saved me a headache and having to spend hundreds of dollars to replace the phone.
Even though the video told you not to try turn it on after the phone gets wet, I did anyway since it's a panic reaction and everything still ended up working in the end.
I have purchased a Lifeproof case since this happened to prevent this from happening in the future but this video was a life saver.

My Daughter's friend jumped in the pool with her iphone and was totally devastated. I found your video. Thank you so much for posting this, you saved her phone! I didn't do the damp rid, but I did grab the Dyson vacuum and started vacuuming! AMAZING! I could not believe it worked. The camera flash is on and won't turn off, but everything else works great. You've never seen a happier 14 year old.

Tx so much for you're advice. My I Phone 6s works!!! I watched a lot of other video's. I decided to follow you're advice. My I Phone was missing for a week. And found it in my driveway. What happened was we had a lot of snow and when the snow melted there was my phone.
I did NOT open my I Phone.
As you recommended I did the following things: vacuumed the end & top of my phone for 10 min. w/ a Dyson vacuum, filled a ziplock bag with rice, went to the hardware store and bought "Damp Rid" put it in another bag.
Got a larger zip lock bag, put the bag of rice with/ my I Phone 6s and put the Damp Rid. Very important- waited a week. And my phone works!!! Very happy!!
And saved $600 and did not have to buy a new I Phone 6s. Thank you soo very much you ROCK!!!!

YES!!!! This method WORKED! dropped my phone in the dog's water bowl for 4 seconds. I quickly dried it off and put it in rice and sealed container . Like the gentleman in the video , I was impatient too. Checked every couple of hours for a day. No dice. Put the phone in the rice bag and then the bag of damp rid and sealed it for roughly 4-5 DAYS. Yes, be patient, it takes TIME. I also recommend his advice of NOT trying to plug it in after the initial accidental dunking . Vacuum the ear and power ports, too. I vacuumed them after the first rice treatment.
After the 4-5 days in the rice/Damp Rid bags, It took about 5 minutes after I plugged it in for the phone to connect and start charging. I thought it was a goner!!
This gentleman knows what he's talking about. No taking apart the phone or soaking it in alcohol. Thank you, Sir!

This is a long overdue THANK YOU to the Amazing Mr. Josh!!! This worked incredibly well. My wife buys Damp Rid regularly for the basement closets and storage areas. It works really well pulling the moisture out of those areas. So I had faith that this would work. My wife left her phone on a glass table top through a wicked half-hour T-storm. We tried the rice bit for two days before I found this post. we followed these directions to a T, and after 24 hours the phone came back to life. But -- it was a little buggy, and the home button was not working. So..... we gave it another 24 hours and viola!!! It worked perfectly. And, it has continued to work perfectly for the next 18 months and counting. Thanks again Mr. Josh!! This solution came as aGREAT RELIEF to my wife and I.

My phone went into the toilet. I was on my way to work and just grabbed it and dried it off. It was working. I am old and didn't know I should shut it off. After a few hours it stopped working. I got home and watched videos on what to do. I followed Mr151Josh's advice because it was the simplest, as I said I'm old. I used the vacuum cleaner method and just kept holding on the places he described all of a sudden the apple came up on the screen! Then it went away... I kept holding the vacuum and the apple came up again! I just kept holding the vacuum to the phone and then the screen popped up to unlock the phone! Thanks so much!!!!

Semi- Lengthy description of how I saved my iPhone 6, but hey feel free to ask me questions:
So I Dropped my iphone 6in the pool for A MAX of 10 seconds. It went down, hit the 3ft floor. I quickly grabbed it, removed my case (Tech 21 non waterproof), and ran back to the apartment to the kitchen. Somehow I managed to text my bf, and accidentally open an app, but I turned it off quickly after and removed my SIM card and kept the port open.
I shook my phone in a downwards motion to get the water out through the speaker/charging port/audio port... And sideways, where the SIM port is.i took paper towel and rolled a small tip and lightly placed it in the ports. I also got a vacuum and put it up to the ports... Then I placed it in rice. Sat there for about 8 hours. I started searching for more solutions and found this video. By this point it's after midnight, I run to my closest 24hour Walmart, got a tub Damprid (it was all they had and I was frantic haha). I placed my phone in some old cotton fabric (piece of old shirt), put it back in the rice (ziplock), and placed the rice bag in a bigger bag of Damprid, leaving the rice bag open and the bigger bag (containing everything) sealed. I left my phone in there for about 19 hours....
About 28 hours after the water drop, I decided to test my phone. I WAS SO ECSTATIC TO SEE THAT IT FUNCTIONED COMPLETELY NORMALLY; camera, sound, mic, phone, touch and Touch ID, headphones, charging... As if nothing had happened. Only thing was there was this small darkish ring in the center of my screen, only noticeable on white backgrounds or something bright and plain. BUT after a couple of hours and putting my brightness to max... The ring also went away.
And now I'm typing away, 2 days after the incident on my UA-cam App. Time really matters in these situations.
Summary of the hectic shit I went through: phone shut off/sim removal, shaking, dabbing with paper towel, vacuuming ports, rice bag alone, rice bag + Damprid bag + Cotton/breathable material around phone), patience
    Good luck all!!!!

