I played a lot of 4E. There were some real drawbacks to it... fights took forever. pc's were always about min-maxing (which I love but it can turn off some). The heavy emphasis on fighting left players with few class features aiding out of combat activities such as exploration and social situations. Skills were used for that mainly. Wizards could do a few outside of combat spells (utility) but could only choose 1 spell every few levels out of a list of many. It was also quite hard to improvise when all your powers were fixed in description. But it was still fun.
There were some things in 4E that I think are better than 5E. I think it was a mistake to bring back saving throws. In 4E, the attacker always rolled the d20. They attacked AC, Fortitude (taken from the higher of Strength or Constitution), Reflex (higher of Dexterity or Intelligence), and Will (higher of Charisma or Wisdom). This allowed more flexibility in rolling characters and dexterity wasn't the god stat it is in 5E. Also allowed subclasses to be based on stats not used often in 5E like Intelligence. The int based Warlord Tactician was one of my favorite subclasses. It also would mean that we don't have to continually refer back to the books to see if a spell is an attack or a save. It would save time for us in combat. I also have players that always look at their saving throw list when I ask for an ability check. That gets annoying. But we could eliminate all saving throws from the game except for Death Saves.

Honestly, I think the best way to do Mass Shield of Faith is just to change the normal Shield of Faith spell say that you can target an extra creature for each level you upcast it. It'd still have the same casting time, range, duration, and still target three creatures at 4th level.

Mass shield of faith should buff up the ac that each of those 3 characters get when u upcast it. Maybe for every 2 levels above 4 (or make it a 3rd level spell and every 2 levels above 3) it adds an extra 1 ac so it would go up to a +4 or 5 depending on if u start it at 3 or 4 but I would say 3 sounds better. Cause honestly 3 characters is enough. But yea this is exactly what regular shield of faith should do. Honestly the way shield of faith is now I think it’s really stupid it requires concentration. Like there’s not really a reason to use it over bless it’s u wanna use a concentration spell.

@@NerdImmersion I think that's more about classes that would be able to cast it than about spell lvl. Battlemaster Fighters have a similar ability, as you said. It would be fine if the spell was available to only few classes - Druids and Warlocks, for example.
Oh, and don't forget about Haste. With it, Rogues can attack twice per round (Haste attack on their turn, prepared attack on another). So this spell actually doesn't add something new.

    • @anix712
      @anix712 4 роки тому +1

I don't think it actually is that powerful. Particularly as a 5th level spell.
Compare it to Steel Wind Strike, which is a 5th level spell. Steel Wind Strike is 6d10 to up to 5 targets. Mass Snake's Swiftness would only EVER reach that damage per target if you've got a high level rogue or paladin in the party (weapon + 10d6 sneak attack, or weapon + up to 6d8 smite), and that's only against one of the targets. Most of the hits from Mass Snake's Swiftness would be MUCH lower damage since it's only a single weapon hit per character (so d10s or 2d6s, etc.)
I think that, to be not completely overshadowed by Steel Wind Strike in all but very fringe cases, Mass Snake's Swiftness would have to be a much lower level, or give a considerable boost to the weapons attacks/damage that it allows.

    • @Benz74M
      @Benz74M 4 роки тому

Steel Wind Strike can also be a template for a Whirling Blade spell in terms of mechanics.
This is my current 2nd version level of Snake's Swiftness (1 action, range : 30 feet). DMG suggests 4d6 damage for 2nd level spell (+25% is spell doesn't allow save for 1/2 damage)... So depending on the chosen target, it can either be subpar or somewhat stronger if higher level target uses abilities such as Sneak Attack or Divine Smite.
"Choose a creature you can see within range. The creature can immediately use its reaction to make one weapon attack. When the target rolls damage for its weapon, it can reroll one die of damage and must use the new die. Abilities or effects that rely on a successful weapon attack (such as a rogue's Sneak Attack or a paladin's Divine Smite) can be used as normal, providing the prerequisites are met.
If the chosen creature is already affected by magic that grants it additional weapon attacks (such as the haste spell), this spell fails.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a 2nd level slot or higher, you can target an additional creature within range for every two slot levels above 1st."

    • @giorgitsiklauri840
      @giorgitsiklauri840 3 роки тому

@@antongrigoryev6381 It does because rogues can't do more than one sneak attack per turn, but if you use your reaction to attack on a different person's turn then you could use sneak attack again. This is a big part of the reason why most at will abilities which give you a bonus action weapon attack require you to spend an attack action to attack first, otherwise you could use a BA to attack once for sneak attack and use your action to hold your action until som1 else's turn and thus get two sneak attacks per round.

