Ya just can't say anything bad about Pigpen. He falls in the category of "Only the Good die young." I am totally impressed with his harp playing. I also hear Jerry playing The Other One riffs on this tune. Thank you for posting this.
i think it was pigpen that really got me into the dead to begin with just loved his way..he was the soul element that they could never recapture..thanks for the reminder..
I vaguely remember when they played this at Soldiers field,,, I was usually pretty tore up at these shows... Wow what I wouldn't give to go back for one more Saturday night!!!
@@Ck-zk3we I'll say it again, who do you think founded the band Jerry? It was a group effort but it is Bobby that approached Jerry and asked Jerry to play with him. Then the rest of the band formed
Indeed. THE best performance...Jerry's guitar was edgy, raspy and to the point. Gets me every time. That was the Greatful Dead imho. Raw and energetic...Pig just lettin' it all out...nothin left on the table by the end. I'm running out of adjectives...
The unfortunate passing of Pigpen created the biggest hole in the Dead. One wonders what sort of relationships he might have had with the talent the Dead had on the keyboards, and what direction would the Dead have taken with Pigpen still doing his thing on the mic.
I don't know but when Keith and Donna joined the band it all changed. No more long jams...no more blues...Jerry toned it down...AND we all had to listen to Donna's terrible voice for 7 years +. Both were Jerry's enablers..Shame on them
Chris thanks man,It has been a long time , nice to see your name up their with a new one! I saw PegPen 4 times he did a lot of his song's . First time i saw him he played Caution and blew me away,I was a deadhead after that night for life! Miss hearing from you brother, hope all is good with you. Brother sam
My older brother told me stories about Pig . Showman, blues man . Crowd would just focus on him and groove to his shit he was putting down ( my bro's words) RIP Pig. Long live the blues!
Gibson Les Paul guitar then a SG, then a Fender for a long time, Then the White T that he play,Untill the brown one he played till his passing away. Thanks Chris- Brother sam
There's a list of Garcia's guitars up. Can check them out. Just google Garcia's guitars in history or something like that. He used to play this amazing sg way back that is so gritty. Am a huge fan of his main Travis bean and his iconic guitar Wolf. Tiger is my favorite. I don't know much about guitars so I don't know what a semi hollow is. I wonder if it was that aluminum guitar he had for awhile. Anyway he played some real cool ones. I like how they could be rea mean and dirty but also rea clean and sweetly. That's his influence on them of course but it's amazing the scope of those guitars just as I listen to other guitars. Thanks. I don't know what am talking about. : )
Green Eagle Totally true. They lost their deep soul and blues connection. When he took over the vocals, the band completely shifted, too. Jerry was no longer in charge.
lsd was cool with good folk & music I think. Nowadays guess if you are gonna trip mushrooms or peyote Unless you are Phd and can brew the clean stuff LSD - 25 lol....! Thank God for all the good weed too brothers & sisters At least we still have that! Good job everyone thankyou Peace & aloha
Your usual great taste, Chase. You've managed to capture the Dead at the precise moment when they graduated from being a glorified high school band (full of mistakes, sloppy riffs that went nowhere and various other self-indulgences) into the professional force that they became. Congratulations!
in the beginning...Pigpen and Jerry were just amazing. Jerry's had a real nasty bite...what the hell happened to that iconic sound later?? That sound still gets me every time
didn't realize pig was yet another member of the "27 club" theres got 2 b something 2 this, all these great talents gone before their saturn return @ age 28...hummmm
Robert Hunter also had a deep affection for Janis. yiu'll have to research his as its been years and I don't remember he specifics but some musicians and crew were overdosed by an assassin backstage a show where big brother and the dead were to play.. It was way way too much- many tens of thousands of mics per person. Quite a few people were instantly paralyzed from performing. Janis flipped out because her drummer was a puddle and they were to play that night. She ran in backstage and started yelling at Hunter just as he was going down. He said it was unreal to see her that upset in his state. He didn't tell me but another person told me what he saw which was pretty intense. But he had immense feeling for her so it really hit him hard to hear her using rapid fire curse words on him and win her big clothes on and he just dropped. The security for the place got confused and threw him out the back door where he lay dying in the alley. The spirit muse of the Grateful Dead saved him and he wrote a song for her there- Stella Blue. I know all those guys had a lot of good feelin for Janis. She was the real deal cool as they come hippie sister.
I did not realize the dead stayed in their roots 67 68 period..I don't know of the deads many styles? That lead guitar sure sounds good though. Im looking for that glossy blue lookin video with pig pen ,68 era i think?

Trucking/Casey Jones before Pigpens death, never recorded anything that great since!! Pigpen reminds me of Brian Jones, Keith Moon, Terry Kath, Dune Allman
@facebookcnp52 What baffles me is how much Thunderbird and Southern Comfort can one drink to die of cirrhosis at 27? I can't believe he just drank himself to death at that age. He MUST have had a predisposition to liver problems.
yeah man yeah man Ronald pigpen Mckernan was the best the stereotype of the dead is it was straight psychedelic wrong this video shows they were only for a few tracks with tom in amoaxa they had so many great styles to put together blues folk bluegrass and towards the end with myland was funkier which in my opinon set the tone for all jam bands future the only shame was I only got to see welnick on the summer of 1995 tour but its great to see a group of deverse jam bands from different music
Pigpen was named that in part because he was roly poly,i.e. chubby. The fake guy wasn't and had puny arms, unlike Ron's, among other things. The real Ron McKernan died in 1969.
Crazy to think that an adult male singing a love song to a "little schoolgirl" was okay, was good. Did nobody think singing about a pedophile pretending to be a schoolboy was not quite fine? "I got to get you all alone." Yuk. Can't wait to read the howls of outrage from some of you all.
A True MASTER of the Blues Harmonica - for sure ! 🤠

This is one sick tune. Pigpen is all you need. Forever Grateful

The dead were so much more bluesy when pigpen was with them. I love this song and the way it's performed it's just cool
the blues w/a lysergic vibe - as only the Dead could do it when the Pig was there w/them !!!
this is an absolute BANGER
+Tyler Gregory cool clip convert and burn
Amazingly clean recording for that era -- and an excellent performance.
Thank you so much for posting it here.
That's one of the awesome things about the dead. They have many "styles". I think they have a song for everyone.

I love all of the comments, they teach us so much that we didn't know; THANKS, an avid listener, and fAN, too!

Immortal performance. The top of the tops. DIVINE!
@dannyhood66 - Jerry was playing a Gibson Les Paul guitar back then, beautiful sound...
very nice
Switched to an SG by 1969.
Fukn Pigpen - he and Jerry were made for each other; this is their best! Thanks for postn.

Ron pigpen was the love heart and soul I loved him dearly
He was one of kind!!!!
My big respect for Garcia work
Pig Pen wasn't a deviant. He didn't write this song- old blues song . Pig was the blues!
Pig definitely was a deviant. You don't get a nickname like that for nothing! One helluva deviant too! RIP

The Dead always kicked ass at The Carousel
At 6:35 Jerry starts playing some very Anthem of the Sun licks, and the drummers join right in!
That’s dirty, most bands just don’t do that stuff
I saw Grateful Dead when Pig Pen was still alive. It was in March 18, 1971 when Pig Pen flipped me the bird for waving too much! Jerk!
Your name sounds like cliche lmao