It was the last place I checked, the dishwasher had washed an rinsed by the time I found it I SCREAMED MFer! And ran to youtube in about 5 sec. And came on your vid, I put the Hoover on it for 7-10 mins and the phone turned on right away by itself, I stuck it in a bag of rice over night just to make sure it was completely dry.the phone works perfectly! Thanks for the SAVE! Hi! I was wondering if your home button worked? Mine is not working and im freaking out, yesterday I was at the pool with a friend, and my phone has a life proof case and we thought it was going to be fine underwater. We tried two times and we couldn't take the picture and realized the system was saying that the device something is not capable. Or something like that, And it was a little wet,i made sure to take it out of the case and try to dry it as best as i could and when i got home several minutes later i put it in rice until 9am today. The home button is not working and sometimes the phone acts up a little with siri or the volume thing popping up. I dont know what to do and Id like some help please. I already called apple and everything and asked questions...

Thank you Mr151josh. On Christmas eve my wife's IPhone 5 fell in the toilet, (nuf said, use your imagination). The one mistake I made which everyone advises against was initially check to see if it was working and the screen came on but looked like it was going to die and was unable to power it down. As much as I was in a rush as I was about to have a crowd of 20 people over for the holiday I took your advice and held the vacuum up to the ports for a full 10 minutes then stuffed it in a zip lock bag of rice, (I didn't have the other absorbent he talked about in the video). I to am very impatient and it took everything I had not to go and check it every 12 hours. I left it in there for a full 48 hours, put the sim card back in and like a miracle it worked. Thanks again.

Even if the water mark stays and causes more problems later, my two year contract is up at the first of 2014. I can get a 5s then, for a huge discount! This just wigged me out cause I just used one of my AppleCare incidentals two weeks ago. I have one left, but it costs $50 for restocking and refurbishing fees, each time. Glad I may not need to make a Genius Bar appointment on a Saturday! Thanks again, dude!

Second time (new iPhone) I shut it of immediately, put it in a bag of rice for 24 hours and used the vacuum cleaner afterwards (yes, wrong order, I know). And presto, it still works! Imho not turning on the device and putting it in a bag of rice for a long(!) period is the key to succes. BE PATIENT!

Worked!!!!! Left it in the rice and damp rid for 3 days just to be safe and it turned right on i had water under the screen, that was gone. My touch sensor wouldent work, it worked when i pulled it out! I also recommend before you put it in the rice to shake out some of the water and vacuum out the ports for a couple minutes as well and it should work. Also if you want more success purchase a screwdriver to take it apart and dry the insides out easier but when you do that dont put it back in the rice but instead leave it drying for like 12 hours or so. I knew someone who had one and he took it apart and without him doing that my phone may have never came back.

This WORKS... (so happy to see i am not out the cost of the insurance 'replacement' cost).
My iPhone 5s, yep, the one with the glass face that breaks if you look at it wrong, or drop it to the floor from a distance of 6 inches or more, was SAVED!!!
The iPhone 5s, with its broken glass face, and i am not just talking about a crack the upper left corner is missing, and this is nearly the size of a US dime hole in the glass. You can see the camera glass. (no small opening into the inside of the iPhone 5s)
I dove into the swimming pool, swam for at least 5 minutes with the phone in my pocket. I realized the phone was in my pocket, and then took it from my pocket, and handed it to a friend who was not in the pool. It was at least 30 minutes that the phone sat on the table next to the pool. The outside airtemp was approximaetly 75F.
I took the phone into the house, opened a bag of rice in the kitchen, and poured approximaetly 2 cups of rice into a cake baking pan. I carefully placed the phone so the big whole in the 'cheap' glass face was slightly lower than the rest of the phone (read, almost level, with a tiny tilt towards the open (broken) iPhone face.
I turned on the kitchen oven, to WARM setting (lowest setting), and then put the baking pan now holding the iPhone, buried in the 2 cups of dry rice, into the oven.
I left the iPhone 5s in the oven for approximaetly 16 hours.
I pulled the phone out of the oven, and let it cool in room, for 10 minutes. I could pick it up, and it was never so hot that i could not hold it in my hand.
I plugged into the charger, and saw the little apple, as the phone charged (GOOD SIGH).
To my GREAT amazement, i heard the iPhone 'chime' in less than 5 minutes, as it automatically turned on, and attached to cell network to download text messages.
    iPhone 5s with 32 GB RAM (400$)
Home Swimming Pool with actual water (25,000$)
Hiking shorts with handy pocket that you can put, and forget you have, your iPhone in (32$)
    Bag of rice (3$)
SAVING YOUR SELF FROM HAVING TO BUY A NEW iPhone because you are too forgetful to remember your new slim iPhone in your pocket in your hiking shorts.... (PRICELESS)
!!! SUCK IT, iPhone INSURANCE REPLACEMENT policy !!!

