Still the best CrossFit related podcast to date. Miss you guys
Louie's memory of numbers of all the people he coaches is remarkable. This is a coach that takes pride in knowing his athletes in order to better them. The people who have had the chance to train with him are very fortunate, and if you ever speak to them, the amount of respect they have for Louie speaks volumes.
lol I actually enjoyed this because Louie pretty much spent a whole hour schooling these guys & telling them their weaknesses & how to get stronger
We learn so much in situations where we're uncomfortable. Thank you guys for sitting with Louie; this episode represents awesome communication between the sports. Get a body-builder in there next time too! At the end of the day, dedication to whatever discipline is extremely impressive, and the negative comments on here just further reinforce the lack of collaboration in fitness. Education without intimidation is something cross-fit absolutely seems to be perfecting; how many people have these coaches inspired to start an exercise program? Maybe the reason America has no 'real' lifters is because those that approach an elite level can't manage to check their egos enough to teach effectively. Dear cross-fitters, practice learning to program with respect to an individuals goals; watch injury rates come down and absolute strength come up. Dear Power-lifters, practice coaching vs. boasting and try cracking a smile; watch your following explode. Again, awesome post. Thank you!
Louie is the man.....can't get enough
I learned more in an hour of listening to Louie than I did in a full year of exercise science classes at a college. Soooooooooo much information
louie simmons knows what the fuck hes talking about. Gotta love hearing him speak of his art. fucking awesome
I so wish Louie was my uncle...
This shit is like gold dust and Louie is a genius.
JImmy Brungis Dude you have the confidence of Donald trump yet the social skills of a homeless midget.
This is by far one of my favorite episodes.
Thank you
Louie Simmons is soooo advanced! So methodical, SO Intelligent! Damn I wish I would train with him for overall strength!
I'm not knocking Dan Green or saying he doesn't know anything but to say that a guy who has been around for decades and was elite as a raw lifter doesn't know anything is silly. There are multiple ways to train and different people are going to respond to different things. Conjugate training will be the way for some raw lifters and others it won't be optimal. To dismiss Louie as anything but a legend is selling him short.
Rest well Louie. Master of strength!
So much knowledge.
another episode to watch multiple times.
Came back to all the videos you've done with Louie, thanks for the great content. I hope you realise the chance you have with meeting all these great and brilliant people. Wish you guys all the best, keep up the good work
AWESOM STUFF! try get some more footage with this genius!
My favorite of all time! 8 years ago, I can't believe it! RIP to Barbell Buddha Chris Moore and The Godfather Of Strength Louie Simmons.
"Where's your scientific evidence?"... "WHERE'S YOUR 74 PEOPLE WHO CAN SQUAT 800?!?!?" lmfao
@@jozanstarks shit all this time we been watching Louie when we should have been watching Jared. O wait Jared what's your squat?
74 people who probably squat 500 raw* but know how to use a suit and not hit depth with 800 lbs*
@@Jmack7861 You think Dave hoff only squats 500 raw! You think he gains 700 from a suit? Lmao 😂
@@xbenxwilsonxhighlights7879 I think he probably squats 750 raw if he even hits depth. Nothing to write home about.
What a great conversation. Simmons is brilliant.
Simmons should have received the Nobel price in exercise science for his development of his training system
What a absolute genius in his field, I never fail to learn something when i watch this guy. Cant wait to educate my son with this wisdom when he gets older, knowledge that is the equivalent of super soldier serum.
absolutely amazing coaches ,all of you
Love this video already...def will listen to this multiple times
By far the best episode so far great job!
Wonderful video. Worth every minute. Thank you.
i could listen to Louie talk for hours, he knows so much
Keep doing these! Awesome chat!
This man is a freaking ARCHIVE! ITS AWESOME!
Legendary Louie!! Awesome guys!
Great content! Louis is a genius! Longest outro conversation ever though!
Thank you. Yes Bryce Lewis is a monster. Very impressive lifter. I don't mind differing in training methodologies. The only thing I don't like about this video is the lack of respect Louie showed for oly weightlifters as well as coaches. A guy like Glenn Pendlay is more than qualified to coach.