The main series of spells I want are Avoid Planar Effects and the subsequent higher level versions (Attune Form, a few others I think). As far as I know, there aren't any spells in 5E that deal with the vacuum that exists in some planes, much less the energy/alignment-based effects, so they'd have to rewrite the descriptions for the planes or create a spell that allows for more exploratory freedom there (I added the spell in my campaign and had the duration lengthen based on spell level). If the spells are concentration-based the planes would still be dangerous, but at least traversable.

I’m probably not the only one to mention this, but I don’t think you’d need snake’s swiftness and mass snake’s swiftness as separate spells. Instead, make Snake’s Swiftness a level 1 spell that targets one ally, and let it be upcast. Each additional spell level would affect an additional target. Then, as suggested, have it allow the targeted ally to use their reaction to make a weapon attack. You may even change “ally” to “creature” to allow it to self target.

Ventriloquism would be a nice cantrip, but cast as an action, and definitely for bards :D
Silverbeard would be better as a magic item that gives you a beard, 2+ ac and advantage for persuation vs dwarves.
Fire Seeds sounds nice, as mentioned like good berry, makes acorn or holly, acorn for throwing and holly as mines that can be placed.
you can have the AOE maybe 5ft so a damage for the one hit or the one who steps on the mine and dex save and damage if they fail to the ones in 5 ft of the one hit.
and you can tweek it down so that rangers can get it at level 5 then more seeds at higher level.
and maybe let the acorns be shot by a sling shot for greater range, so a 20/60 normal and 30/120 with a sling :)
Mass Shield of fait would be nice :) like you said :)
Snakes swiftness sounds interesting and sounds like it would work :)
Glitter con save to see if blinded and dex save to see if you can avoid if you are shown, or bumb it up to 3rd level.
Splinterbolt jep a new ranged spell for Druid.
Fire Wings. i would mix fly and fire shield and maybe give a ranged attack as an action. as 4th or 5th level
Whirling blade would be nice, maybe nurf it a bit so that we can get an early steel wind strike.
Arrowsplit would be nice for rangers, and upcasting it could be more arrows. maybe arrows as 1+ spellcasting modifier at level 3 additional arrows and +1 per upcast.

    10) Can be done with Minor Illusion
    9) While more interesting, is just Shield of Faith + situational out of combat benefit. (disguise self)
    8) Baller. Needs some mechanical tweaking but would be awesome.
    7) I like it.
    6) Eh I could give or take. It's forgoing doing something awesome to instead have someone else do something awesome. Reactions are a good thing to have handy, and blowing a spell slot to coerce your friends into expending theirs as opposed to say a fighter's maneuver or a wizard's feather fall might not be very fun.
    5) It's just slightly better faerie fire. Maybe as a higher level spell, but personally I like faerie fire the way it is.
    4) Another I could give or take. Seems to be giving druid/ranger a scorching ray equivalent just for the sake of doing so.
    3) Pretty cool. Probably not as a ranger spell though, as it feels like it's meant more for a full caster.
    2) As cool as it might be, you brought up the very problem that prevents this spell from being in 5e. Changing the damage from 1d6-3d6 based on the weapon you're using is an amount of imbalance that breaks this spell. If it would be in 5e, it'd probably be more like a one-time-use spiritual weapon. That and the fact that you roll individual attacks on each creature is a thing I know they specifically wanted to cut down on in 5e.
    1) Similar to the last one in scaling damage and individual attacks. Hail of thorns and conjure barrage seem functionally similar.

Hundreds of duplicates of the ammunition or weapon fall in a volley from above and then disappear. Each creature in a 40-foot-radius. 20-foot-high cylinder centered on that point must make a Dexterity saving throw. I feel like this list doesn't ask the fundamental question of, what does 5e need?
-Dimensional anchor (prevents one creature from teleporting), it is too hard to keep people from just plane shifting away.
-Spell immunity, (makes you immune to one spell), this is really nice for DM's to throw on an NPC that have studied the PCs for a while. Only problem is, that counterspell technically targets a person, so this would be used for stopping counterspell. Possibly put wording in there, that it has to be a harmful spell, and define that as dealing damage or causing a status effect.
-Anticipate teleportation, (this allowed you to delay people arriving by teleportation in the area around you by 1 round, and you would know exactly where they would arrive). I like there being a counter to teleportation ambushes.
-Avasculate, 5e needs a good high level single target damage spell, this could be it (no disintegrate does not fill that role, doesn't do nearly enough damage). Necromancy is a bonus so there is actually a good spell to use with the necromancy school 2nd level feature.
-Divine power. (This did a bunch of things that overall made clerics better fighters than fighters). This should be concentration, and should give the cleric extra attack, and give the cleric bonus radiant damage. The idea here is to create a tactical choice for your concentration, and not have it be automatically be spirit guardians every fight.
-Know opponent (gives you info about an opponent), should be a ranger spell, the ranger should be the guy who tells the rest of the party about the monsters, with this, they can be.
-Maw of chaos (9th level spell, creates area of continuous damage), a 9th level aoe that doesn't blow up the entire neighborhood. Should probably also be on the cleric list, they need more 9th level spells.
-Orb of [Elemental] (these did decent damage, and had secondary effects depending on the element used), We also need a good mid level single target damage spell.
-Greater visage of the deity, 9th level cleric buff. clerics really just needs more options for their 9th level slot.

