    I took a cruise to Japan in 1968 with my family. Not the same as this, but also nothing like today.

      I went on a year trip around south east Asia and ended up staying in Japan the longest. I found them very polite and nice people and the place was very pleasant , unlike most parts of the world I have visited.

      Most people mistaken for this video.. the video is simply about a cultural event in that day, hence they're wearing traditional clothing.. the cameraman were probably making film about cultural in Japan...and thus only shooting people wearing traditional clothing... it's in the 30s for fuck sake, people already had modern fashion with short pant, and t shirt, cars, airplane etc... u r dumb if u think japan still in traditional era idiot

      I remember Nara. My mom's from Japan. I went there when I was 13.
      I remember going into the big temple to see the big golden Diabutsu and all the deer wanted to rub their antlers against my pant leg....no one else, JUST ME.
      I was there for a month. Had a great time.

      Fun fact- the Netherlands were actually one of the first countries to have trade relations with Japan! Even when Japan was isolationist they let the Dutch trade in Nagasaki.

      Except its hell outside of these film. This is 1930s Japan. Internally their fascist, militarist, and racist. Politics is a mess and assassinations are rampant. Even their Shinto buddhism is militarised. Outside of Japan war and imperialism that makes even the western ones look tame in comparison.
      Postwar Japan is the better one.

      @@hoausdf レンズは上下左右を反転させます。上下は見る向きで変えられますが、左右を反転させるに透かしかありません。そして透かして見ることのできるフィルムは当時限られていたでしょう。もしかしたら、映像化する過程でそうなったかもしれませんが。

      @From the Soil exactly. If it wasnt for them feeling scorned and left out during the treaty of versailles they probably wouldn't have joined. Also if I remembered correctly the only reason why they even attacked pearl harbor in the first place was for oil. Since the Phillipines where the major source and it was under American rule, and they placed an embargo on Japan.

    I love those old walking roads with massive trees along them... they always remind me of those old Samurai movies and makes me feel melancholy, like when I see the little spirit houses along the roads or between some trees or rocks, it's just so magical and familiar. I've always longed for this life at the court in some early period of Japan, like some previous life I had even though I think that I must have hated it! All the pretend and strict rules. Urgh. But it would've been the small things like water streams, trees, birds, ancient temples, statues, poetry, kind spirits and love stories that make me long for it. Sometimes I think that people who adore anime once were Japanese in another lifetime. I do like some anime, but I am most touched by their passion of nature, food, family, honour and beauty.     My mom was born and raised in Osaka.
    She would've turned 7 when this film was shot.
    Her older sister was very pretty when she was young.
    She was "Miss Tokyo" when she was 21 (about 2 years after this footage was shot).
    I bet Mom would recognize every scene in this video and probably remembered the song heard at the beginning too.
    Wish I could've showed this to her before she passed on. I'm sure she would've enjoyed seeing it.

    To me, it's not the first song but the traditional song that starts at the sitting buddha statue that is absolutely mesmorizing. It draws me into the past like a time machine. Thanks Mr. Rogge for sharing these beautiful and important memories. The more people see them someone will be touched by them as I am and the memory will be passed on. I admire this work.

    Isn’t it so fascinating and almost unworldly to think that the people in these videos lived the same life we are living they laughed they cried they breathed they died. Though their existence has faded but their presence is still there. Life is so fascinating isn’t it. ❤️

    It's amazing that these kind of clips are preserved. I traveled to Miyjima Island (Itsikushima) last month. And seeing it in the light of 1932 is just mind boggling. But truth be told, the beauty of this island is actually surprisingly similar, even today.

    that's wonderful! I can't help thinking that there is a strong similarity between this music and bluegrass style american folk. In fact when I was in Japan I felt I could have been in the rocky mountains or the west coast.

    I was surprised that there is not much difference with the present Japanese. Of course clothes and hairstyles and the building are totally different. but people's expressions, the scenery the children play, and the atmosphere in the town are the same.
    I wasn’t born in that era, but I feel nostalgic and like cry... After the war, get through turbulent times , we came back there again. Thank you for sharing the film :) from japan