I think that equipped powerlifters, raw powerlifters, and olympic weightlifters can all learn from eachother. But the discussion needs to be open and respectful. Not dogmatic.
Louie makes a valid point, his lifters hold world records at multiple weights.
When was the last time the USA won a gold medal in Olympic Lifting?
The USA is getting killed by 3rd world countries in Olympic lifting.
You have the most resources available to you but have nothing to show for it.
The coaches need criticism.
But USA lacks the most important resource of all: athletes. Louie himself says that you need a large pool of athletes to train from a young age if you're going to succeed in weightlifting. Meanwhile all the good athletes play football, basketball, etc. because it pays much better.
I will watch this at least 3 times before work ends today.
What a great episode!! Keep it coming
I specifically returned to this podcast after listening to it at it's release. What a great record of powerful coaches, especially Lou.
But it is tough to follow Lou sometimes. Around the 9:00 mark, he says "A pyramid is only as tall as its base," and that crossfitters lack capacity. Usually when he says that, he's referring to powerlifters not having sufficient conditioning/gpp. But CrossFit is basically competitive gpp.
Then he seems to refer more to a general strength base as what crossfitters lack. But again, if there's anything CrossFit does, it's focus on general strength endurance.
Lou gave us a ton of insight and spurred a ton of great thinking. His results are undeniable. But I find his what's and how's far more compelling then his why's.
Louie is awesome, trying to watch every video on UA-cam of him and every interview he will say “can I say one thing?”. Still trying to fine one time where someone says no. Everywhere just shuts up when he says that. He is the American Strength god
The music for the training montage was perfect. Well done
He means gear as shirts.
Every single elite athlete is on the juice
Cant deny what he does works. He can talk "shit" all day long, but his athletes are incredible. Everyone successful has haters, be a pretty boring world if we didnt.
Thank you, i appreciate it!
That was awesome. Louie is a badass
Chris is on his game in this.
Beast. love this podcast the minute i heard how much louie talked about a good base
Great podcast!
Gear or not, Louie has brought a lot of things to light in the sport. He has a lot of knowledge about strength. That being said, you have to take all the of information out there, and find what works for you.
BEST EPISODE TO DATE.
best soundtrack EVER! \m/
this is quality content!!!
awesome cast gents
its good that you have strong idols, and that you are strong yourself, so you yourself can be the idol that your kid looks up to!
stay strong pal and congrats on being a soondad
Dude just knows too much...great episode. I am trying to multitask and listen to this at work, not working so well. I am missing alot. I am going to listen to this again when I get home when I can concentrate.
louie is the man
i love that fact they use Torche for their intro tunes
louie is a fucking genius
I keep looking but can't find out if mike actually increased his clean, anyone know?
"I have 74 people over 800 I have a 12 and a 12-05 19 over thousand"
When Louie talks numbers, my head starts to expand. I am so glad I can rewind.
Thanks Tyler. I appreciate the feedback.
Klokov is an excellent example of this. Been lifting since he was like 10
Louie Simmons speaks fast, hard to follow him but so much knowledge
Another reason the U.S. doesn't have much for weightlifters is that the people in this country with the greatest strength/speed/athletic potential don't compete in weightlifting, they play in the NFL. Weightlifting is not a main focus here - it is, unfortunately, a sport that gets, at best, secondary athletes. In the dominant countries, their lifters are picked and chosen from an early age to lift weights and their athletic lives revolve around that one focus.
Follow prilpepin's table
55-65% 3-6reps(18-30rep range)(24optimal)
70-75% 3-6reps(12-24rep range)(18optimal)
80-85% 2-4reps(10-20rep range)(15optimal)
90-95% 1-2reps(4-10rep range)(7optimal)
so this shows the reps at what percent, so warm up with 3-6reps up to 70-75%(preferably 3reps at that percent) and then move to 90% for a single and continue slow increase for singles until you hopefully break a pb, but remember once at 90%+ no less that 4 singles, max of 10 singles, 7 is optimal.
“How tall is a pyramid?”
Brilliant!!
Its almost hard to accept the amount of respect and attention that Louie gives ALL sports. Just a wealth of knowledge in terms of training and life in general
Tnx for sharing!