Whirling blade looks like a mix between steel wind strike and catapult, great spell for mixed classes, I would keep it as a second level spell and give it a 30ft range, I think it should be balanced because it's easily hitting more than 1 enemy but less than 4, not giving it OP dmg.

~21:30 "because it is Piercing damage, and it's not necessarily *magic* Piercing damage" If put in it would be magical Piercing definitionally as it's Piercing created by a spell, would go through things with Immunity/Resistance to nonmagical BPS attacks just fine (other than things like Rakshasa which ignore any magical effects of below a certain level unless they want to let it through)

Okay. Lets make Sticks to Snakes into a spell then.
    Casting Time: 1 action.
    Duration: Instantaneous
Components: V, S, M(1-5 wooden sticks or stakes)
    Range: 30feet.
You throw 1-5 sticks on the ground & temporarily turn them into poisonous snakes. Roll initiative for the snakes & on your turn you can command the snakes to target creatures of your choice.
then some generic summoned creature stuff.
If a snake is reduced to 0 hp, it reverts to a stick. If the snake was reduced to 0hp due to fire damage, the stick catches fire & turns to ash at the end of your next turn.
(i didnt go look if this exists already, so if it does, my bad really lol)

Whirling Blade reminds me of Agnazar's Scorcher: about 3 dice of damage in a short line spell. It might do more damage due to magic weapons, but it's attack rolls instead of saving throws. This means that it has a chance of doing no damage if it misses, instead of half damage on save. Spells that use attack rolls tend to deal more potential damage than spells with saving throws for this reason. Also, line spells are very tricky to make effective, since it takes a lot of luck or effort to get more than 2 enemies with the spell.

one more old spell that needs to be in 5e. Permanency. many of the higher tier spells already have the caveat of casting them for a year to make them permanent, but this made a bunch of lower tier spells out of a specific list permanent instantly for the cost of XP. It should probably be just gold or other expensive components in 5e. but this spell is for PCs who have a home base, or better yet for bad guy mages with lots of time, resources, and an evil lair that needs protecting.

For that final spell, I would also argue that it could be worked into the arcane Archer subclass as a non spell. As for the mechanics, make it work like booming blade or green flame blade. A spell with an attack in it. I'd argue that dex to hit but wisdom to damage as well. And it would count as magical

I'd just make shield of faith scale with the level you cast it at to target another creature, if you think that casting it at 9th level to target 9 creatures is too powerful (which I don't but to each their own) then make it scale with every other spell level.

I think mass snake swiftness 5 is too much to also require reactions and all the other reductions. 5th sure if its every ally within 60 feet and no reaction. But if the base spell is 1st , and commanding strike is a ability, 5th with those prerequisites seems too expensive to me.

I miss the original Produce Flame spell. The way that it worked in 3.5 is that you produced flame just like in 5e but it remained 1d6 (up to 1d6+5) fire damage BUT you could do melee and ranged attacks (up to 120 feet) equal to the amount of attacks you had in a round. It lasted up to 10 minutes as I recall and was a 2nd level spell for druids. If 5e kept the melee touch aspect of the spell I would have been totally okay with the range nerfing that they did. As it stands I find Produce Flame as a cantrip to be underpowered in comparison to other ranged cantrips.

  • @JamesDean-nx2nq

I would change the name of the "Fire Seed's" spell and the explanation of it for a druid to take it. I would probably call it "Explosive growth" and I would explain it as the druid pumping a seed with so much life force it becomes unable to keep up and just explodes doing however much damage. I may keep "Fire Seed's" exactly the same but only as a ranger spell. I don't know if there is already a spell like what I described I have never played or been a "DM" before, just never seems like I have the time even when I know I do lol. But I think after the past year and a half of watching AJ Picket's "The Mighty Gluestick" and all the other "DND" content I may have to buy in im still only 24 so I have plenty of time to nerd out. XD XD XD XD XD
