Can you clarify in regards to the domain we use, does that domain need to be owned by us, and if so do any records need to be created on the domain side in order for this to function, furthermore will this DNS server be accessible outside of the local LAN?
If you want to run encrypted DNS, like DoH or DoT, you're gonna need your own domain with the appropriate records set (A or ALIAS) pointing to your DNS server. Otherwise Blocky can generate its own certificates, but most devices will reject these as they're not issued by any kind of certificate authority. You can still run a regular DNS server on port 53 though, which will have to be set in most devices' network settings by entering the DNS server's IP address in the DNS server options. With regards to being accessible outside the LAN, it should if you forward the ports. I run the server on a VPS in this video which lets me listen on any port, but on a home network be sure to forward the ports you need. I've listed them in the comfy.guide website linked in the description to this video.
It has support for encrypted DNS protocols (DNS over HTTPS and DNS over TLS) which are used by Google Chrome and Android respectively to set universal DNS servers.