Any chances of any subs? (even partially) for non-English speakers?
this guy is no joke dawg.
You guys ever have transcriptions available of these?
you can full squat 15% more than you can box squat.
this is amazing to me, i recently did rack squats, aka anderson squats, for maxes after doing max full squats- AND rack bench 1rm after regular bench 1rm. i found the exact same difference: 15%.
Epic!!
This damn podcast could be made into its own book
You don't have to agree with everything he says but he is right regarding pure strength and that you cannot argue
So much fucking good info. love these podcast!
This episode has succeeded in making me feel as dumb as a jr. high kid during his first trip to the weight room. Another note: best fucking wrap up ever!
We share the same sentiments friend. I hope to see you at a meet some day.
Louis Simmons is a crazy genius
Awesome
The GOAT 🐐.
Dan Green is not a westside user. He just came out with an article called "West of westside" saying it is not optimal for raw lifters. Submaximal speed work was not invented by westside by any means. Bryce does however use it as you said.
I won't get into why I don't like it, that will likely take a full video for myself to explain my views. All I wanted to point out was how much of a joke it is for Louie to disrespect lifters/coaches who do things his athletes cannot.
24:30 high rep deadlifts for sprinters, good stuff like 30 secs before too.
33:10 How to properly do Plyometrics for Stretch Reflex & Speed Strength.
pick the weight you want to hit, warm up with triples then go 70% x 1, 80% x 1, 90% x 1, 95% x 1, 100% x 1
Louie is the Godfather much respect.
So is louie saying to do the eccentric portion of the exercise slow or fast for explosive power?
Louie, I've spent the past week reading everything I can about westside barbell training. I'm still unclear as to how many sets and reps to do on max effort days for the main lifts (let's say wide stance box squat at parallel and wide grip bench). I get the whole general design of the workouts including swapping out exercises ect, but I can't figure out how to design the volume of sets and reps on main lifts. Thanks a million !
Max effort, once you build to 90% do 3-7 lifts at the most and move on
What is the song in the intro?
Agreed!
The powers of proximity make that tabby cat the strongest cat on the Internet.
I assume at the beginning they are talking about Benedikt Magnusson's deadlift, but how does that count when due to the tires being used, part of the weight was still on the ground as he was coming up?
"people in American weightlifting think Olympic lifting is about speed and technique and not strength" -said no one ever...well...except Louie
Yeah Louie never cites who and where that was said. I've not heard someone be like it's all technique and speed and not strength.
Louie's method is a lot better than "outsiders" give it credit for. I've followed it for years and was a pretty decent raw powerlifter. I can still deadlift 3x my bodyweight, thou I'm mostly on BJJ now. Funny this is - I've always been pretty good at Crossfit too. And I'm far from being genetically gifted. My point is: Louie knows his stuff. Anyone can learn from him, if put aside one's jealousy. What makes Crossfit great is that we can use whatever works, from any source. So one of the essences of Crossfit is keepin' an open mind.
Strength genius
Remember if you want to be good at any sport you have to be strong. It doesn't mean you need to be huge, lots of people don't look big or strong but have lots of strength. By doing max efforts lifts and dynamic effort lifts you train all your strength and build you GPP, then you do SPP for your sport such as running plays for football, muay thai karate etc for MMA, different circuits for crossfit, but if you have no strength then you have no speed, when your strength goes down your speed slows.
Oh my god I'm understanding like every tenth sentence. Will have to rematch several times haha
Doug always asks the best questions
This video just opened up a world a info, confusion, and a fast talker with alot of percentages thrown out there. Good vid?
kendrick farris is world class weightlifter by all means, he just place third at the universiade and is en route to be a big threat in the 94 kg class
I wish he would stop saying that mathematically a pyramid is as tall as its base. There are all different kinds of polyhedrons, and they don't have to have congruent bases/heights.
Their heights and bases aren't congruent either....lol. The Great Pyramid, for example, originally had a height of 481 ft and a base of 756 ft.
Hell yeah, dude. "Protons electrons always cause explosions."
Tarpit Carnivore by the band Torche
🙏
Is there more footage of Mike working on cleans with bands and sitting on a chair?
