My closest friends love playing 2k20 and love buying cardpacks. The two of them collectively spent over $500 not including the full retail price they bought it for. They always beg me to play and I try my best to tell them what they’re doing is not only hurting themselves but the future of gaming, needless to say it didn’t work. 2k recently shut down the 2020 servers because obviously they want you to buy the new and “shiny” edition. So aaaaall their progress and money spent on card packs are now worth as much as a brick, and guess what? Now they bought 2k22 and are respending their money to get back to where they were. It’s absolutely infuriating to watch this happen to not only my friends but gamers in general. We gotta stop this shit guys.
that is why i don't play those type of games, was never a fan of 2k and never will be. i know so many friends and family that love 2k and they try to get me into it. People need to be more aware of these predatory games, they exploit people with addictive personalities. I think gambling is evil to be honest, and these games are nothing but virtual casinos.
People who say "I don't buy it/you don't have to buy it," need to understand if you not buying in-game content, it doesn't mean this kind of stuff is acceptable. Companies groom their audiences to keep spending money even after the purchase of the actual game. This is never a good thing.
On the other hand for poor people like me, this is a blessing, I cannot afford the upfront costs of spending $1000 for a console or gaming pc, and then another $100 for games while I can join the fun playing this game as f2p and just drops couple of bucks here and there to support the devs.
One of the things in Immortal are 2 type of crests. You use them before dungeon which you complete them after 5min. Most important crest is only gained trough real money. Comparing f2p run vs someone using 10 crests it's insane. You won't see any legendaries for maybe 3-4 runs and get maybe 1 but with crests you literally get a "golden shower". There is already almost 1h video talking about whole game ant it's monetization. Some dude streamer spend 10k and didn't get a single gem he wanted. Why people support this shit is beyond me. It's not like we have a shortage of games where someone could easily find fun.

I’m sick of microtransactions, I’m sick of lootboxes, I’m sick of paying more money just to make the game somewhat enjoyable. And they use “oh the game is free” as an excuse to do this. I would pay 60 dollars up front if it meant the rest of the game was free and there was content and no microtransactions. Hell, I’d maybe even pay more. This has gotten so out of hand.

I raised the issue of loot boxes back in the day of SW BF2 and consulted people I know within one of the major news papers in Belgium. We made an article about this and a few months later the Belgian politics picked up on this and got it banned! Still proud of this victory and the impact it even had on the stock of EA. Happy it even has consequences until this day. :D
For once Belgian law is "up-to-date" on something, thanks a lot for a job very well done! It is true that if enough people make enough noise about this, things can change like the lootboxes in SW BF2. No Lost Ark or Diablo Immoral in Belgium and the Netherlands! (Which is illegal according to EU law.) So if you live in the Netherlands/Belgium, you can play games like Lost Ark without risking getting banned, but not buy them. It's a weird loophole.
In a span of 15 years. The gaming industry has gone from shipping complete games with minimal DLC and zero to little in game micro transactions. To half completed games with day 1 patch fixes, year long DLC roadmaps, and in game micro transactions presented at every opportunity possible. What a time to be alive.

I will never truly understand the thought process for defending MTX. Sure some things are cool to buy and if you genuinely feel good about the purchase,great that is how consumerism works, but you cannot pretend that the way that things are marketed and developed today is normal. We lose the content from the game that we could have earned in game, things that could have added to the love and effort of developing the game. Instead, they slap on a price tag and paywall "content".
It has to be a good game in the early stages, because that's the hook that keeps players invested in playing the game, but at later stages, the devs had to make the experience unbearable to sell players the solution, which is to pay real money to upgrade gear to be able to enjoy the game again. Typical mobile game tactics which slowly seeps in to pc games as well! I really like how SkillUp titled it Diablo "Immoral"

I'm so called dad gamer now and don't have any other gaming platform than my phone and time is allways an issue. Asmongold has been streaming it and has had a $$ spent displayed above his cam. Now, to be fair, he has been critical of MTX etc for years and even now he keeps saying he's doing it to show people reasons to NOT play the game...since, by his logic, since he's complained about it for years to no effect, he reasons doing it this way will put off people from playing it when they see how much money it takes to play the game. I can see the logic and thinking behind it, but I don't know that I agree with it. I am sure that it will deter many from playing it...but there's always the likelihood that quite a significant number of his audience will also try it out because he's playing it and some will undoubtedly spend some money in the game...obviously not $100k...but a few thousand of his viewers dropping $20-50 or so will probably be very well received by Blizzard nonetheless. Whether the number of people prevented from playing the game because of him streaming it will outweigh those that do give it a shot and spend a little (or a lot) is anyone's guess...but, at the end of the day, for as big a streamer as he is in terms of audience...when we are talking of over 30 million pre-registered users (according to Blizzard) even whatever influence Asmongold has, be it positive or negative, won't really amount to a whole hill of beans anyway.

Either your commenters are just lazy or they haven't played the game. There is no paywall for leveling. You don't get more xp for spending money. You can get to lvl 60 as fast as someone that spends a few dollars or thousands of dollars. The campaign takes longer than many AAA games nowadays. It's a Diablo game... don't expect thrilling dialogues or meaningful quests. You'll hit a gear check in PvP, depending how spending willing your server population is. (Don't have to engage in PvP at all, it's optional) You'll hit a gear check at some point in challenge rifts because you simply lack power those that spend money have. Therefore your name will never be/ remain at the top of any leaderboard nor do you need to hope to be in the "best" (strongest = spend the most amount) clan on the server. I never had the time nor the will to top any leaderboard because... real life. So whether someone spends money to be on top or is simply the one spending most of his real life time with the support of an entire group of players... the result is the same.