I repair iPhones for a living and I can say yes the rice is a quick fix but the liquid is not the problem, the only harm the liquid does is short the battery out. Yea simply replace the battery but the real problem is any sediment in the liquid gets left behind after drying it out and causes corrosion on the components and thats when the permeate damage takes place. When I do liquid damage recovery I remove the mother board and clean it with 99.9% alcohol to remove any sediment that got into the phone. Sure this guys phone works for now but give it a few months and there will be no coming back. Trust me I've done hundreds of liquid damage repairs not just one like this guy.

Never put you phone in charge after a water damage or it will blew your phone circuit due to water in it. Always remember water only damages the screen not circuit until forced to start by charging or trying to switch it on more then 3 or 4 times. If your phone water damaged don't panic just get rid of the water inside let it dry.

I dropped my phone in orange juice this morning...had heard about the rice thing so I immediately wiped it down and threw it in. 3 hours later, still not ok...found this and tried the vacuum trick. HAVE PATIENCE. After 10 mins, my button would finally close apps, but couldn't double tap and the phone thought it was docked. All seemed fine after 20+ mins, kept it up until over 30 mins. Working well, something wrong with speakers still and I'm worried about the OJ causing problems later. Thanks!

Rice is a bad idea......it can work but theres a bigger chance of it ruining it. Rice dries it out but it leaves the mineral components and starches from the rice that will corrode your connections inside...

    • @Mr151josh

Patrick John i understand that rice has disadvantages but iPhones get wet in places everywhere on the planet. Silica gel or alcohol or damp rid may not be accessible to some people watching in over 100 different countries last time I looked at my analytics. Rice however is usually an easy cheap and available method for those that don't have Home Depot or genius stores in their area.

Mr151josh MY STORY (w/question to follow): I dropped my iPhone in shallow water and quickly took the case off and dried it and my only issue was my speaker. It sounded kind of grate-y per say, so I looked up how to fix it. I put on this video and turned up the volume a lot and now my speaker seems to have blown out that bit of water that was still in there because now it's fixed. QUESTION: Should I still use a vacuum on it for 10 minutes or put it in rice for a bit just to be on the safe side?

  • @cairnserelli72

Rice is actually one of the WORST things you could use to dry out electronics....especially phones. The rice DOES dry the phone, but it also leaves all the minerals from the water caked all over the connections and motherboard. I have seen so many of these phones after the rice method and we usually have to remove IC chips and reball them on the MOBO because of how bad the minerals in water can damage said connections. It may work as a temporary fix, but somewhere down the line the phone will fail out of nowhere and you will be paying a pretty penny to have it fixed. not knocking you video...just a heads up as a fix it store owner. If your phone gets wet...take it to someone immediately who knows what they are doing with the guts of the phone. We have had iPhone 6's come in and had them fixed in less than 2 hours because the person brought it in same day or next day after their incident. This time of year (summer) there is a lot of pool water and toilet phones. These are the worst since the chlorine leaves a ton of residue after drying. Best chance to save it is get it in the hands of someone that can take it apart.....just try to avoid the rice!!

Hi MrJosh. my Iphone fell out of my pocket into a river. The iphone was in a ziploc bag and since the river is incredibly strong, water got in and when i found the bag it was basically a bag of water. The phone was completely wet and had lots of water in it, as I shook it out as much as possible. I have no turned it on, but it did take me ~2 hours to get home and i vacuumed for ~5-10 min. My vacuum is very strong. I then placed it in a ziploc bag of rice. It has been drying for 24 hours.

Will definitely let you know what happens. Didn't realize my iPod classic was in the washing machine for 5-7 minutes most likely. Ugh !! Right now have it in a bag with rice and then two bags surrounding it each with refill of damp rid. So instead of the one bag with the hanger on it I got the refill and filled up two small clear bags with that and surrounded on each side of the iPod bag with the rice. Used the vacuum for at least a half an hour like you said. Last thing the iPod said was to contact apple help and had a big red X with a circle surrounding it. I guess we'll see what happens. So annoyed I did this. Thanks for the help

Well, I did the opposite, I did I blew a bit of air with my mouth through the head jack and power connector and I got my sound back! After drying with rice and vacuum suction did anyone try changing the battery instead of using the same of water damaged battery,of course after it is all dried out.??? I think for some of you may have short the circuts trying to turn it on before it was dried out. I would take the battery out and change it also for best results. Don't use the same old water damaged battery they are cheap on Amazon. Dry the phone with what every your pleasure rice, vacuum, Alcohol dip then after fully dry. Change the battery then power on. If you power while wet or still saturated it short circuits and it will never be the same.