I remember the first DLC I ever bought with my mummas card when I was a kid 🤣🤣🤣 The Halo 3 Heroic Map pack for like £7 I think? I believe that was pretty reasonable especially as Halo 3 was arguably a complete game. Look at the situation now especially for the younger generation its an absolute shambles
It was same here but the Halo 2 map pack disk. Did we need those maps? Absolutely not. It was a complete game and you could have the same amount of fun without it. But it was a nice and fairly priced addon for a complete game.

My closest friends love playing 2k20 and love buying cardpacks. The two of them collectively spent over $500 not including the full retail price they bought it for. They always beg me to play and I try my best to tell them what they’re doing is not only hurting themselves but the future of gaming, needless to say it didn’t work. 2k recently shut down the 2020 servers because obviously they want you to buy the new and “shiny” edition. So aaaaall their progress and money spent on card packs are now worth as much as a brick, and guess what? Now they bought 2k22 and are respending their money to get back to where they were. It’s absolutely infuriating to watch this happen to not only my friends but gamers in general. We gotta stop this shit guys.

People who say "I don't buy it/you don't have to buy it," need to understand if you not buying in-game content, it doesn't mean this kind of stuff is acceptable. Companies groom their audiences to keep spending money even after the purchase of the actual game. This is never a good thing.
On the other hand for poor people like me, this is a blessing, I cannot afford the upfront costs of spending $1000 for a console or gaming pc, and then another $100 for games while I can join the fun playing this game as f2p and just drops couple of bucks here and there to support the devs.
One of the things in Immortal are 2 type of crests. You use them before dungeon which you complete them after 5min. Most important crest is only gained trough real money. Comparing f2p run vs someone using 10 crests it's insane. You won't see any legendaries for maybe 3-4 runs and get maybe 1 but with crests you literally get a "golden shower". There is already almost 1h video talking about whole game ant it's monetization. Some dude streamer spend 10k and didn't get a single gem he wanted. Why people support this shit is beyond me. It's not like we have a shortage of games where someone could easily find fun.

So if you live in the Netherlands/Belgium, you can play games like Lost Ark without risking getting banned, but not buy them. It's a weird loophole.

I will never truly understand the thought process for defending MTX. Sure some things are cool to buy and if you genuinely feel good about the purchase,great that is how consumerism works, but you cannot pretend that the way that things are marketed and developed today is normal. We lose the content from the game that we could have earned in game, things that could have added to the love and effort of developing the game. Instead, they slap on a price tag and paywall "content".
It has to be a good game in the early stages, because that's the hook that keeps players invested in playing the game, but at later stages, the devs had to make the experience unbearable to sell players the solution, which is to pay real money to upgrade gear to be able to enjoy the game again. Typical mobile game tactics which slowly seeps in to pc games as well! I really like how SkillUp titled it Diablo "Immoral"

While I want Diablo to be a success, I also think that everyone involved with the monetisation should be taken to court and have the book thrown at them. There needs to be a legally binding international standard for in game purchases, outrageous pricing is one thing but this level is just immortally insane.

Asmongold has been streaming it and has had a $$ spent displayed above his cam. Now, to be fair, he has been critical of MTX etc for years and even now he keeps saying he's doing it to show people reasons to NOT play the game...since, by his logic, since he's complained about it for years to no effect, he reasons doing it this way will put off people from playing it when they see how much money it takes to play the game.
I can see the logic and thinking behind it, but I don't know that I agree with it. I am sure that it will deter many from playing it...but there's always the likelihood that quite a significant number of his audience will also try it out because he's playing it and some will undoubtedly spend some money in the game...obviously not $100k...but a few thousand of his viewers dropping $20-50 or so will probably be very well received by Blizzard nonetheless. Whether the number of people prevented from playing the game because of him streaming it will outweigh those that do give it a shot and spend a little (or a lot) is anyone's guess...but, at the end of the day, for as big a streamer as he is in terms of audience...when we are talking of over 30 million pre-registered users (according to Blizzard) even whatever influence Asmongold has, be it positive or negative, won't really amount to a whole hill of beans anyway.

There is no paywall for leveling. You don't get more xp for spending money. You can get to lvl 60 as fast as someone that spends a few dollars or thousands of dollars. The campaign takes longer than many AAA games nowadays. It's a Diablo game... don't expect thrilling dialogues or meaningful quests.
You'll hit a gear check in PvP, depending how spending willing your server population is. (Don't have to engage in PvP at all, it's optional)
You'll hit a gear check at some point in challenge rifts because you simply lack power those that spend money have.
Therefore your name will never be/ remain at the top of any leaderboard nor do you need to hope to be in the "best" (strongest = spend the most amount) clan on the server.
I never had the time nor the will to top any leaderboard because... real life. So whether someone spends money to be on top or is simply the one spending most of his real life time with the support of an entire group of players... the result is the same.

The Halo 3 Heroic Map pack for like £7 I think? I believe that was pretty reasonable especially as Halo 3 was arguably a complete game.

It was same here but the Halo 2 map pack disk. Did we need those maps? Absolutely not. It was a complete game and you could have the same amount of fun without it. But it was a nice and fairly priced addon for a complete game.
Those map packs were ironically bad for the game too as they segmented the player base and reduced the player pool for those that did have the maps.
Companies will continue to do these things as long as players continue to tolerate it and pay money into it.
